This short video shows one of the great things about Le Mans. Where you can have two very different cars in the same race and yet despite all the differences battling hard. The 908 vs GR010 and 917 vs 935 battles were great.
Damn I keep forgetting how quick the LMP1s were. Amazing feats of engineering, but I understand why they got rid. WEC would have taken a serious hit if more manufacturers kept pulling out due to the insane cost to develop them. The change to Hypercars with the big grid this year is super exciting!
Exactly, the racing will be best in top class again. It's a golden era, especially with Lamborghini, Alpine and reportedly even Hyundai joining next year
I never saw that 787B win in Le Mans in 1991, I was approximately -2 months old by the time, but I'm glad it was featured in the video game series of Gran Turismo over the years.
To my surprise, even though it has less power than the Porsche, Toyota & Peugeot, the Audi was still keeping up with them. You should do a gt class version of this, just throwing it out there. Awesome video👍
Power to Weight ratio is a powerful thing! The Audi is the lightest of the bunch minus the Porsche lol. Less Aerodynamics than the Audis newer opponents also means less drag so it can get to similar speeds they can despite the lower overall horsepower. And on a track like Le Mans, you never want too much drag lol.
Is it just me or the Peugeot was heavily under performing here? I'm pretty sure it should be closer to the Porsche than it was to the Toyota. That thing was a beast.
There are so many iconic Le Mans cars, that it's hard to choose which ones to pick, but I think I would've chosen a Porsche 936 over a 935, but eh. Great video, goes to show how fast the LMP1H cars really were in the 2010's.
@@THEWINDTUNNEL Well, the '95-'96 F1 GTR was quite the proper GT car of the F1, unlike the '97 F1 GTR and of course the '98 911 GT1 that won overall, which was "technically" a GT1 car, but we all know it was just a prototype that sort of resembled a road car. Still, I get the decision. Great video!!!
Best Era Audi vs Peugeot 2008 at 2011, Audi 2003 at 2005, Hybrid in 2014, 2015 and 2016.. 1997 1998 1999 with LM GT1, and before with Jaguar XJR, Sauber C9, Porsche 962..
Where are the Peugeot and Toyotas from 92 and 93? Those cars were ridiculously fast, light chassis and V10 engines, they were like F1 cars with 2 seats.
I picked one car from each time period. IMO the Porsche 919 did greater things. It beat the TS050 every race they competed and ended Audi's streak in their first season with a part-time entry. I'll do a video specifically about that lap with the TS050 though
@@THEWINDTUNNELI think the jag v12 sounds better I’ve found old video of them all going down mulsanne and I think jag sounds better see if I can find it see what you think
Good video. Although I suggest that the next time you add the Audi R8 (LMP900), you should use the 2000-2002 ones, because they were much faster than the 2005 one. Between 2000 and 2002, the factory Audi R8 had a power output of 620 HP. After 2003, Audi left the R8 in the hands of privateeer teams and engine power was reduced. In 2005, due to a new set of regulations, the old LMP1 cars were heavily penalized. Due to this, the power of the Audi R8 was reduced to 570 HP, meanwhile the Pescarolos had more than 620 HP as these cars were part of the new regulations.
I'm surprised the Porsche 962 or Mazda 787B weren't faster than some of the other cars in the top five or six cars. Those are very quick acceleration for those two cars.
@@THEWINDTUNNEL they have some fierce competition in both hypercar class and gte am and this is porsche's first year back in top class, I don't expect them to win
if some of them had different starting positions they wouldn't be hold up so much, like mazda for example, look how much time was wasted cuz of the mclaren f1 gtr
787b was crap that's why, a 962 would've smashed it at le mans if not for the bs that allowed it to win, and at the 1991 qualifying, with the 200kg ballast it outqualified the Mazda by 6 seconds,
@@tomlane3522 - I'm glad that people are finally getting the full story on the 787B. A win is always impressive but the lobbying before the race is almost as impressive as the race itself with all the advantages they were given.
@@tomlane3522 I mean... it wasn't going to win by outright pace anyway. After all, it didn't lead a whole lot, only until the last Sauber ran into trouble.
What o fond awkward is how in GT7 THE 787B is faster than the 917 on most tracks, but here there's a massive and considerable gap between the two with the porsche leading instead. I understand that GT7 is a simcade but i wish it didn't have the balancing it has now just so you could see how similar they are if they were in smaller tracks, granted I know there's variables I'm missing but I've never been a big fan of meta balancing. (Edit: 6/8 I realize I had put down the wrong name and that's on me. Yes the 917 is slower but the prototype I was thinking about was the 962. I'm sorry for sounding arrogant for the correction but I get names mixed up with number names commonly.)
What's your favourite era?
Probably when audi, porsche, toyota fought for the title around 2014/2015/2016
Right now actually
I had the Jag XJR-9 scalextric model, so that and the mighty McLaren F1 were childhood heroes. British of course

By the way, Tom Kristensen won Le Mans "only" 9 times, not 19😅

Interesting how close the Toyota and Peugeot were
