    Andy, your video's are inspirational. I swapped the BMS out of my 12v SOK battery a few weeks ago for a JK because my old SOK BMS lacked any control or Bluetooth. Not as plug and play as your video but it works perfectly. Very glad I bought a battery I can service.

    Andy, at minute 19:30 after you switch on the BMS again, please check if the BMS has lost its settings!!! I have 3x PB2A16S20P and they all loose their settings with Firmware V14.13 when they get switched off. Also mentioned this in the comments under the other videos and I was hoping you will notice the same problem on this video.

    The JK - PC application is capable of communication with the older version as JK-B1A20S15P via RS485/USB cable. I tested it already. But it probably only connects at HW level, it doesn't load data. Of course I understand that JK is working on FW modifications to the new BMS versions i.e. JK-PB1A16S15P etc. However, I'm sure there are now plenty of DIY installations around the world with older versions of JK-B1A20S15P etc. And modification of the FW even on the old BMS towards Float and SOC would be great. These functions does not means HW, just software /voltage/time management. I guess it can't be assumed that all DIY will now buy a new BMS and this way the JK would ensure loyality. Kind of like MCS and WIN11 :-) ...

    Andy, you mentioned in the Christmas live stream for the german tech channels that your roof solar is consisting of many parallelized short strings of just 2 panels each. Did you happen to explain the reasoning of why you chose to set it up in such a way in one of your videos? I kept wondering about it, since the charge controllers will need to get to a certain startup voltage (is it 50V for the Victron charge controllers?). Can you reliably reach that start voltage even during shading conditions? What happens to the actual Maximum power point voltage in different shading conditions? The paralleling implies that there is only a single global MPP voltage for all parallelized strings. Does this work if some panels are shaded while others are in full sun? Thanks!

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Год назад +1

      The main reason of these many parallel strings is the shading I have on these roofs. I did some testing with two panels in series and it worked flawlessly (ruclips.net/video/B8O-62Y1dZA/видео.html)
      The voltage is not different if the panel is in full sun or shaded, so startup voltage is never a problem. Also, even if one string is in full sun and another is fully shaded, they both produce power and the MPPT finds the best power point. It will mainly concentrate on the string in full sun as this is what delivers most of the current. The shaded string will just run with it and delivers a bit of current as well.
      In sum, I have 18 of such strings on 4 separate MPPTs and I can max out the panel peak performance.
      Cabling effort is a bit more of course but the efficiency is far better than just one high voltage string where some of the panels are shaded, and some are in full sun. I made many videos showing this in all details. This was all in November 2022, when they installed the solar system.

    More than ever before, but I still wonder when Seplos will deliver their new MASON 280 L , the power tower cause that is more or less a well designed furniture with 15 kWh and a ususal 8mm terminal - but on strong heavy duty wheels. We got one when it became available in late november in Germany, the case for 500€ incl. battery cable 50mm².
    1830€ for 16 EVE LF280K with a complete Seplos BMS meant that we got a battery for 2500€ incl. the Neey 4 compared to our first 8 kWh battery, also SEPLOS BMS with EVE LF160 cells which was about 1.800€ without such beautifull case which is no longer black, but a whit tower 88 cm from the ground, 42cm wide and about 26 cm deep.
    Seplos BMS was needed due to a fleet of 8 Growatt inverters, cause we have 14 Strings to minimize the impact of shadows which means about 4 panels for 30 kWp.
    I guess I will get a JK BMS later in 2024 when they will support growatt inverters too just to start with the 8 kWh battery (grade b cells) - compared to the LF 280 K which were grade a and have 25 Ah more capacity than the 280 Ah promised at least if you test them at 22°C. the difference if you charge them fully is tiny and you do not need to balance while the grade b need a lot of balancing, at least 2 times a month while still having 160,5 Ah capacity as at delivery.

They planned to sell, this what they answer to me on their webchat (before Andy part 2 about this BMS) but when this BMS not work I assume they wait when JK fix it. Maybee now they wait how communication between more BMS will work....

      I will design some 3D adapter plates, so the JK will fit into any of the DIY boxes. That will be a lot of fun.

      I see an rs 232 adapter there that looks like what I think is called a db9 connector. Then you get db9 back to rj45. Looks like there are direct converters online if you poke around, but I don't think Andy got the rs232 to work. What I'm looking for is usb c to rs485, with the rs485 connector being the rj45 (same as ethernet plug format) .@@Vitalya01081988

    Looks like I have the same issues with connecting to the PC like you had with your first JK-PB2A16S20P, I can't get any connection to the BMS via the PC software; I tried 3 different RS485 adapters, using multiple Cat5 cables, tried all RS-485 ports with all possible dipswitch settings on the BMS?? Do you have any idea? My BMS is still running V14.04 and I can't upload the new firmware as I can't get the connection via the PC working... Kinda frustrating so understand how you must have felt Andy! ;-)

      I just finally got it to work! Used the VE-CAN B type cable now; dipswitch on BMS set to 1, I had to use the RS485 port next to the CAN port (just like Andy). Using the RS485A or RS485B didn't work! VE-CAN port profile (Settings > Services > VE-CAN port) set to CAN-bus BMS (500kbit/s)

      And the dots indicate whether you have used the correct color.

    Just wondering ... do you ever get to the place with the equipment you have and say to yourself "Hey, this is working. I don't care if there are new gizmos coming out. I'm sticking with what's working regardless. I'm wondering how often you trade in your car, even though the one you have may be doing all you need it to do? I'm guessing many of the changes you make are for the sake of your video watchers? True or not?

      Not true. I'm curious. Hence this channel where I do tests which nobody else does.
      I would do all these tests even without RUclips. That's how I started. Then I said, hey put them on RUclips, maybe others are interested too. If you are not, why are you here? 😉

    it doesn't seem right that
    BMS is doing your battery management charging instead of your victron.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Год назад

      The BMS knows best what voltage the battery has, what temperature we have in the cells and what voltage delta we have across all cells. No inverter nor Victron system would have these data without the BMS. So, the BMS is the best device in your system to control charging.

    • @MrElciupacabra
      @MrElciupacabra Год назад

      @OffGridGarageAustralia sorry but I don't agree ...BMS is for protection and equilising and not for charging...charging is for inverter...BMS should not interfere in the process of charging ...only for protection and equilising cells.
      In my opinion Victron shouldn't know any info about cells for example...BMS manages this. Otherwise the system will be buggy and not workin properly.
      You could have a fault in your system and you don't know why is not chatging...is it BMS or is Victron?
      the system will not be well separated and this is not ok.

    🆘I have a wish that needs to be conveyed to the developer somehow
    I will describe the problem when charging from a Solis inverter, the massage by CAN are ok, but! when the charge gets closer to 100% it should send a smaller charge current via the CAN, this was on your old SW, please sent this information to JK
    My one is charging same current as it is set in the bms app, it don’t reduce the current while charging closer to 100%
    Obviously, what does it do, current are set to 50A, and from 0% it will charge to 100% with 50A, and it don’t reduce the current as it should do
