About 10 day later it caused the ancient wiring in one of our oldest department stores to burn it down. Was quite ‘impressive’ with flames higher than nearby buildings 12 stories higher. A guy who owned a Sony shop opposite made an excellent film with their latest and greatest camera.
I work at a big power plant and our sister plant had a transformer fire, it melted the 6inch steel cables 150 feet above it. Our fire brigades are made of 4 members. It was put out quickly but it was only the 150 gallon spill over oil reservoir not the 20000 gallon main oil tank. Question: Why are they using rebreathers? I have seen a few vids now of FDNY using them. Are they changing from SCBA to rebreathers? Or are there certain situations RB is preferred over SCBA?
They are used for certain below grade jobs in IDLH atmo that have little or no egress points. It reduces the need to swap crews due to low air on extended ops and gives FFs in these spaces and city catacombs a better chance to escape or self rescue.
Mainly weight and time reduction. No need to change bottles for longer periods of time. Also we don't use O2 in the fire service, only normal compressed air.
I use Draeger rebreathers for tunnel rescue and have been a tunnel rescue specialist for about 14 years now. Rebreathers are a special breathing system where you exhaled air is scrubbed using soda Lyme. There is a small oxygen cylinder inside the pack as well (not an air bottle) and cooling ice to keep your breathing air from getting hot and burning you. Every so many breaths the system squirts oxygen into the system so your body receives the appropriate level of oxygen. On average with moderate work exertion you get 1 hour and 20 minutes to one hour fourth five minutes of breathing time before you need to be out of the danger area. Hope this helps you understand.

Rebreather masks reuse the carbon dioxide from exhaled air which then recycles it giving fire fighters extended oxygen supply than a standard breathing apparatus. Rebreather masks are used in toxic environments, tunnels and confined spaces where you need longer oxygen supply.
just as they sound: air supplies that allow you to rebreathe the expelled air and scrubs the CO2 from it allowing for extended use in locations. they’re rarely used by UK brigades but are held and ready for incidents especially in cave/coal mining areas and hazmat areas plus ports
Drager BG4, 4 hour closed circuit sets where you rebreathe your own air with a tiny bit of oxygen added, and CO2 taken out In the U.K. these are £10,400 each
They are only used in high rise situations where an active fire is in process. Saves on the time and energy of carrying up and down bottles on the stairs.
No, setting up rebreathers does not save time. They have to load blocks of ice in the packs to cool the exhaled breath. They are used for special situations like this where the firefighters are going to be an IDLH atmosphere for long periods and won’t have the opportunity to swap bottles. Well, no. It uses a carbon dioxide absorbing material to ‘scrub’ the CO2, leaving the oxygen depleted air ( you exhale about 16% oxygen). The oxygen tank then makes that back up to 21% to match air. Regular Breathing Apparatus just store air.
Notice this crystals ( sodium I think ) going into the rebreather unit , I’m guessing this help the filtration of the co2 to become breathable 02 again. Ensures longer ability and time tk Stay in the hot zone .
The crystals are called "soda lime" and that's what removes CO² from the circuit, fresh O² is then added from the bottle seen at the bottom. That's not to be confused with the ice packs (seen at 18:20) used to cool the air that's heated by the chemical reaction with soda lime.
Its called a rebreather. It scrubs CO2 from your breath and reintroduces oxygen before returning it to the user to breath. They were first created for military diving. Its a closed circuit. No bubbles...

Funny why have all that equipment and no one has mask on in fire and overhaul
5:40 If you want to avoid a nervous breakdown😄
Notice this crystals ( sodium I think ) going into the rebreather unit , I’m guessing this help the filtration of the co2 to become breathable 02 again. Ensures longer ability and time tk
Stay in the hot zone .
I believe it's just ice. @ 24:23 he talks about it getting hot and the ice keeps the air cool...
@@adw311 you are cool, it's just ice
Also pure sodium is extremely volatile on its own, just fyi.
The crystals are called "soda lime" and that's what removes CO² from the circuit, fresh O² is then added from the bottle seen at the bottom.
That's not to be confused with the ice packs (seen at 18:20) used to cool the air that's heated by the chemical reaction with soda lime.
took 2 HOURS to get OFF the island the other day. 2 FUCKING HOURS. I don't know how people live like that.
What happened?
It says in the description. Transformer fire in the basement, heavy CO up to the 3rd floor
That’s the issue they are so ignorant and self absorbed they don’t even let the FD thru. No wonder no one can stand anyone from New York
I want to know those big black things they carry on their backs I wanna know what they for

long durration air packs
Its called a rebreather. It scrubs CO2 from your breath and reintroduces oxygen before returning it to the user to breath. They were first created for military diving. Its a closed circuit. No bubbles...
