They make it look so simple. But most of not all steps are not true. The front of a step may measure 36 1/8 then towards the back of the same step it almost every time will measure different like 36 1/4. So once you find which side of the step is straight you have to cut the other end of the cap a tread on a slight angle. I’m telling you I have been doing vinyl plank since it pretty much has come out and I have never come across any set of steps that are perfectly the same size all the way up. So I’m just letting all you DYI out there be prepared for this.
How long does it keep its brand new appearance after normal use (normal defined as 3 people going up and down 5 times a day)? 10 per perso n= 30 tripsper day... so how do they look after 1 year? 2 years? So on and so forth?
Seems weird to install the treads first then the risers... by doing so you can see all the gaps left from the risers... If the risers were installed first then the tread it would completely eliminate that gap that we see at 4:12. which looks really bad/not precise.
Do you guys still sell them? I just found out I need type 2 after ordering 20 of the normal one from HomeDepot. Now I have been searching on the internet for the so call "Type 2 Cap A tread" and nothing comes up!
I know your comment is from 2 years ago, but I guess I found the hard way. Bought their original one and now I need type 2 but nothing can be found on the internet. Weird how their box still mention type 2 but we can't find it to buy it.
@@aziatiklover Yep. It worked out well for us, though. Went with a locally-manufactured product. Beautiful, durable results at a much lower materials cost. I had to cut the noses off my pine treads before cutting & gluing the new treads & risers, but we’re tickled with the outcome.
@@tvadpro I wish I could go different way. I got a hella deal for $17 a piece instead of the $49. I guess I will have to shave off the bottom of my stairs. It is just more work but I am sure I can get it done. Thank you for the reply from 2 years ago lol.
you want to go slow and let the saw do the work. do and back and forth motion to get the cut more clean.make sure the tread is fat on the saw. make sure you have a good blade on it.
These are just basic tools. A table saw is $140. A miter is $140. www.harborfreight.com/10-in-15-amp-benchtop-table-saw-63118.html www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/miter-saws/12-in-double-bevel-sliding-compound-miter-saw-with-laser-guide-system-61969.html
Priced them here in Canada, 49$ for 96 " piece, only enough to make 2 treads, then throw the rest away, way too expensive, and I suspect very slippery.
I’ve had laminate steps with a similar system since 2005 the steps literally look like the day I put them in and they get tons of use every day. The tensile strength of laminate is far superior to real wood. It may not look as good but it’s 100 times more durable that’s a fact, every house I’ve ever gone in that had real wood flooring has all kinds of marks and mars and scratches. Laminate will never do that.
This looks like cheap laminate over MDF in a high traffic area. What could go wrong with that? Let's see as soon as you as you chip this stuff and it looks like shit, you will be fucked as the chipped piece will be hell to take off. Unless of course they also make Cap A, Cap A Tread.
make a pattern board. put it ageist both sides to scribe the sides of the tread and cut it to length. you are not going to want to use brad nails lol. you want to use 2 and a half inch nails. you want to install the risers first. dont install tread riser tread riser. do the same thing to scribe the risers with the the board. this is a bad tutorial.

For the installation you will need some BASIC tools:
1. Pliers
2. Tape measure
3. Hydrogen-filled titanium rocket boosters
4. Hammer
No kidding.. I thought this suppose to be the easy option.

Hi Mark. Use "Type 2 Cap A Tread" for those type of steps. It's detailed later in the video

What size brand nails did you use. My stairs are being done right now
I like the tripping hazard they installed on the first landing. :-D
What around first steps (starter steps) that are half circle round on one or both sides!! Can't use this huh?
Hi, after finish the installation, for how long we have to wait before walking over? Thanks
????
Pretty but those white risers will get banged up and show the dirt pretty bad...
I've been doing them like that for 30 years , they wear better than you'd think.
Bravo excellent video
How do I flush last step with the floor, between next stairs?
What do you call the metal track? And where could I buy them??
He used brad nails. Can you use finish nails or will it split the tread?
it will split, it's basically hard plastic. you can pre drill then use small finish nails
Very good thank you, great
Pretty Good!
Hello, what shop did you get the material from to do the stairs?
Flooring associate at Home Depot just told me Type 2 Cap-A-Tread is no longer available. He believes Zamma no longer manufactures it. True or false?
no, i just bought type 2 last week. may depend on color tho. they apparently carried mine. distressed brown hickory

5:25 "No gweater than" lol
VERY COSTLY THIS WAY .
Anyone else have trouble with the finish chipping while cutting with both table and mitre saws?

What about scoring the cut line first with a razor knife, then send it through your saw.
Probably not a bad idea to first put masking tape over the area that you are going to cut.
Should put a disclaimer ! You will $5,000.00 Worth of tools before starting this job for your self....

how much is this product????
Diane Cottrell she died when she saw the price

What a jerryrig system. Oh and cut like shit and caulk it!
Why would you install fake wood on real wood? I mean just sand and stain the real wood...
Risers FIRST. Then the tread
Why
@@mrreams711 Because the lip of the tread overhangs the riser.
@@kennethsouthard6042 Your can do it in any order. I've added risers many times to a set of stairs.
Wow
What about my 2" thick yellow pine steps, w/ square overhang?
Cut the nose end off flush. Install a new tread on top. Stain, paint, vinyl/laminate, or cap it with a product like this.
These are a NO. NO. Contact any experienced carpenter or contractor and they will explain the legal issues to you...
Sorry but this looks awful. will be slippery and probably wear away. Use real wood. Its so widely available and looks so good.

What type of 2 and half inch nails do you suggest?
please stop saying "cap a tread" it's utterly annoying.
