In my mind whenever you don’t see someone reappear whenever, they’ve been magically punished, the either one of a few options happened. One is that they were let go off camera, two is something bad happened or three-which is a rarer option, they were left in the past. And what I mean by the third option is that the situation was either something that was out of the character’s control or had already happened. You could argue in the episode that even though the books were found and helped to end the misery, that at the end of the day no one knew how to bring the girls who had been punished back. There has been some really great examples of this in other horror media. A favorite example of mine would be in The Witches when the grandmother is telling her grandson about a childhood friend of hers, that was imprisoned in a painting when they were small children. It just makes you wonder about stories that have that type of mystery to them.
