The Bushcraft community has turned these simple mess kits into an Icon of the Military Mess Kit era. I now can see why. Their versatility in how they can be used and what you can cook in them is second to non. It's not just a pot, it's a piece of History!

My Swedish mess kit is stainless steel, made by "Gense", Around 20 years ago "Sportsman's Guide" ( South St. Paul MN) was selling 2 Swedish stainless steel mess kits for around $22, mess kit only, not complete 'system'. I bought the 'wind screen', bottle, and Trangia 'military' alcohol burner separate. My mess kit has no Crowns (3 Crowns) stamped on it, only "Gense".The alcohol burner has cracks in the lid. I also have the 'civilian' smaller alcohol burner. Snuffer is a great idea. Thanks for the video. edit: I hook the bail into one of the side rings, works fine too, keeps bail well above, and easy to pour too.The hook wouldn't go into center 'band', and I didn't want to 'modify' the hook to fit the "style'/othodox method. which people howl and criticise about, "you're not doing it right". The hook may have opened up a bit during its intial service, became a larger radius, I found no reason to "force" the hook to become "kosher". I made a lid from copper, fits ok on kit, but won't work for oven, ( will fall off, not pressure fit). I now have a small "Lip Roller" for sheet metal and will try to make another lid with better fit. thanks for link to Wildcrafts. Thanks again for video.
My friend I do know what you mean about "your not doing it right" LOL I say what works works. For me having a lid helps, I like it. Copper must look nice. The lids that I have were made from a gentleman in the UK, he did a great job. But, if you have the tools needed to fabrica your own, that's even better. I too have a lid that has fracture cracks in it. Im empted to braze weld it to see what happens. Can't get any worse. LOL Thank for dropping by. Have yourself a good rest of the week.
@@danielcharbonneau222 Thanks for reply, in deep cold alcohol burner doesn't work the best, I just hang kit over fire, can adjust heat by raising/lowering. In which Province do you live,if you don't mind? My son earned his Baccalaureate from U of Manitoba, "Go Bisons".

I really enjoyed your super detailed and easy-to-comprehend presentation. Thank you so much. No wonder this kit is loved by bushcrafters all over the world. Regarding the inverted windshield setup, I wondered if the fire generated by wood would melt windshield made of aluminium. I appreciate your idea about this. Anyway this setup would work for a one-time emergency use in case no dedicated wood stoves like Firebox are available.

Thanks. Yes this mess kit is on the rise as being the most sot-after world wide. I've see where the windshield was used as a twig stove. The color went from a black to almost a brownish color with very little warping. The person in the video stated that he used it in that manner do to the fire restriction that was in-affect in his area at the time. But, he also stated that he kept the fire small, just hot enough for boiling water for coffee and his MREs. Sorry it took so long to reply, I tried to find that video to attach to this reply, but I was not able to find it. That is an extensive collection of Swedish mess kits…I found an original at sportsman’s guide for $22. I’ve been wanting one for a while, they’re just so hard to find anymore. Thanks for sharing your video. Have a blessed day brother.
Thanks Nikki. The stainless steel ones are now hard to find and can be very expensive running at about $160 to $200 US on ebay. Crazy stuff.

This set is designed for very low temperatures, the cup is a cultural shape which would be carved from wood, so you didn’t stick to a metal pot when it is degrees of frost.
If you pack carefully, you can pack kfs, burner, fuel bottle and cup in the pot and fit the lid... you have to work it out and you might have to relearn it if not careful in remembering what you just did. 😅

Best video I think I’ve ever seen on history of the M40 and M44!Before the intro of the shield and stove, how did their military heat their food? A pressurized stove maybe? Or did they hang it over an actual fire?
Thank you very much for your comment. From the information that I've seen it was used in a camp kitchen setup, everyone would stand in line and the cook helpers would spoon the slop into the mess kits. Not to many fires were made to heat up their foods, they didn't want to give themselves away to the enemy. The troops were at times given rations, tea and coffee to take with them, and yes depending on the circumstances a very small fire was used. In 1959, 1960 when the windshield and burner was introduced and given to the soldiers, that must of made things a hole lot better for their morale, but at the same time giving them more weight on their person. @@RiteraRacoonOutdoor Yes I seen your LK35, love it. My LK35 has not been modified as of yet. About 6 mounts ago I ordered the belt and pouched to sew on, but, I like that you placed yours on with the belt. I may do the same rather then to sew them on.

If you don't need the side pockets, you can easily remove the belt. And you can also attach other small bags and use the belt as a molle system
Great review. I have owned an M44 since the late 90's. A couple years ago I found an M40 for sale at M44 prices & picked it up for 30 dollars. Now they are going for over 200 dollars & it's not the whole kit.
Thanks William. I know crazy stuff. I have the four two of each. At the time I paid about $75US each and now I don't think I'll be getting any more at the high prices they are going for. Yes on ebay the nice ones are going for $225US and higher now.
Anytime you store the brass burner in the mess kit, please put it in a plastic bag or else it may cause corrosion.

today I bought such stainless steel (Swedish Military mess kit) a flea shop in Lithuania for only 3 euros! I bought it without knowing its value, I only felt its quality after touching it!

I have 3 unused m40's that were made in 75 complete with new old stock military burner, cup & alcohol bottle. Never issued. I also have 2 alum. ones new (not the copy), complete. Thinking of selling 1 or 2.

@@TBou1983 Yes, absolutely unissued. The windscreen is dated 75 and everything is in new condition, never used. I gave two away to our sons and one is going to my sister if she wants it. I have 2 new alum. ones too.

I want one of these so bad, but I just can’t justify paying close to $200 for it. Hopefully I’ll get lucky and find one at a flea market or yard sale
Man I know it's getting crazy now. I seen one three days ago on ebay go for $167.00 USD and it was in rough shape and it was just for the pot with no accessories.
Nice review. It is my favorite mess kit, very practical and efficient, I own two and use it most to cook in open fire, just don't use the windscreen as a wood burner it will damage badly. New sub here. Greetings from the woods in Sweden 🇸🇪

There is actually a Swedish army can opener, similar size to the P-38, it has, of course, the three crowns on, I think it’s more solidly made than the P-38, think Volvos🤣. Only thing is, there’s no hole in it, so it won’t go on a key ring.

How much???? 😂. I find it quite shocking how expensive they are over here but they are cheaper than that. I bought my aluminium one about 20 years ago for the equivalent of 10 US dollars with all the bits included. Absolutely fantastic mess kits though.
Right now they are going for about $200 US I hear for one in great to new shape. My two Stainless were about $100US each and my Aluminium ones were about $80US each. In all I also received an extra windscreen and three burners and one fuel bottle for free. At that time it was a not to bad of a deal. I do agree that these kits are fantastic for sure.
You should get Yourself a reproduction F.R.E.D originally Australian Army issue Field Ration Eating Device, You can imagine how that title was abused by Aussie soldiers it's almost twice as long as a P.38 has a bottle opener in the side and the other end is a rudimentary spoon 😇

Yes it is. The Swedish kits are the heavies mess kits made to date, I do believe. I'll have to do a volume test on each just to see what the differences are. My Swiss mess kit is a unissued 1965, mint. Originally this mess kit did not come with an inner pan. But the pan was introduced and issued to their troops in 1990, well I just had to have one. LOL I think that the inner pan now completes this kit.
No way I'll buy anything that requires intense scrubbing to get the baked-on food off... This thing will be HORRIBLE to clean out in the field. The guys at Self Reliance Outfitters REALLY should have made this thing out of the same speckled hard anodized aluminium the GSI Soloist pots are made of which are basically non-stick and only require a quick wipe clean after you've finished cooking...
