  • Ari Wasserman of the Athletic joins us to talk his recent article on the Mount Rushmore of College Football Coaches, which included Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, Dabo Swinney, and Woody Hayes.
Ari valiantly defends his selections and Paul only gives him a mild scolding for leaving Bear Bryant off his list.

I am both a sports fan and a history buff. And with both those things in mind, I have to say you cannot have a Mount Rushmore of college football head coaches without Bear Bryant. First off, Bear won 6 national titles as Alabama's head coach. Before that, many people claim the 1950 Kentucky Wildcats, which Bryant was the head coach of, should've been declared the national champion for the 1950 season. Bryant had only 1 losing season (1954 Texas A&M team), and all 4 teams he coached -- Maryland, Kentucky, Texas A&M AND Alabama -- were winners on Bear Bryant's watch. Bear Bryant = Greatness.

Say what you will about Bear Bryant. I know he was from the time of unlimited scholarships. The one thing he had to deal with was racial segregation in the deep south. He coached at a time where all his players were white. He also recognized that times were changing and for his program to be competitive he needed black players. How the hell do you convince a whole state to allow black players when they fight so hard to keep blacks from even enrolling. Paul Bear Bryant knew it was time to integrate his football team before the rest of the state. I know he was not looking for anything but to win. But to keep winning he knew this needed to happen. Somehow he slowly integrated his team and continued to "just win." Bryant has championships in both era's All white and fully integrated in the State of Alabama. For that I say to keep him off Mount Rushmore is a crime. In my mind the "Bear" is the greatest.
