Everyone commenting on lack of physical buttons or how this is "dangerous", clearly hasn't tried this system. It requires far less attention than tiny dark physical buttons placed low that you need to find and push, or the idrive scroll wheel in the middle, where you need to both scroll and push a wheel without looking at it AND look at the screen. I switched to a new X1 with OS9 from a mini, and it is like night and day. The new approach is very intuitive and all important functions are extremely easy to find and use during driving, while requiring way less driver distraction. Keeping a few physical buttons makes them easy to use as well. It's a job well done and the people that own cars with this infotainment system I am sure love it.
I like how they keep showcasing her face looking at the screen. "Look how dangerous this can be when you need to do this while driving because we're too cheap to add buttons!"
The intuitive interieur of BMW was one of the major reasons to go for BMW in my last 20+ years of car purchasing. When I had iDrive in my first E90 I was completely amazed and was really positive how the infotainment system evolved during the years. I owned several BMWs since then, from 1 to 5 series, Convertibles/Tourings, etc. With every new model it was outstanding that you could still improve the original concept. Currently I own a pre-LCI G21 and a pre-LCI G23 and can likely happen that these will be my last two BMWs for the next couple of years. The focus of BMW on touch-only control is a major set-back to safe driving and massively distracts me when using the car. Also, you see fingerprints all over the display which just looks ugly. I don't worry if you offer touch enabled displays for customers that want a touch-driven infotainment, but for me this is definitely no option to be forced to use a touch-only system. I personally assume the main rationale behind OS9 & getting rid of the buttons is just saving costs, which is a no go for a premium brand like BMW. My latest car, the M440i convertible has a list price of 94k€ and I for sure expect a good product for the money paid. For me as a customer it means that there is a less differentating factor to other brands in the future and keeping me as a loyal customer will be a hard time for BMW from now on.
Guys ... nice to see you're throwing out OS9, but don't forget about those using OS7 and OS8. You still have OS7 cars for sale and it would be nice to give OS7 some bigger Updates as well. I'm not talking about compatibility patches but more features, new UI and so on. The OS7 i have in my brand new X3 is the same I had in my 2020 3 series - can't be so hard to add some features like offering the OS8 dash as an option right?
I believe that once you've driven an X1, X2, or Series 2 AT equipped with iDrive 9, you'll change your opinion about it. I just got my car with iDrive 9, and I already regret buying it. iDrive 7 was really good, and iDrive 8 was just okay, but iDrive 9 seems to be all about cost-cutting measures. They've gone so extreme with these cost reductions lately that my car came with a hole where the glovebox light should have been.
Dear BMW, I still want physical buttons for climate & volume control as well as an idrive scrollwheel. Touch, gesture and voice control alternatives just aren't working and distract you from watching traffic. Skip the buttons on the next X3/X5 generation and we'll switch brands.
I remember when people were complaining about the new generation of cell phones, not being able to press buttons, so on and so forth... 15 years later everybody is on board... Sometimes we just have to let go of the past, and move forward.
@@KreolaBoybut you are using your phone while looking at it. In a car your attention needs to be directed towards the traffic and you can’t do that while operating a touchscreen. Buttons, due to their physical nature and haptic feedback, allow for undistracted operation. In cars it’s nothing but cost cutting.
Physical button or software button on a screen, you’re still looking at it and then pressing it. At least with the screen it’s mounted on top of the dash so easier to use while driving.
How can I change the widgets around in the control display, please? That was super easy previously but not with the new version. In general, it is way to touch screen and voice assistant orientated. That's not so much fun and more tricky ... Preferred physical buttons!
Just taken delivery: UK, female age 76!! The bottom line to all this technology, is VOICE command! Once you get familiar with the on screen function - all starts to fall into place. I have driven a manual until 3 years ago, then an X1 automatic now the newer with Hi Drive 9. Thought I'd miss the buttons. I always had the old bangers that lasted until the wheels fell off, himself hand new ewer cars every two years - the jump in technology was vast for me - but here I am :)
I have this iDrive 9 system in my new 2024 BMW Series 2 AT U06. It is very buggy and takes a long time to switch between the phone, navigation, and climate menus. It also takes a long time to load after I unlock the car. The voice assistance is only partially implemented (it doesn't open windows or the sunroof). I mainly regret buying the car because of this.
Pretty nice, but it's funny to have a Infotaimentsystem like this in a car, but you're not allowed by law to use a phone while you're at a red traffic light. For your Phone and the Idrive System you have to touch somewhere at a screen, which turns your attention not at the street. Have a nice wednesday :)
Hope they roll it out to all more recent models. Tho I guess they will hop on the Microtransaction-Train with it even more. At least I hope that they don’t trade fancy graphics for functionality, I liked the OS8 interface. But sure, more frequent updates would be nice, especially more customization of things like drivemodes. Would love to see a „Max-Range“-Mode also on smaller i models. Also migration of all „Pro“-Version assistants would be nice, miss the parking features on my small i model. But I guess it’s mostly a graphical overhaul with Android integration so that you can play car games or watch a movie while charging
Apologies but I have a question for iDrive 8.5 on how to set my Home address. My i4 can’t locate my address properly. Is there a way to set the current car’s GPS location as the Home Address? Thanks
Who's driving? I see the driver with her left hand on the wheel guiding her right hand with her eyes. Hopefully with the loss of real buttons the gesture control features have advanced three-fold. Voice commands are not the answer they require a quiet cabin and Google-like expertise. We love our G01 exec, but have no ideal now what we will replace it with.
I click once on the screen or once on the climat control. They aren't stupid, if it is hot or too cold, 1:31 the system automatically blows like crazy. It really is no different.
The difference is that when the button is physical you can touch it without even seeing it so you can adjust the climate without being distracted from driving. When the button is not physical you must turn your eyes there and this is difficult when driving
Lack of safety physical buttons anywhere on newer models like the U11 X1? This video is perfect evidence of how distracted the driver has to be to operate the new iDrive 9. Ridiculous!
It’s a model demonstrating for a video while sat stationary. If you struggle to prioritise driving over pressing a button on a screen (just like pressing a physical button) then you shouldn’t be behind the wheel.
Your iX will get an update to 8.5. It's just not out yet. ALL vehicles with iDrive 8 are eligible for 8.5. Be glad you aren't getting iD9. It has an Android OS, whereas the iD8/8.5 system is Linux based.

@@radglitch7233 Not really. Only cars manufactured after 03/2023 will get upgraded to 8.5.
Android will offer the possibility of standard android apps, and other android loveliness. Also, far more processor support, connectivity support out of the box. A no brainer for BMW.

@@jellyd4889 Android is not the issue. The problem is the user interface of the BMW part (the Launcher in terms of Android OS). Slide and swipe gestures are fine on small devices that focus fully on what you do.
