  • There are over a dozen references in the Old and New Testaments to “books” in heaven. The idea of such books extends back to Sumer and Mesopotamian (“tablets of destinies”). In this episode, we trace the lineage of the idea through ancient Near Eastern examples, the Old Testament, 2nd temple Jewish texts, and the New Testament. Are these records “real time” record keeping? Proof of predestination?

When Mike said, "....they shall be written in the earth," the first thing that popped into my mind was Jesus writing in the dust when the Pharisees wanted to stone the woman caught in adultery!

Robert Langford Jesus is the personification of the Bible. Both the Bible and Jesus are both referred to as the Word of God...
      John 1:1-4, 14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Jesus said, “the volume of the book is written of me, in Hebrews and the Psalms:
Hebrews 4:7 “Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.”
      This is from Psalm 40:7
“Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me”
      In Revelation 19:15
15 “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”
      Hebrews 4:12
12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
When we put on the armor of God in Ephesians 6:17
17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

Thank you....awesome as always. I love that you say there is ambiguity...and that we can assume that God will decide on how His plan works...and that He gives us these interpretations to show us this.

Great commentary, It has always been my understanding that while we can and should reflect on God's attributes, God's essence is completely beyond either man or angel. Similarly God is said to have no limits but to have a definite character.

I thought I heard Dr Daniel Wallace said one time that the manuscripts don't contain the phrase 'book of life' but 'tree of life'? Just a thought...

+ marie, Daniel is talking about revelations 22, not the chapter that says book, there are two chapters in the king james, and one of them is wrong, and that one is chapter 22 were it says book instead of tree, in latin the word for tree is ligno, and for book is libro, and if you see how they are written in latin with different letters than we have today, you will understand why herasmus friend got confused, and gave him the wrong word.

Could the book of life be a heavenly birthday registry, or is it the same as the Lambs book of life?

From my understanding, per Jack Hibbs, the Book of Life has everyone born in it.
When one accepts Christ their name is copied to the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Then we are judged, rewarded, for our service at the Bema Seat Judgement.
Those who don’t accept Christ are blotted out in the Book of Life.
They are the ones judged in The Great White Throne Judgement.
