Zidoo Z10 Pro 4K Media Player: Initial Thoughts & Internal Drive Setup using Mac (no Windows PC)

- I bought a Zido Z10 Pro 4K Media Player/HTPC that runs Android to replace an aging Sybas Popcorn Hour. This video covers the saga of the initial setup, including installing a backup battery and a step-by-step guide on how to format a bare hard disk drive for use inside the Zidoo when you only have a Macintosh computer available. (We don't need no stinkin' Windows!) That is, how to format a drive as ext4 on Macintosh without running Linux.
Since the Zidoo can supposedly play 4K RUclips videos, I went ahead and shot this in 4K for fun.

EXCELLENT! Please post more clips like this! You are the only person who is actually doing a deep dive on these devices!!
I think you are the only person who has actually explained in detail how to set this thing up properly from start to finish. I truly appreciate your video.
I do to!
Great video, I'm also getting one of these. It plays more stuff than the Shield and Apple TV.
Thx for the vid and the info nice
Excellent video. I have the uhd3000 Zidoo and have backed up all my uhd discs via my windows pc onto an external back up drive. I however would like to move them to the Zidoo in the quickest way possible. All up around 5tb worth of movies. What is the procedure to transfer via wifi from my windows pc to my Zidoo. I have allowed the backup drive to share the files on my windows pc but am lost on taking the next step.
Gee Ward, this looks like interesting technology I can understand why you decided to spend your time on inside projects rather than helping your friend out working in an attic. Joking aside I want to read up on it though I'd like to go a little lower dollar.
Heh. Well, next week I've got a PV inverter swap for you!
Nice video, had me laughing. I want the Zido Z10 Pro, but it looks like Zidoo comes out with a new box every two years, I wonder if there's a new version just around the corner?
In many simlar circumstances, leaving that EFI parttion in place can lead to grief. In said circumstances, ONLY the first partition is available for storage so your 6TB drive might make just 210 MB available. I had this problem with an external USB-attached drive on a similar DUNEHD device. The DUNE HD will, however, do its own ext4 format on internal or attached devices.
Yeah, I can see how firmware not expecting an EFI partition might get confused. Good news is that, I *think* the current release of Zidoo firmware will do an ext format on its own.
Any reason not to use ExFat?
Can we use NTFS formatted drives on Zidoo Z10 Pro? How to access INT HDD on windows computer through wifi?
Yes, and most folks use NTFS because most folks have Windows. To access over WiFi you can use SAMBA on both ends. (Also, looks like the latest firmware MAY have a built-in format routine -- finally -- but I haven't investigated.)
@@WardCo Thx a lot for clearing doubts. How many TB HDD is enough for this Z10 Pro? My use case - I keep on downloading the 4K shows and movies and watch on weekends, just to make sure I never run out of the contents. Although, I delete them too after some time to free some space.
@@SunilYadav_sky That's kind of a personal choice. Those 4K shows gobble down 4 to 20 GB at a pop -- but if you delete them after a while, then the disk size isn't as much of a problem. That said, I personally wouldn't go under 4 TB, since those disks are pretty inexpensive now.
Use a docking bay, insert the hdd and then hookup to your pc.
Now just set it to NTFS and your done.
I dont understand man ....you are making this much to complicated for regular pc users.
@@peterraes9352 You're assuming everyone has a Windows PC laying around. Also, NTFS will always be a bit of a kludge on Android-based systems.
I'll stick with my cheap android box. Only paid 35$ for it and it works perfect. Plus I connected a 2tb hard drive to it by USB with 600 movies on it and I still have 1tb left for more movies.
Part 2 please
Not gonna lie I wish i could build my own android tv box, I feel like none match my needs. I want one whose interface isn't crap and doesn't run old outdated android. I also want all the bells and whistles and maybe even user profile switching. Is that too much to ask for?
I also think there is a temptation with these things for the developers to get wrapped up in the "movie poster display" stuff and other fluff and so they wind up neglecting things like being able to play ALL THE VIDEOS. (Zidoo has trouble with some AVI files. Popcorn Hour choked on some DVD .iso, esp. Blue-Ray. And it never did H.265.)
Sure, AVI files and DVD images are a small part of what I want to play, but when I want to play it, it HAS to work...
Love this machine but it's pretty poor that it's not capable of doing HDR10+ below 50hz (defaults to standard HDR10 below 50).
I had heard the "hello my name is linus torvalds and i pronounce linux as linux" audio clip, but this one includes variations on how he says his own name that I found interesting: ruclips.net/video/E9JGP-HeO8w/видео.html
Heh. I like Linus because he is a cynical bitter Finn like me!
This seems overly complicated than just using raspberry pi and external usb hdd dock for a plex server. If you want dolby atmos or need transcoding power for your plex server, just buy a nvidia shield tv pro.
Mac uses exfat so maybe it will initialize and format the hdd as exfat. Zidoo should be able to read exfat.
An expensive device like the zidoo should be able.to initialize and format any external internal storage device. Android smart phones are able to format sd cards inserted in it.
It looks like the latest Zidoo firmware has picked up an "Initialize disk" function, but I haven't tried it. And, as a recovering firmware engineer of some 35+ years, I no longer find messing around with Rasberry PIs or Plex fun or something I want to spend my time on. But, you know, I'm weird, and I'm sure your suggested approach would work for many.
@@WardCo yeah. I just meant, for something as expensive as an nvidia shield tv pro, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to set it up. No need to unscrew things to put an internal 3.5 hdd. The hdd and the device should be plug and play.
What a nightmare with your intiial hardware, the zidoo and the HDD!!!!
I did not like your comment on the beginning on "rubishh"....
Perhaps it was a bit unfair. On the other hand, I'm on trend for the new cold war.
You are cute, i love your review .. 👍🏻
Thanks!
Sudo cute
This is the worst piece of equipment, we constantly have to set up the date and time. Does this company even have a facebook page we can write to?
