- Venezuela claims its citizens voted overwhelmingly in favor of a referendum that aims to take over an oil-rich region of Guyana, the latest development in a long-running border dispute between the two nations. Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali joined CBS News to discuss the situation.

I’m a Guyanese by birth. Guyana’s first mistake was in 1993 dissolving the Ministry of Defense and under funding the Guyana Defense Force and forlorn the reserves. Guyana spends less that 1% on national defense and its military is barely the size of a small division and much of its arsenal is throwbacks from colonial times and Chinese made AK47s. Guyana has no marines, no Air Force, no coast guard, no navy, just a poorly trained ground force.
Edit: if those f*ckers do try to invade, Guyana could easily hold them off with drones, you don’t even need troops. Venezuela would have only one route into Guyana and they’d have to face the Brazilian military first.
Its fine, the money going towards defense was instead allocated towards national infrastructure development.
Even if Guyana spent everything on defense it still would never be able to defeat a real Venezuelan incursion since the Venezuelans have so many more people in their army.
The agreement with Exxon (effectively a branch of the US government) is supposed to ensure protection of the country from Venezuela. We will see if the US steps in to stop Venezuela or not, although it looks like it's impossible for Venezuela to actually invade.
Guyana has round 800, 000 people .. Venezuela has around 28 million people... Investment on defence force could never compare to the size of the Venezuelan defence force.
I agree with everything you just said except for the "poorly trained ground troops".
Please note, we have one of the best jungle training here.
The U.S, U.K, Canada, and Europe sends their troops here to be trained in jugle warfare.
We have a low number of military personnel and old weapons, yes, but don't ever question our jungle training. It's among the best.
Ole bai even if they spent money on the defense force it still would not be enough to confront Venezuela. We don't even have a mil persons in our country. Diplomatic ties is the only and right way to go about this
Guyana defense force would have NOT had the numbers or the training or the resources to go against Venezuela. Venezuela is more than four times the size of Guyana. Guyana does not have a million people.
Standing with Guyanese people.

Again, this is not Guyana's territory, is not Venezuela's either, not yet. Venezuela even supported the very same president talking here and the people of Guyana with actual money and oil ... All of this can easily verified... its fine to have an opinion, but if your opinion is based on nothing other than what the media tells you, then you are just a tool
@@alejandrohayling8381 The territorial dispute over the Essequibo region involves Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela has claimed historical rights over the Essequibo territory, a region west of the Essequibo River that makes up a significant portion of Guyana. This claim is based on historical colonial-era maps.
However, the international community generally recognizes the borders outlined in the 1899 Arbitral Award, which settled the territorial dispute between Venezuela and the United Kingdom (which then controlled British Guiana, now Guyana). The award granted the Essequibo region to British Guiana. Despite ongoing diplomatic tensions, Guyana maintains sovereignty over the entire territory outlined by the 1899 agreement.

In the event of a threat to peace, it's important that we, as the leader country in Latin America, consider all necessary measures to ensure stability. While military intervention is always a serious topic, it's vital to discuss the potential need for action to protect the Guyanese people from the oppressive rule of their neighbour dictator.
