    I can’t wait for them to release their custom geometry switch tracks and all new 9v train motor. One thing I’d love to see would be some 9v wheels that could supply power to something like a PF L or XL motor so the emerald night and crocodile locomotive could be converted to 9v

    Do you remember an article online in the late 90s about a guy in Japan(?) who built Star Wars storybook scenes from (regular bricks available to anyone from store shelves)LEGO blocks of the original trilogy(this is just before LEGO released news of their Star Wars LEGO sets)? I was first online in early 2000, so I was late to experience the golden years of LEGO fans online, but I thought that guy's custom LEGO builds were more interesting to me than the LEGO Star Wars sets on the shelf from 1999-2003! I have found memories of those years! In early 2000 my grandmother returned from a trip with The Ultimate LEGO Book, and WOW, it really shocked me , because before that I only seen LEGOLAND on an Inside Edition television story and from the set instructions pamphlet. Leave to my grandmother to influence me to get back into LEGO in the early 2000s!

I don't have the original download images, since I was using a coworker's computer to surf online, its hard drive crashed and with it all of those images and sceneshots of the early LEGO custom build websites...!

    Nice run through. I don't - sadly - have any 9V trains (yet) but I saw this and thought it looked useful for anyone that is lucky enough to have them. Surprised the cost is so high though unless it's just due to production numbers now maybe? Last I checked they'd only done straights. Are they up to junctions yet? And love hearing your LEGO memories. Good to see that awesome train running around the tracks. One day it will be mine!

  • @ZeldaTheSwordsman
    @ZeldaTheSwordsman Год назад

    I get why LEGO sticks to just the one radius. No, it's not realistic, but it makes starter layouts a lot more space friendly (especially given how big LEGO trains are). It also works better for track pack box sizing. Curves can easily be widened by use of extra straight track, if need be. And the 16-stud straights actually work better for fine-tuning like that.
    But this is still good for availability purposes. *Especially* if they make replacement 9V cables.
    Even with the larger radii you might have trouble running the pretentious 7-stud stuff.

    Lego really needs to make a new cross-compatible 9V/PF train system, with single pickup bogeys to remove the need for giant battery boxes, but also IR transmitters on the control panel so you can control separate trains' speeds and directions with a single controller. Best of both worlds, the non-battery requirement of 9V but the customization of different wheel bases and individual control of PF.

      P.s.: back in those years I have been in the lucky situation to be in pretty close contact to James Mathis. (After his move to Hawaii he kind of became invisible to the Lego train community. James if you are out there - please leave a comment!).
      He was the one who made the "SNOT"-building technique popular to me. And I was in the lucky situation to be in a team with him, Holger Matthes, Pierre Normadin and Steven Barile (and further Lego train stars) when Lego invited a team of train enthusiasts to work on 10183 train set.
      I had the chance to meet all of them in diverse train shows in advance and it has been a great experience to collaborate with them and an official Lego team in development of a real set that could be purchased as a result of our works.
      James had experience in this on this Santa Fe engine and the suiting waggons he designed.
      I still own some signed posters of his art and I can recommend to look out for his Dome Car for Santa Fe Train. It is a great addition.

    There are quite a few altenative plastic track producers out now, for example TrixBrix in Europe. You can get several radii up to r120 and r104 switches.
    Tip: you can convert plastic track yourself to 9V by putting copper tape on it. (some video tutorials available on RUclips)

    • @BrickTsar
      @BrickTsar  3 года назад +1

      Copper tape is fragile and limited results. TrixBrix I don’t buy for personal reasons. This is the closest to 9v I’ve seen.

    Is there any other company like fxtrains that does powered track and motors that are Lego compatible? It's a real pain, and not very environmentally friendly to be forever replacing batteries and dumping the old ones. Also, battery boxes add extra weight for the motor to pull, hence extra strain and power wasted just to pull the batteries. In our more aware modern times, it doesn't make any sense to use batteries in a situation where they're not essential.

      The reason for this is child safety. But I don’t agree Because you can’t get a electric shock from it.

    • @Stiegsfeld
      @Stiegsfeld 3 года назад

      Actually I prefer Power Function and Powered Up against 9V. It adds so much fun to have reverse loops and as many independently driven trains as you like (typically 5...10 when playing with my and some neighbourhood kids). I own 60+ eneloop rechargeable batteries. They do work for years and years and years.

    • @BrickTsar
      @BrickTsar  3 года назад

      The extra weight actually helps with traction. Some old LEGO trains actually included weights! It comes down to a matter of preference. As Ben mentioned - reversing loops become a problem but there are creative ways around that. I don’t know of another company doing 9v. There was one in the past but I think they went out of business

    • @penfold7800
      @penfold7800 3 года назад

      @@BrickTsar I was thinking more along the lines of the Hornby trains style. I think it's 12v but I could be wrong. The argument about child safety doesn't make any sense, since Hornby make sets aimed at children, such as the Thomas sets. Most big toy stores have Hornby sets. I'm guessing the weights to improve traction was what they did before the rubber bands on the wheels. It is a bit odd why it only happens with older Lego sets. That was probably more to do with there only being one speed, instead of a proportional speed controller. Unless Lego completely screwed up the geometry and centre of torque, which could be possible. The older style magnet couplers could have been a problem too, since they don't allow the downforce of the carriage behind the engine to give it traction.

  • @hntrains2
    @hntrains2 Год назад +1

    Those used to sell for EUR7.52 a piece. Two sets are more expensive than one currently-available passenger train. I'll pass.

    I'm cautiously optimistic about the FX track, on one hand its about time, on the other the last company to attempt 9V track took the money and ran on the later orders. Before the announcement I saw talk and planning from FX, they understand the difficulty of the process, but you never know.
    Ultimately if the clone track is going to happen I'd prefer that it comes out of China generics due to cost and long term availability. I don't support Lepin by any means, but when it comes to things like road plates, esp the green ones, that are no longer made I'm far more forgiving.
