    I think that with a little tweaking and redesigning, sekiro’s world could have pulled of no warping like ds1. It not very talked about but sekiro’s world is actually connected, at least when going downwards. Senpuo temple connects to a cave in sunk valley if you let the snake swallow you, and in that cave there is a passage that drops you off at the poison pool before mibu village. If these connections worked both ways, were less hidden and the player more guided to them, sekiro could’ve pulled off no warping. It would go really well with the games faster less limited movement, making the world feel more tangible and memorable.

    On what you said about Elden Ring's replayability, over 90% of the game is optional. I just recently had a 10.5 hour playthrough where I defeated Godrick, Mohg, Malenia, Placidusax, and Elden Beast. If you know the game well enough, Elden Ring's length is what you make of it.

      @grimreefer213 Год назад +11

      @@GD-nu4izNo it isn’t. 90% of your playthrough is spent riding around on torrent doing boring busy work. and this “just rush the main path” argument is dumb because you’d be ignoring 90% of the things that supposedly make the game replayable. Also you’d be at a much lower level so unless you’ve already played the game multiple times and have mastered the bosses then you are going to struggle. Plus you need to get umpteen million smithing stones to upgrade your weapon if you want to use a regular smithing stone weapon. The game is simply too large and riding torrent for hours, doing repetitive mini dungeons to get the items you want is boring. Also the variety of weapons and spells and stuff is cool, sure it’s fun for a few minutes but it doesn’t change the core gameplay that much to warrant going through the game again for most people.

    sekiro didnt really have fetch quests unless you count getting the various items for specific endings. i personally think the dialogue was put there for immersion since this was the first and only game (i believe) where your character is very important from the beginning and actually has a voice.

    • @BillySYT
      @BillySYT  Год назад +2

      The dialogue itself isn't the problem - It's the way dialogue is triggered that frustrates me. Even knowing every step to achieve the best ending, you're going back and forth in the world between NPCs and their locations, and many of the eavesdrop points don't feel intuitive.
      Going back and forth from the Child of the Rejuvenating Waters by using the rice, returning, waiting until they fall asleep, getting them to give more rice, etc. It's just not... fun? Sekiro's story is a good time, but I think there needed to be a more dynamic way of pushing you towards the more hidden endings, because otherwise it is 100% a guide dang-it experience.

    Discovered you today, I like your commentary ! And seeing every single people giving different tier lists and argue on is really interesting !
    Here is my list :
    7 - DS2 Nothing to add
    6 - DeS
    5 - Elden Ring - Yes I HATE open world , I hope video game industry will stop this terrible trend.
    This is the only soulsborne game I almost ragequited because of borenness,
    Recycling bosses 8465415 times (for example boring erdree avatars / tibia / etc...) and the catacombs "bosses" were just random enemies with an health bar and a music (or add 2 of them because we have to make another catacomb)
    I liked the early and late game of this game but the Mid game was horrible --> For 40 hours I did 0 major bosses outside of Renala, I just played horse simulator on empty areas and then some catacombs and recycled bosses
    In your first experience in any souls game you are so excited when seeing a Fog wall or a boss area and you are expecting something new and insane with a new banger of a music.
    Elden ring mid game made me lose this feeling and that's terrible, at each fog gate I was like "yeah lets kill a trash mob with a health bar or a reused boss or a reused boss but X2)
    This game still has really good pros like 90% of the remembrances bosses and FS designed some of the best bosses combat out of any soulsborne game with fucking insane musics ( Mohg , Maliketh, Godfrey , Morgott , ...) but the mid game is just catastrophic.
    Quantity over quality (besides remembrances bosses)
    4 - What makes DS1 fall to me is that Bosses are so underwhelming , the only good bosses are in the DLCs and sorry for all O&S fans but I genuinely can't understand you, I feel like everyone shits on gank fights (for a reason) but why do you only like O&S??? It's just 2 enemy's rushing you and it's just run and find 1 opening every 200 seconds (only perfect gank boss existing is demon prince)
    But the world design is absolutely insane I can't deny it
    3 - Sekiro - Hard to start with the new mecanics but no-hitting bosses was really pleasant in this game
    A little bit of recycling too in the areas and secondary bosses but they are usually ok
    Ishin Ashina gave me SO MUCH trouble the first time but this fight is insane
    But when I want to play a FS game today I almost never choose Sekiro because once you've accomplished it it loses freshness.
    2 - Bloodborne - Insane world/enemy design
    I could travel to an another continent to hear this music
    Give us bloodborne PC please FS that's free 80 € for you
    1 - DS3
    Music
    Best bosses
    I just can't describe how much I love this game
    0 - DS3 The Convergence Mod
    Step 1 - Take DS3
    Step 2 - Remove all trash bosses and replace them with something insane and add Sekiro's movesets into enemies
    Step 3 - Add something like Sekiro to ressurect bosses
    Step 4 - Give Pontiff Sulyvahn the greatest fight in the entire franchise and add a phase 3 with Ishin's moveset
    Pontiff Sulyvahn with this mode is the best thing I've ever experienced in any FS game
    SL1'ing this game is so fucking insane (10 minuts long fights)

      Agree with a lot except for 2 things: 1) The Elden Ring remembrance bosses are not good overall, they’re meh. The only S-tier boss in Elden Ring is Mohg, the rest are pretty overrated, and no matter how cool some animations, movesets, or cutscenes look, they couldn’t get their movesets to fit the game’s combat. They held so much back when making Elden Ring, when they could’ve gone all out and make something really special, unique and innovative. It’s the most perfect lost potential-case in gaming history, and I wish they give the game the same treatment Final Fantasy XIV and No Man’s Sky got over the years, so I can justify actually calling the game 'Elden Ring' and not 'Dark Souls 4', because Elden Ring’s pre launch trailers deserves that.
      2) Dark Souls 1 has great bosses. I like how unique a lot of them are, and how methodical you have to be when fightin them, much more fair design than Elden Ring.

    27:47 “i think there was an element of fatigue at the time and still is.” Ive been saying this since Bloodborne showed us what From can do with a different aesthetic and I’ve since been wanting an ancient Egypt setting. I think that would have potential with the cultural focus on death and the afterlife. Castles, tenements, catacombs, new architectural projects stopped midway, bog, river, wetlands, plenty of variety for locations.

      Yeah I’m with you. Dark Souls 3 was a Dark Souls game so it gets a pass in my book, and Sekiro was a different setting, so that only leaves us with Elden Ring as the only game since Bloodborne (which was the first to go with the unique route) that could’ve been a much more unique game than what it was, which was really just Dark Souls again. Ancient Egypt inspired game by FromSoft sounds really cool! But yeah I hope they’re done with fantasy now, it wasn’t needed to milk that setting for the 3rd new IP in a row.

    No game has impacted me as much as Bloodborne has. Everything that Bloodborne is and represents has become everything I love, it entered my life in 2020 and became my favorite game ever made the moment I beat Father Gascoigne, it was that quick that I realized I was playing something special, and as i continued to play the game, the game became a wondrous dive into madness. The game FEELS like you are diving deeper and deeper into the mystery the longer you play, every new area, every new boss, every new item description continues to deepen the story and makes the world around you both more mysterious yet make more sense. And the combat is the greatest combat system of the franchise, playing with every weapon feels so unique and fun, it's like playing a new game with every playthrough. I love the game with every fiber of my being and I have to actively stop myself from replaying the game over and over again so i can play other games

    My personal list is:
    1. Elden Ring. I've only started playing recently, but I've been having a lot of fun. I've been trying sorcery for the first time in a soulsborne game, and it's great. Using a sorcery/strength build to smack enemies upside the head with an enchanted zweihander is hilarious, and I love how easy it is to respec so I never feel locked into one playstyle.
    2. Bloodborne. Yharnam is such a neat setting, and the industrial city gaslight bloodpunk aesthetic is such a fun atmosphere (even though I'm pretty sure I made half those words up). The gameplay is punishing without being unfair, and it's just wonderful.
    3. Dark Souls 2. It's the DLC that makes 2 better than 1 imo, and it may even be above Bloodborne depending on the day. The story and how it connects back to 1 is incredible, and I just love Drangleic as a setting. The parallels to the first game but unique additions are cool, and it added a lot of unique systems that never got brought back for later games.
    4. Dark Souls 1. Definitely still great, but there are a lot of strange and poorly explained mechanics, the UI is clunky and hard to understand, and the gameplay just doesn't feel as slick as later games. There are also a few fights that just genuinely don't feel fair (Capra Demon) and the balance is a little off. However, I absolutely love the interconnected world design and the lore, and the story is stronger than 2 in my opinion. The only thing that makes it the lowest on the list is that I've replayed it so many times that I've lost the experience of discovering a new area or boss, and that's a lot of the fun for me, whereas I've played the others less and less recently so there's still some feeling of discovery left.
    And I have yet to play the other 3. I don't really have an interest in Demon Souls, it uses a lot of systems that I think I'd find more frustrating than fun, but I definitely plan on playing DS3 and Sekiro at some point.

    Sekiro is the best one actually, and is not even my first fromsoft soul, is my sixth. The gameplay is perfect, every single prostetic is fun and useful, you dont have the freedom of a build on other souls, but you do have freedom on that, this game actually makes you learn about how to play, you need to "git gud" and the reward inside your mind that you receive by defeating a hard boss is something that not any single one of other souls games has made, i remember defeating ishiin and feeling like an actual pro player. The ambientation is beautiful, all the areas like you said are not that memmorable, but when you play it you love it, and more important, this game actually has a perfect connectivity between areas. The combat is perfect, literally perfect, feels like a dance with the parry and you need to flow in it. And last i personally think the bosses are the best bosses made by from soft overall.
    I would rate all games like this:
    Demons souls (7.5/10)
    Dark souls 2 (8/10)
    Elden Ring (8.5/10)
    Dark souls 3 (8.75/10)
    Bloodborne (9/10)

      "is like "my best from soft game" but not the actual best. Its like if someone says resident evil 6 is the best resident evil even tho everyone hates or dont like that game, is your best, not THE BEST." this is just a laughably bad strawman comparison lol, not a single person thinks resi evil 6 is the best, and equating ds2 or 3 to resi evil 6 relative to their own franchises is just silly. man youre struggling to have a point so you can keep pretending youre saying anything objective, you are not. tbh you sound like a teenager that still cant differentiate between his opinions from facts.
      "you need to "git gud" and the reward inside your mind that you receive by defeating a hard boss is something that not any single one of other souls games has made" this applies just as much, if not more so in the other games, especially ER, theres maybe like 2 bosses in sekiro where i felt what youre talking about, the rest are alright.
      "Bloodborne is close to sekiro but has some aspects that made it go 2nd" both these games are nowhere near objectively the best souls game, heres a fact, there are literally dozens of thousands of devs inspired by dark souls and talk about how they inspired their games, yet youll only find 4 or 6 devs talk about or are inspired by sekiro, hell i think lies or p is the first fully bloodborne and sekiro inspired game, that says alot.
      in truth, demons created the groundworks, dark created the loopy open world, shortcuts and bonfires that the industry copy pasted (including bb and sekiro lol) and elden took that formula and finally implemented into open world, on a design level, elden ring is far above bb and sekiro combined.
      you should stop talking as if you speak for reality, you do not, and you never will when it comes to measuring objectivity in video game quality, using resi evil 6 as an argument here doesnt work, since its just obvious capcom struggled with that game day one and it resulted in an ACTUALLY objectively bad game (bad performance, many crashes, bad bosses, bad narrative) theres a limit here to objectivity and subjectivity here. your comment only applies to games that are universally bad and everyone agrees is bad, but when it comes to souls and alot of other beloved franchises, not a single sentence we both uttered is objective (except where dark souls is laughably more innovative and influential than sekiro and bb combined and then some).

    Good ranking, I do agree, and think you explained what contributed to your decision making process rather succinctly. The one thing you mentioned that I rarely hear is how good the mood is in demon's Souls. I remember when I first played it and just listen to those crows in the beginning-such a great used of letting the environment tell a story, and not needing music or other extraneous background noise. Bloodborne has that same quality of mood. . .to me

      I don't think any of the FromSoftware games come close to matching the atmosphere of Demon's Souls, and I stand by that. They absolutely managed to nail every world's atmosphere to a science, and they just never replicated it since. Bloodborne came close though, and Sekiro's ambient noises are superb.

    @amigaway Год назад +9

    To me, your analysis of DS3 replayability is basically what I think about DS1 - I'm fine with sluging through a mediocre early game in DS3 to get awesome mid-late-dlc while when thinking about DS1 I mostly think "what a great game.. but do I really want to play past O&S ?"
    Other than that I'll add to the "Sekiro is underrated" pile of comments but I get everyone has their favorites. I doubt Elden ring will have as much of an impact as dark souls on the industry or on gaming culture (don't get me wrong, ER is great but it's not really creating its own subtype of games nor does it really revolutionize existing genres).

    • @amigaway
      @amigaway 11 месяцев назад

      I'm surprised that you'd think ER has had more of an impact - I think it's a bit too early to tell considering the industry as a whole hasn't had enough time to produce full scale games inspired by ER ? So far I haven't read or seen references to an "elden ring like" game - maybe there have been - though certainly not to the same extent as dark souls for instance. @commanderpp

    • @amigaway
      @amigaway 10 месяцев назад

      @commanderpp Sorry for the rather late answer. I think we differ mostly on what constitutes "influence" - my point was twofold :
      1- it's rather early to consider ER's influence on the gaming industry as a whole (it's a game that took years to make, you'd assume games that take inspiration from what it brings to the gaming industry would take about as long since it's mostly "scale" which takes time and / or a big team. Right now you can speculate on futur game projects but most games being published with the formula aren't really copying ER as much as they are DS - hence ER's influence isn't really "felt" the same way dark souls was. Once you see 15-20% of AAA titles implementing specific design choices that are closer to ER's, then maybe you can argue ER showed that the DS formula could be sucessfull in big scale AAA games. As of now though, it's very hard to tell and games coming out today are clearly more on a DS scale if not smaller (doesn't mean they're bad, just that they're not really influenced by ER as much as DS and that's been the case for over a decade by now)
      2-ER doesn't bring much new compared to the DS formula and doesn't seem to me to be "the next big thing" for most studios because it's a rather difficult formula to get right and most big studios wouldn't want to risk it.
      On one hand it's difficult to distinguish anything ER brings to the table in terms of gameplay that distinguishes it from previous games (which doesn't have to be a bad thing - but does mean you can't consider it the primary influence for most game designers choosing to emulate the DS formula or to implement it in their creation).
      On the other the industry has been mostly focused on making games playable by most people and grabbing new audiences. The more costly the game, the more wide the audience has to be. In that environnement I'm unsure how a big studio that hasn't had their marketting set on "difficulty" could really shift towards an AAA "ER like" game. So far I haven't seen any major developper going for it. It might change of course but I thought (and still think) that it's unlikely.
      Moreover : sales do not equal influence on the industry. A game can sell very well to the public while having next to no impact on developpers (see sequels to popular franchises... or even key franchises mimicking already existing games ?) while some games that haven't found much success in the public's eye (relatively speaking) cab have a lot more impact on developpers (system shock 2 comes to mind but I'm guessing I could easily multiply exemples of "influencial games" that sold less but had more impact than other games of their respective eras on game creation).

    1. DS3 (the first half is somewhat of a slog, but everything from Pontiff Sulyvahn onward goes from strength to strength with almost no exceptions)
    2. DS1 (my first in the series, I’ll never forget the fun I had exploring Lordran and figuring out how to git gud. It’s been awhile since I’ve played this one, but I know it will be a great time)
    3. Elden Ring (I haven’t yet completed ER, it is indeed a large time commitment. I’m only in Leyndell and Nokron with my last major boss being Radahn. The scope of the world is staggering, and at times a bit overwhelming. I’ve really enjoyed the immense scale of exploration, build variety, and legacy dungeons)
    4. DS2 (I actually paused my Elden Ring playthrough for DS2 to give myself something a bit more manageable. Going through for the first time with an open mind, I’ve been enjoying it for the most part. The quirks that are unique to this game have charm, but I do have a couple qualms: the bosses are generally a bit too easy, and the janky mechanics like enemy spam and the infamous hitboxes)

    3. Bloodborne
    Best combat, best setting, and best story of the series, and probably would've been my number 2 if it weren't for the Chalice Dungeons.
    4. Dark Souls 1
    My entry point to the series. It deserves all the praise it gets, but I felt a tiny bit underwhelmed, which wasn't the case with Dark Souls 2.
    5. Dark Souls 3
    Best bosses in the series period, but the game is relatively meh until I reach Pontiff Sulyvahn. If the early game was better, It would've been my number 4.
    6. Demon's Souls
    Prison of Hope is the best area in the series, and I love the high quantity of gimmick bosses, but otherwise I'd give this game largely the same criticisms as most of the community give to Dark Souls 2. Me being a stubborn "no shield, no parry, dodge only"-player doesn't help either.
    The last point is also why I haven't played Sekiro, since I'm fully aware that mentioned playstyle is incompatible with that game.

    4. Bloodborne - Rally mechanic was such an amazing implementation. For me, that's what made the combat and the game.
    5. DS1 - my first Souls game and play it often on my Switch. Does show its age and lack of complete fast travel can be annoying.
    6. Demon's Souls remake - I haven't played the original, but the sound design in the remake is incredible. Atmospheric design is also top notch. They nailed the Prison of Hope feel.

Dark souls 2 should be higher, simply because it feels better in terms of almost everything, so much creativity and the world is so amazing and varied, and suffers less than DS1 world in terms of design, even the bosses.

  • @RecRoomPlays
    @RecRoomPlays Год назад +1

    Personally I don't consider or promote Sekiro as a "Soulsborne" game necessarily. I say it has a lot of the same structure, but it's a fundamentally different kind of game, because yeah I don't think people who have gotten into Demons/Dark Souls or even Bloodborne will inherently gel with Sekiro as well. That being said, I do understand why people consider it in the same vein overall, so it's just a personal point of semantics for me.
    I have a hard time picking between Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne as my top. DS1 is iconic, but it's too clunky to actually play for me to put it above 3 or even Elden Ring, even if I would agree that I think it's generally more replayable. 9 times out of 10 I'd probably put Bloodborne at the top too; the main reason I'm conflicted on it is because I'm a weenie, and sometimes just playing Bloodborne for half an hour or so is enough to overwhelm me because of how oppressive the Gothic/Eldritch horror atmosphere is. That's also why I love it, but since DS3 is an easier game for me to just play, that keeps it hovering in the same range of quality for me.

    I think if you start with Elden Ring you get spoiled on QOL changes. I started with ER and now I am on 3 and I want to pull my hair out due to really small tedious stuff that adds up. So this is where I think its odd you say ER has no replicability. I think its the most time conscious of them all.

  • @mt2r-music

    This is exactly how I feel besides Sekiro:
    7. Dark souls 2 SoftS: its trash. It just straight up doesn’t make fun in some areas. Too many enemies. I sadly never played the original tho. I really want to because I know it’s actually really good especially in comparison.
    6. Demons Souls: I really like the game, especially the remake. Tbh you had more fun with this than with Elden Ring (played it right after the other one). It’s just fun. Not hard but fun to explore.
    5. Elden Ring: to many flaws to put any higher. I don’t like the reused content and quite a few bosses. They are breaking the formula. Endgame is way worse than the fun early and mid game. Going into detail would take too long.
    4. Dark Souls 1: from now on we’re in the S-Tier. DS1s endgame is also not the best that’s why the game is only placed fourth.
    3. Dark Souls 3: areas tend to feel a bit more boring and aren’t that complex when it comes to design. Bosses are the consistently best in series. + best story because it’s the finale of a big trilogy.
    2. Sekiro: not the most impressive story or world you’re playing in, visually not the best the series has to offer but the gameplay is just so good. Best combat in the series. No souls game came that close to being perfect. It’s just clean.
    1. BloodBorne: Worse combat than Sekiro, worse bosses than DS3 due to the age of the game and even slightly worse story than DS3 due to it only being one game instead of three. But even with those flaws it achieves to be the best game fromsoft has ever made. The only way to improve it a lot is by making remake/remaster at 60fps.

      saying elden ring is just open world ds3 is like saying dark souls 1 is just open world demons souls. theres objectively laughably more innovation put into its open world, jumping and horse mechanics than the entirety of bb and ds3 combined.

      @@BillySYT ds1's world doesn't really add that much replayability for me, i end up doing the same sequence anyway because it doesn't make a difference with build and i prefer an increasing difficulty curve instead of a front loaded one that becomes easy later. The skill ceiling is more important for replayability for me. Also DS2 is more replayable because you have so many different paths you can take at the start followed by three dlcs and many build options.

    Interesting. I’ve only played 4 of the games: DeS, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring (yeah none of the DS trilogy; no clue how that happened, just coincidence lol). My ranking would be:
    1. Bloodborne. Yeah basically same reasons as you. The atmosphere is perfection, OST is amazing, monster/boss designs, combat, level design, world design, interconnectivity, it’s all perfect. I also love the lore.
    2. Sekiro. I love the combat and bosses in this game. The main boss lineup is just consistent banger after banger. I also think the world and level design are quite underrated, and overall the game is so polished and fun to play.
    3. Elden Ring. A lot of mixed feelings here; I love the level design, the open world, and there were so many moments where this game just blew me away. I thought for sure it’d rival Bloodborne as my favorite, but I began to realize how bloated it was. The filler became more obvious after 100+ hours on one playthrough; if they had cut the game in half or down to 70% maybe, the filler would’ve felt less egregious. I also really didn’t like some of the endgame bosses. Malenia felt insultingly cheap, and Maliketh was such a chore to fight imo. Mohg and Morgott were fun though.
    4. Demon Souls. My first souls game, and I really did enjoy it. The remake’s graphics are incredible, the levels are great as well. But the bosses are lackluster, boss run backs are so tedious, and I do wish there was a more cohesive world rather than just going into arch stones and picking a level. Atmosphere on this game is definitely great though and it made for a perfect intro to the series, especially with the easier bosses.
