Wow this is amazing. Nothing like the great lakes. These container ships are amazing. I love freighter tours so I watch these videos about container ships. I've been on many lake freighters. The ocean is a whole different beast. Thanks for the videos. Stay safe and healthy.
The wave action on the Lakes is arguably more dangerous due to the extremely choppy nature of the waves, and while it’s less cinematically impressive than the huge mountains of water of the open ocean it arguably puts more stress on a ship’s hull. A lot of the wrecks in the Lakes happened due to structural failure. Being on a lake freighter in a storm is less of a “rock” like shown in this video and much more like being shaken around violently.
@@funnelvortex7722 yes Lake Huron and Superior can be brutal in the months of November and December. Erie is known to be brutal during the Summer. I know all of this too well. Watching these videos the waves are huge in the ocean with huge rolls. A lake freighter can add more ballast in their tanks which makes them ride lower in the water. This stops most of the rolling. Lake Superior has its own weather because it is so large.
I was chief engineer onboard tankers for many years & believe me when you're in such situations you regret you have choose this job. Now I'm retired and remind young people who want to join marine institute to think twice before joining.
Was in a force 10 once on a cruise ship. Luckily overnight heading from Corfu to Naples. Another time spent two days and nights in force 8 sailing down the Norwegian coast from Honningsvag to Bergen.
Why doesn't anyone pick up that junk on the floor and put it in a locking cabinet? And why have a mini-refridgerator on a ship without a latch on the door?
Try this but worse in the Southern Atlantic Ocean on a Naval ship, so high we’re the troughs it was causing the decks to crack and had to be welded whilst still under way, add the fact that it weighed under 10000 tons compared to these beasts at around 100000 plus
When you wake up and you see your stuff roling through the cabin because before going to bed you were too laizy to secure it...you know that the day started bad already. but my friend you have too much GM there
Do you mind to share what was the previous and next port of call of this ship? I know Tasman Sea but just curious where is this ship was heading. Are container ships usually make a course change, slow down or speed up due to storms? Thanks for the video.
The vessel was heading from Melbourne to Sydney but due to a delay in the schedule she was forced to stay adrift for a few days where she encountered this powerful storm coming from south to north. Usually container vessels are slowing their speed and keeping the course almost head on to the directions of oncoming waves in order to prevent possible damages for the engine and hull. You're welcome mate!
Hello Sir Alex... Can I present your video clip to our safety and mental wellness presentation? Just to highten the consciousness of the Seafarers. For I know each one has the experience. And some may have a little trauma. If it's ok. Thank you very much. Keep safe always...
I always hated being the beginning of a storm. I guess for some sick reason sleeping in a washer machine brought me peace. That’s how I described the gyro swells; head on swells…just dangerous we took one of the rail then the cockpit shattered, imagine clear glass in water stuck to every surface. Pirates Life
If the crew will prepare the sailboat before the storm must probably nothing will happen. Sailboats usually are sailing using their engines in such weather. The worst situation that can occur is a stopped engine. Hence the boat will become uncontrollable with a risk to be capsized.
I need to ask the sailor of this ship.what if the captain sail the ship according to waves direction.which means the ship sails straight at 180° against the waves direction. So it won't shake the ship right or left side.it will make the ships front and back go up and down only like a wave. So this will ensure a safe cargo delivery for the ship and crew
Good question. At first, the wave height is not constant across it. As you could see in the video there weren't uniform walls of water coming straight to the vessel. The main thing is to reduce the stresses upon the vessel's hull. All force that is absorbed from the wave must be dissipated evenly. If you will go straight, depending on the vessel's design and type, the vessel is gonna have a high pitching moment and if the wave period is almost to the vessel's length you could break her in half because the bending forces will be concentrated in the same spot. By going 20-40 degrees relative to wave direction you are taking the optimal course to keep the vessel's structure within safe limits. In such a way, the force from the wave impact against the hull is distributed more or less evenly. So unfortunately, going straight against the direction of the waves will not ensure the safety of the crew, vessel and cargo. I recommend you to study the case of M/V MOL COMFORT and M/V ARVIN !
At first, we will say "Oh shit". Then we will report the incident to our company and local port authority because floating containers can present a danger for navigation. When we will arrive at the next port of call, there will come an agent from the insurance company. He/she will collect data from the vessel related to the occurred incident and that is all.

It is obvious that your "small vessel" will roll almost every sea passage because you are sailing mostly in the northern high latitudes. Even not significant waves can make your vessel start rolling. For instance, we were sailing mostly in the tropical zone and such bad weather was a rare case. It is just a matter of circumstances in which each one is working. I wonder why you said that I'm crying. If you concluded this from the thumbnail, this is just called a "good thumbnail" because otherwise, you will not have clicked on this video.
