- That's right kids. 2 comes before 1 just in case you were unaware. This game came before the very popular Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit on PS3/360/PC. This is Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit "2" on the Playstation 2. It seems to be very uncool these days to number anything after the second installment. Anyway let's get to this incredible game.
Back before The Fast and the Furious came out, it was cool for racing games to feature cars that are for the most part not affordable to the masses. After all the Need For Speed franchise was founded on exotic cars. Also after that movie, racing games had to have some sort of reality TV story. Not this game. This game here is balls to the wall speed and mayhem.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is easily the best NFS ever to be made. It's fast, fun, the graphics look great and the sound is fantastic. The music selection the best of the entire franchise. Take note that this is in fact the PS2 version of this game which is the best version by far. The other versions including the PC are vastly inferior to the PS2 version. Reason being is that Black Box of EA made the PS2 version and the other versions for Gamecube, XBOX, and PC were all outsourced to EA Seattle. What we got were two almost totally different games. EA Seattle's version was slow with framerate hiccups while Black Box's version was smooth and fast. Most notably however the "Be the cop" mode was very very different between the new versions. I show two examples of me being the cop in this video. You'll see that have to physically stop the racers by cutting them off and bringing them to a complete stop. In EA Seattle's version it is much like the latest installment of Hot Pursuit as where you ram the other vehicle so many times which drains a......life meter? Then that car is considered busted. Seriously? That's just lame. There are some who like that better since it's easier, but not nearly as fun. The other difference is that you can outrun the cops in the other versions as where in the PS2 version they are on you mercilessly until you get pulled over or the end of the race.
The gameplay speaks for itself. This game is amazing. It features two single player campaigns consisting of over 30 levels each. One is hot pursuit mode and the other is straight up racing. As you go through each campaign you unlock new tracks and cars. Two player is awesome as you can just race or play cops and robbers. This game is so much fun it's retarded. If you're a racing game fan and don't own this game, you're retarded.
The new latest Hot Pursuit may look better, but this game is just still better. If not for anything else Hot Pursuit 2 lets you have a MANUAL TRANSMISSION! After spending quite some time with the newest Hot Pursuit on my brother's PS3 I must say that Hot Pursuit 2 on the PS2 is not only better game than the newest installment, but it makes the the new one look like a HD mediocre turd of a game. Graphics don't make games. Hot Pursuit 2 has everything the new one is missing.

This beats every Need For Speed by FAR. Actually, by MILES. I mean, nowadays, they just say, "Here's a super car now go find em' all." or, "Here's all of the cars in the game with DLC, beat our game!!! :D". I just like how this doesn't have the overpowered spawn-in-front-of-you cops like Most Wanted has. It is just you and the cops with roadblocks and actually FUN and DANGEROUS helicopters.
One of my favorite racing games of all time. Sure the graphics aren't as good as games now, but at the time, 13 years ago, this was cutting edge. Thanks for uploading. Cheers

Oh yeah, this game is awesome. I'm 14 but I still play it. That's because people of my age don't take care about the history and just play new games because of graphics. I don't. I search and research and if the game is good I buy it doesn't matter the game age.

Wow, really good driving there. NFS: HP2 was actually the hardest game in the series to effectively drive without getting any sort of damage. This game was one of the best NFS series ever made, and the best racing game on the PS2 console.
Still the best NEED FOR SPEED in my book: Amazing cars, great race tracks, pumping soundtrack, very nice visuals and a challenging career mode. Perfect!

Wow I always loved this game
Ok. Take a look at some footage of Hot Pursuit 2010. When ever the player simply taps the brake the car goes into auto drift where the car drifts through the entire turn and is completely under control. What you saw at 4:37 was a fish tail. The back end swung out when I hit the break and I counter steered to get the car back under control. You can't do that in the new Hot Pursuit because your car goes into an automatic and computer controlled drift. That's what he means by "drift button"

10 years and this game STILL is the BEST classic game of all time. NFSHP3 went back 2 the old days but I miss those jumps and hills. THat's what made it so much FUN.

This is probably my favorite game of all time. This was the game that got me into gaming as a kid. The soundtrack, the cars, the tracks, everything was so epic.

The physics and feel when driving are incredible for that time and for the PS2. Long live old classics and thumbs up who has gone thrue a similar and awesome childhood :D

this game has BY FAR THE BEST camera in any arcade racer
it 'jerks' back and forth based on your torque and it gives by far the best 'feeling' of torque of any racing game i've ever played

WOW. After reading the description, I started wondering how different the PS2 version was from the other versions, and DAMN you are right. I own the Gamecube version from back in the day, and i thought it was pretty awesome back then, but I definitely DO NOT remember the stages looking this good on the Gamecube, even though I remember the first stage shown in this video. I gotta get the PS2 version now.
No it's called fish tailing. Drifting is a planned and controlled slide through a turn. Fish tailing is the effect of the back wheel breaking loose under too much gravity force and power and is generally not desired since it is a form of loss of control.

This was in fact the case. I encourage you to read Gamespot's review of the Gamecube version. The PS2 was considered the primary version as it was made by Black Box of EA while the other three versions were outsourced to EA Seattle. The PS2 version was not an overhaul, it was simply done first by a better studio.

Yo OldsXCool, I just found that there is a PS2 demo of Hot Pursuit 2, it's from the official PS2 magazine demo disc 24. Have you played that one? Looks like it has some minor differences from the final game because it appears to be an early build.

Hardware means very little when you have the most popular console. The PS2 had the market penetration and the fan base so developers usually put their best foot forward for the primary console. I have 94 games for my PS2 and only 32 of them were available on other consoles. I have 63 games for my XBOX and 35 of them were available for other consoles. The PS2 had REAL 3rd party support and exclusivity.
Love this one more then the ps3 one which is the first but anyway this game while i was growing up was one 3 first games i got ( got three as i got my ps2 at bestbuy) and i could play this for hours i remember i had the meclaren f1 nfs edititon that i would use and it was a okay color and my brother used a differnt car (cant remember) ahhh.... Good memories

Thanx Olds, I appreciate your leashing trollboy. As for the controller issue, like I told him, I have used 360 controllers for many games on my pc. I also use a PS3 controller quite frequently as there are drivers for that that emulate the 360 controller. Controllers usually work quite well on pc games for me. The problem here is that NFS Hot Pursuit 2 predates the Xbox 360 and it's controllers completely. Files (called .ini) can be created that lets the game recognize new controllers.

Turbo i totaly agree with you, just an epic game but there was nitrous. The cops had nitrous but that was implented so well i just get goosebumps seeing those replays where a Cop murcielago speeds away with nitro, Just amazing. Best game evar!

Mostly by spike strip. Sometimes you can get stuck between road blocks and other cars or get spun around. The cops actually need to stop you in this game. It didn't happen in this race but it does happen.
