@SuperWinfieldblue Correct, it is like a giant hurricane. Just on Jupiter there are not land masses to dissipate it so it has lasted for centuries.

@brettymike Asteroids are numerous especially in the various asteroid sbelts but space is vast so the chances of getting hit once outside Earth orbit is pretty small (in Earth orbit space junk is becoming a problem).
Bot smaller particles are an issue. Every sq cm of the spacecraft gets bombarded by micrometeorites. Look up "LDEF" and it will give details of same.

Another question if I may -- If I wanted to travel through space to jupiter ,or maybe anywhere in our galaxy for that matter (not concerned with speed) ,what are the chances of being hit by an asteroid,or small fragment of stone etc??
