Hi Andrew, thanks for the informative video. I'm preparing resources that will hopefully streamline my approach to teaching in Japan, and I'm so glad to have found your awesome channel! All the best.
Teacher Macs thank you for watching and I hope you get something out of the videos! It’s always great having another creator on RUclips sharing their insight into being an ALT!
Teacher Macs Yes I am, but no longer at the same schools. Adjusting to JHS life. That’s fantastic, I love inspiring the next generation of ALTs to follow their dreams! I heard it’s very competitive for JET in the Philippines and my friends from there have all been the highest quality ALTs. It’s not for everyone but this journey can be a dream job!
HI Andrew, love the video. Very informative. Judging by the "Japanese" lesson plan, is it ok to assume that you don't actually make the lesson plans? is it the Japanese teacher who creates the plans? In my district, the ALT's have to create plans.
Thank you for the comment! Since making the videos, I have changed schools and working at the new schools, and with new textbooks, it really depends on the home room teacher and whether or not I make the lesson plan. Being an overly organized person, I have found that for me it’s best to get the roles set early with the home room teacher about who does what and that includes lesson planning. I have also found from personal experience that if you seem capable and the HRT is not as comfortable making a lesson plan, that the responsibility will fall on you as the ALT but I find it’s best when there is an open dialogue about the lesson plan where both HRT and ALT can discuss and bring ideas to the table prior to the lesson. I hope you are enjoying ALT life!
@@AndrewSaitoh Thanks for the speedy reply and info of your personal experience. I have only been an ALT for one year and your tip about lesson planning and HRT's will be a help to me if I am to be emplyed again this eyar since we have to take the interview every year. Please make more videos of teaching tips and ideas such as warm ups etc. thanks ever so much. enjoy the rest of the winter holiday
If you do not know any Japanese - you're still learning as a beginner - do you have any tips regarding figuring out a lesson plan/schedule in complete Japanese?
Good question, it would be dependent on your Japanese reading ability but if you can’t seem to understand most of what is written on the lesson plan, then my first step would be ask the vice principal/head teacher/HRT, anyone who can understand some English at that school. If no one is available, than another option is to use a translation app on your phone that can translate bits of text. Lastly, often those lesson plans use similar kanji over and over again so maybe collecting a few and seeing which ones come up often and look up the meanings of those common kanji and having a notebook that has the translations that you can carry around. Also, not all lesson plans are like this but good lesson plans usually have part for the T1 or HRT and T2 or ALT, so you would only need to look at the ALT role for the lesson. Hope that helps! Good luck
In my school, the teachers doesnt make Lesson Plans. So i ask them instead what will be the goal for the next lesson and if I make the Lesson Plans the HRTs also doesnt know what is written because it is all in English. They are always busy that we dont even have the time to talk about the upcoming lesson. And they leave it all up to me. I really dont understand why. So no matter how good or planned my LEsson Plans are its no use. I also reached out to my seniors about it and all they say is talk to the HRTs or the English tanto sensei, and dont know what to say. Do you have any advice about my situation?
With being transferred to a different school recently, I’ve also had this experience and if you feel that the HRT is relying on you to solely run the lesson, although it may feel unfair/challenging/overwhelming, then have a well prepared lesson plan and run the show as the T1. If you don’t feel comfortable in the environment to do so, then I would inform the head of English at the school that you shouldn’t be T1 and the HRT needs to be responsible for it. I’ve done both for different situations since being an ALT. Don’t be hesitant to reach out for help/ support if you need it. If you want to meet with the teacher about the lesson plan, then firmly state the importance of it and decide on a time either in the morning of, or before you leave the school for the following lesson when you return at the ES next.
I already reached out to the teacher of head of English and he says he doesnt know about it and he will check it but i waited and waited and it seems kinda like nothing happened and i dont want to sound annoying because i know teachers are very busy. HRTs in some of my school does all the Lesson Plans and They are all T1. Only in 1 school i do have this problem.
@@MoshyShop personally if I felt it is a class that I can’t manage then I would inform the teacher again and make sure that they follow-up on it. Otherwise if I think I can manage, I will T1. It all depends on the classroom environment / atmosphere. Best of luck!
