I hope you guys enjoy the review. In retrospect I have already thought of several things I missed covering, like the rehaut engraving on the Rolex vs. the lack there of on the Ginault and the dial printing and branding - among other things. I was trying to keep this video well under an hour though and some things slipped past me. Also, I know people will ask for it, and I'm sorry, I forgot the wrist shot - actually I filmed it and forgot to cut it into the video (doh!).
Very nice review, I have a Rolex 16600 and a 16613. The genault is very well done. I plan to pick one up as well. Btw the 16613 also has a gold colored background on the date wheel. They went to a white background around 2007.
I recently got the OR2 cermaic GS lume. Absolutely infatuated with the watch. Everyone who has held one can attest to the sublime quality of this timepiece. I think it's ironic that Ginault have taken all the best design cues from a Sub added a dash of their own spices and created a watch I think actually looks better than the original. Honestly, for me this watch has ended my lust for the next watch, it will be on my wrist for the rest of my days :)
@Abe Froman no not really. The watch on my wrist says otherwise. I own a rolex explorer 214270 and to be honest apart from the movement the fit and finish of the Ginault is just as good.
@Abe Froman I couldn't care less where it is made. If it is made in China then it is a massive compliment to Chinese manufacturing. I bet you have never owned one or seen it up close and personal.
Always loved the Rolex Submariner but once they got past $5000 (which is still too much money) but at today's prices at almost 10k thats crazy for a dive watch
Great Review: One of the best! The most important words you used was diminishing return as you go up in the value of different watches. Everyone seems to want a number; (8 times more expensive vs only 2 times more the quality). I don't think you can honestly put in numbers and I'm sure you were only using them as examples. Rolex and all luxury brands are overpriced if looking strictly at inflation guides. A new Rolex Sub w/date in 1988 was around $1500 and the inflation rate of the dollar from 1988-2018 was X 2.11. So a new 2018 Rolex Sub would cost $3,200 if only inflation is used. This is sort of interesting as $3,200 is about 2 X the cost of a new Ginault. So what am I getting at? I have no idea. But I do own a Ginault!
Thanks for watching Roamy. You're right it's hard to put a number on it. I've had people ask, is the Submariner 2x better, 10x better? I can't really put it in those terms. All I can really say is yes the Submariner is a higher quality product, you can see it in the video and especially when you hold them both in the hand. But, the Ginault is a really well put together watch and for the price it seems like a lot of value.
So I've been contemplating a Ginault for some time now, and this video pushed me over the edge to get one. I play guitar, and the best analogy I can come up with is that I can't afford a Martin (American made), but Eastman (Chinese made) makes an homage guitar to the Martin D-18 (basically the Rolex Submariner of guitars) that lives up to the Martin in many ways. Is it a Martin? No. But it's a great guitar in its own right at a fraction of the price. In fact, there are a few things that the Eastman offers that Martin does not (Adirondack top, engraved headstock), which it sounds like is the case for Ginault too (mil-spec hands, smaller lugs). At first I kept comparing the Eastman to a Martin, but then I started really appreciating it for what it is, a very high quality guitar that plays and sounds extraordinary. I'm excited to order and own what sounds like a very high quality watch and hope to enjoy it as much as I enjoy my guitar. Thanks for the review.
I like the analogy between guitars. I'm looking to upgrade from the Seiko 5 of acoustic guitars (Epiphone DR100). I'll have to look into the Eastman you mention I wasn't familiar with them.
@@JustBlueFish I have the E10D, Adi top, Mahogany back and sides, x braced. It's basically a D-18, though the D-18 has a Sitka top unless you spend even more $$$ to the the Adi top. Great guitar. Good luck.
Considering there is a 7,000 dollar difference in price, and the quality is "realistically and reasonably close" for the Ginault, I have been convinced by your near perfect review. I can now say that the Ginault is doable for me, whereas the Rolex is not. If you have a bundle of money in your bank account you're probably going to buy the international icon of dive watches. However, if you're a regular guy working a regular job that doesn't pay a lot of scratch, that Ginault is a great buy. My favorite part of that watch is the nicely muted matte finish to the bezel. Solid, well-presented review. Keep them coming.
Someone said something to the effect of, "It's half the quality for an eight of the price." It might be better than half of the quality but it's a good way of looking at it. The Ginault is a very well put together watch, and for the guy that loves the Submariner aesthetic but hates the Rolex price, it's the probably the best possible option out there.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Agreed. We almost all want a Sub, but what % of us can actually afford one! For 8,000 dollars, I can pay off almost an entire year's worth of rent.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Rent trumps a Rolex in my reality and I hate like hell to even say that because deep in my heart I have to agree with you.😂😂😂
I went a different direction on my first new Rolex and bought the Explorer II 216570 42 mm Polar. I'd always loved/liked the Rolex Sub but sort of found them to be too common after many years of lusting after one. Now that I had my new Rolex I still liked the Rolex Sub but did not have the means to buy one (man can't live on Rolex alone). So I did go for the Ginault. I like the slight differences between the 2 brands and Ginault's decision of using 3 eras of Rolex Subs to combine into this version.
23:35 I'm personally a sucker for red second hands, it makes the watch look more vintage, way to go Ginault! Also, the engraved rehaut on the Sub could be done in a more elegant way, my opinion. The magnifier is definitely better on the Sub, though.
The aluminum bezel is the only knock against the ginault. That watch is damn near flawless. With that said, there’s a reason companies pay homage to the Rolex. It is one of the greatest watches ever constructed.
Great job! I own the Ocean Rover and just love it. I feel I have a high quality watch that will last for a long time. Most of the differences you mention require a magnifying glass to see. If you are thinking about getting a high quality dive watch without spending $8k+.. this is a great choice.
Thanks Doug. I agree you have to look very closely to see the differences in quality. It's like half the quality of the Submariner for an eight of the price.
I know that I may get bashed for this but, I own BOTH, and I wear the Ginault FAR more. The Ginault is just fantastic, if they improved the bezel insert with ceramic & lume and just a bit better finishing. it would really bump it up. Great video and Great watches!!!
I've had both and I agree. Do I love my Rolex, absolutely!!! But for a 3rd of the price, I can set my Rolex aside for when it matters and where my Ginault proudly, jr
Excellent review! I bought the no date 181070 GLSN model a year ago and I love it. I didn’t experience any problem with the articulation of the links of the bracelet: they don’t stuck and the articulation is smooth. The clasp has no resistance to open as well. Anyway comparing Ginault to Rolex is really difficult. In my opinion most of the owners of a Rolex didn’t buy a watch, they bought the brand whatever the watch looks like. In these terms the more expensive the watch..... the better the status.
Great video as usual. And for most people, they might be more likely to use it outdoors/salt water environments when the Rolex might be at home in the safe...
Ron Power Oh shut up... Hyundais have been leading the way of introducing technology at a lower cost to its customers without sacrificing quality. Their cars range from $17,000 to well over $70,000. Lots of people still want a Mercedes-Benz, however, lots of people buy Hyundai as well!!!
I’m actually one of the people who really likes, possibly even prefers the super case. I’m a huge fan of the Ocean Rover but I might like it even more if it did have slightly thicker lugs. Either way, it’s an incredible watch.
Guy really well done. Imho this is an important impressive review as the mil sub is a historically important piece that almost no one can ever have - nor will ever be reissued or worn . Therefore this piece is as legitimate and necessary as Govbergs Gevril Paul Newman - beautiful rendition. We admire what these pieces represent and imo its important to be able to see and enjoy them in a top quality production timepiece. Thanks Guy. 👍.
What an outstanding comparison between these two watches; thank you for putting it together. I have an Ocean Rover myself and I took a look at my bracelet; I don't have the grittiness that yours does. Mine is very loose and articulates very nicely.
I'd be curious to know Ginaults thoughts about making improvements to the watch based on this review. For me, a ceramic or sapphire glass bezel and improved bracelet/clasp would seal the deal.
Own both a 114060 and an 116600 which in my opinion is the best seadweller out of the various versions. I also own a Ginault OR1 and I have to say I love it. It’s the sub that I always wished Rolex would make. You’re also nitpicking to find differences in outer build quality. I see people talking about the brushed finishing on the bracelet etc….I honestly don’t see it. Maybe different…but neither better or worse. Bezel action on my seadweller is outstanding though and neither my sub or ginault bezels compare.
Informative review guy, thank you. I don't understand why a company would make an homage from another company. It's a lesser of a copy and you'll always be reminded of it for me. Thanks again
Thanks for watching Dan. I like homage watches in general, but it would be very interesting to see what Ginault could do with an original design and the same level of quality.
Great video, own a few Rolex watches and have had a few more over the past 25 years. Bought the Ginault because I got a great discount and really wanted to check out the quality. In the end I really enjoy my Ginault OR and feel the quality is excellent and after more than a year the timekeeping is still very accurate! Again, Great video.
I’ve had my ocean rover since 2017. I swear it barely misses a second per day. My seadweller is pretty consistently +3 seconds per day. May have been luck of the draw, but besides my GS spring drive, the ginault is my most accurate watch
I bought my Submariner in 1975 when first entering the Air Force. It's all beat-up but going strong. I have taken it to a jeweler in San Diego every five years for service and they keep saying that they would be willing to purchase it. I would have no qualms buying one of these Genaults so not to feel anxious about wearing it daily.
Kudos to a very informative review, one of the best out there and certainly very honest and educated, too. I like how basically every detail is discussed, explained and integrated into the final vision.
He will eventually get on your nerves and you will unsubscribe. The guy constantly uses back to back synonyms when he structures sentences. That combined with the grunting and throat noises that make you feel like he's doing the review while taking a deuce will get under your skin over time.
904 and 316 stainless steel both have their pros and cons. It would depend on what they're being used for if you wanted to say one was better than the other. 904 will tarnish less but scratches more easily because it's softer. 316 on the other hand won't keep as great a shine but it's stronger and harder to scratch. And you wouldn't be able to tell the difference without an NDT. So I'd say if it's purely a dress watch then go for the 904 and the 316 is better for the everyday/work watch. And even though it may be rolex's own formula, 904 is 904 the composition of it must be within a certain tolerance in order for it to be 904 SS. But with that they can truly say everything is in-house.
I have never been a huge fan of the Sub and always thought to myself it is a nice watch but I would never pay 8k for one. I guess a large part of that is the fact there are so many watches that look just like it. Well in this case you can see the Ginault gives you pretty much the same watch for a fraction of the cost. And beyond the thicker lugs and the name of Rolex, the Ginsault really gives you the same thing for the most part. In this case the Ginault wins this if we are considering it a vs as per cost to quality.
Absolutely spot on measured review. Own both and the ginault works perfectly for me in the work environment As I don’t particularly like wearing a Rolex to the office the ginault proves a perfect companion. I also don’t mind if there are scratches and scuffs along the way and in many ways the dirty dial configuration lends itself to a very worn look.its a watch that has purpose and works well in my collection so feel that it will be with me for the duration. I don’t know that I would have paid full retail for it ,but at the price purchased I’m more than happy..
Obviously it's easier to compare when you have both things you're comparing and you're not going from memory. And obviously the ORII 4 years later is even closer than the OR 1. And that isn't even accounting for the Silent Service. That said, the very fine comparisons you are making here are an awful slight thing to hang $9K on, and that is at the unattainable retail price. It's awfully difficult to justify the higher money unless you REALLY want to. That is how I think of it. I'll note that my ORII glide lock is a little smoother than that, maybe still not the equal of Rolex but way better than one I had on a Parnis.
Have you ever put the Ginault on your Timegrapher? I'd like to see what that looks like as it is supposed to be a chronometer and that should show up on the Timegrapher. Thanks for the review.
Excellent review. (Nb I bought the no date ginault at the outset with considerably discounted price, with black bezel and where the red 2nd hand works rather better in my view)
Talk to other Ginault owners, including myself. I will never sell my Ocean Rover. Rolex messed up with the wider case lugs and they do not offer the sand lume or the Mil-spec hour hand like the Ocean Rover. There is nothing tangibly better about the Submariner!
Nice review. I wish you had the ginault OR with the blue lume to compare. I think the off white background on the date is to match the sand lume. Also is the tightness on the bracelet (and clasp) due to the ginault being new and not broken into?
Let's compare these on the timegrapher and also on the wrist when it comes to accurate time keeping. Then let's see how they're both doing 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years later.
I've put them both on my timegrapher. The Rolex runs impeccably of course, the Ginault also show's a good reading but not quite as solid as the Cal3135 in the Rolex. As far as 1-5-10 years from now I have no doubt the Rolex will be the long term winner in that regard.
Guy did you mention any differences in the chapter ring? Please do keep up the good work! Outstanding review!!! How does the Ginault stack up vs a Steinhart? THX and take care
There were a few things I didn't touch on in the comparison. If I could go back and do it over I could probably have another 10 minutes of content that I forgot or overlooked, but I think I hit on most of the major aspects that needed to be covered. Regarding the Steinhart, I've only reviewed 1 Steinhart. I reviewed the 42mm Ocean One a while back, and compared to that watch the Ginault is significantly higher quality in terms of build quality. That's not to say the Ocean One is a bad watch, at its price point it's quite nice, but it's not to the level of the Ginault.
Great review! While somewhat controversial among watch enthusiasts, would you do a detailed review of a Stuhrling Tourbillon watch? I own one and personally find it to be remarkable quality. People are skeptical of any tourbillon watch under $10k, be it not totally unfounded, though I think sometimes unfair. I would appreciate it! Thanks!
Very detailed comparison - thank you. Sorry for the Ginault fanboys, but you should buy the real thing or if you are on a budget get a Tisell Marine Diver. The looks of the Tisell is closer to the Submariner and the quality is very close to the Ocean Rover - for under 200$. If you had the chance to hold both the Ginault and the Tisell in your hands you can tell.
Ideally having both a 5 and a 6 digit Sub on the table would have been great, as there are design elements from both generations used here. Sadly I don't own a 5 digit or have any friends near buy to have loaned me one for the video.
Very interesting report. Rolex shows to be highly overpriced. Rolex Submariner used to be a tool watch. I own a 1680 Sub from 1976 I got from my dad. Its price was US $507. Prices have gone insanely high. I use Phoibos homages (automatic and quartz) for dayly beaters. Realy good price value options. Thank you for real profesional job!!
At some point someone is going to make a watch that meets and even exceeds the quality of the Rolex at a price point at or below $3000. Maybe it will be a future release from Ginault. But yes, the Rolex is probably overpriced in most regards. The wildcard that I have a hard time quantifying is the in house Rolex movement. If we forget about that and say all other things being equal the Submariner should be a $3000 watch, how much extra cost does the movement add? Even if the movement doubles the price the Sub should probably be $6k right?
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Good point. Besides that if they are golden, then how much gold does it have to increase the prices 3 times? What is the real price diference in 316 L and 904L stainless steel? Initially they were tool watches, demand has turned them into luxury items...
Which Marine Master, the SBDX017? That watch was discontinued a while ago so it's gonna be harder to find. It's also much more expensive, even when it was in production. Aside from that they are very different watches. The Seiko is a 44mm watch that is 14.5mm thick. The Ginault is much smaller, which may be good or bad depending on your perspective. I haven't spent any real time with the Marine Master so it wouldn't be fair of me to say which one is better than the other, but I would expect that for the price the Seiko should be a higher quality watch.
Most people's thought process: "The Rolex is the significantly more expensive watch, so it must be better in every category just because..., and therefore the winner. The Ginualt does something different from rolex, and because the Ginault is cheaper, it must be the less impressive design." *However, to me, the ceramic bezel and AR cyclops alone are worth the extra 7 grand. If ginault did those, then I might consider them.
I talked to John at Ginault about the AR cyclops. They said they were looking into it but at this time it would add about $200 in cost to the watch to make that small change. I don't know if they will offer a model with it in the future or not.
Just discovered your channel and you are quite impressive on how thorough you are. I would have gotten the Ginault by now but not having a sapphire or ceramic bezel insert is a big no! I would love to see you get a hold of a watch from the Orange Watch Company. There quality even seems better than Ginault but much looser on the Rolex design.
Like I stated above, not everyone is into ceramic yet. Breitling has just gotten into the game. I've had many ceramic watches and there are trade off's. Ceramics don't fade and can be beautiful to look at with their high gloss, yet they shatter easily and do scratch. Aluminum bezel, as in many classic Rolex GMT's, age in a way that makes them classics and desirable, even though they may be prone to scratching. jr
I don't know. The Oris has a lot of things going for it. A nicer bracelet (but perhaps not the clasp), ceramic bezel, a more unique design. Of Course at full retail the Oris is more expensive. If I didn't have a Submariner and couldn't conceivably afford one I might very well pick the Ginault because I love the design. If I was less of a Sub fan the Oris might be the one I pick.
Thanks for offering your opinion. I am wavering between the Monta, Ginault, and Oris in the $1000-$2000. I am also considering making the jump into acquiring a Omega Seamaster Professional 300 or one the Tudor Black Bay pieces.
After handling both, I personally went with the Ginault. I think it has that quality "feel" which we seek in timepieces, more so than the Diver 65. I am a big fan of Oris; I have a F1 which I will never be rid of- but in this particular case, I vote Ginault.
I'm not comfortable spending that much on an homage watch. I'd rather get an original design for $1k+. I do have to give it to Ginault, the quality, fit and finish is worth the money they are charging. Another thing I don't like on the Ginault is the faux petina on its lume. But, if someone gave me a Ginault, I'd gladly accept and add it to my collection. 🙂
It's not a small amount of money and if you don't love the design you should definitely consider other options. But if you are a fan it's a really well put together watch and I think you're getting a lot for your money.
I’ve been looking forward to this video. I think Ginault picked the right channel to get an in depth comparative review. I don’t doubt the quality of the Ginault and the marginal differences to the Rolex... however IMHO you could substitute the word homage for copy. Personally, I prefer originality. I mean come on “Kinetic Continuous Date” - “Oyster perpetual Date” .. and would have liked it if Ginault took styling queues from Roland here and there but not to the point of the exact font, the same brush and polish edges, same writing on the dial etc.. 50 years from now the Ginault will still be an imitation of something else unlike the Rolex.
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it. You definitely have a point, it’s hard to debate that. I’d love to see what Ginault could produce in terms of an original design. The quality is there, hopefully next we’ll get to see their creativity.
Rolex will always be in a class of its own. Knowing that there are micro brands that can come close is always encouraging to us who can't afford the King!
Yeah it's not bad .. you can decide for yourself: shipped it out today so you'll have it maybe by Monday! For me to note:Better lume and bezel than previous Steinhart's I've had.. face/hands remind me of a Tudor Pelagos for some reason, if only it had the flat flush crystal .. Cons so far, no AR coating I think? .. and for some reason the clasp when I sit my wrist on the desk to do server work seems to dig into my wrist .. So let me know when it shows and what you think!
Excellent review my friend. Would you say the Ginault is 70% as good or 80% as good as the Rolex? Have you reviewed the Monta watches? Only they and Ginault...nobody else has the 1000-2000 microbrand price segment locked tight. A comparo is in order!
It’s hard to put a number on it, especially because we can’t truly compare the movements. The Rolex 3135 movement might be 10x or 20x the the quality of what Ginault uses. But not including that, yeah it’s pretty close.
Does the Sub have the glide lock? I couldn't live without it now that I have it. I use it a couple times of day. I also love the gold sand and red combo.
Ironically, it would be more likely that the Rolex clasp gets accidentally hooked open by, say, a stray thread, while this wouldn't be an issue for the Ginault! :)
Yeah but... are the 9’s the same? No 9 is better than a Rolex 9. Seriously, fantastic review. I wish Ginault would do away with the red seconds hand as well.
Do you mean the 9's on the date wheel? Since today is the 9th and they're both sitting here in front of me, I can say yes they look pretty much the same. Thanks for watching Tyler.
They look pretty cool. I'd love to check one out. eMail Monta and let them know you'd like to see me review one and maybe they'll send me a sample watch to borrow?
17:15 why they don't use a matte finish on the ceramic bezel at Rolex is a mystery to me. Maybe it's just not possible, I wouldn't know. On the other hand, the platinum-filled markings are a real winner with the Sub. Other than that, the older style aluminum bezel has more charm.
Excellent review, that Ginault is a lot better quality then i was expecting but would i spend the money on it? probably not, if you really want a Sub you get a Rolex Sub.
I have a rolex Air King 34 MM, the clasp on the Ginault is better than my Rolex. OK I am sold on this watch, sorry Tudor this is $2000 less than a black bay. I have my rolley I guess I will call this my Ginnie
Its a wrap, well done, your reviews are a pleasure to....watch:-). really consider getting a Ginault, it seems to be good bang per buck. Have a nice weekend.
A lot of people feel that way. I'd be very interested in seeing what else Ginault does in the future. If they keep the same quality level and start producing an original designs I'd think they would have something special on their hands.
Disclosure was good but missing a key fact. Ginault offers a steep discount for RUclips reviews comparing the real deal or another homage. It is possible and likely the reviewer profited.
Definitely. The movement is a hard piece of the puzzle to quantify. While I know the 3135 is “better” buy what degree and the amount of value it adds is difficult to say since I have real technical training. I’m sure there is no comparison though.
I am wearing my Ginault Ocean Rover as i type this. All homage bullshit blahblah aside, the Ginault is an outstanding, superb finished, high quality watch. For the money ( i paid € 750,00 for it, new ) it is the best value for money watch i have ever owned. There is no other watch in this Ginault OR price range i know of, that is better finished, higher quality than this timepiece. To make my statement complete, i am the owner of several Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Seiko and (yes) Steinhart watches. And i have owned numerous other watches that i have flipped over time. I have owned a whole bunch of different watches, different brands through the years. So i think i know a little bit what i am talking about. Just my two cents.
Thanks for watching Ajax, it's always good to hear someone about someone else's experience with the watch, especially when they have a lot of experience with other brands like yourself. I've had a lot of people ask if it's much better than Steinhart, and even suggest that the Ginault isn't much better. I've only reviewed/handled one Steinhart but in my experience while the Steinhart is nice this Ginault is head and shoulders above it in quality. What was your take on that?
I have the Steinhart OVM mk1 and although i love the watch, it is really no comparison to the Ginault. The Ginault is really an "almost" high end watch for a moderate price. It gives much more feel of highend than any other watch in that price category. Steinhart then; The case, crystal and dial of the Steinhart is really great. The bracelet is comfortable and good enough. The clasp is also good enough. People criticize Steinhart's bracelet and clasp but it is way better than Rolex's from let's say 10 / 15 years ago. So it is good enough for me. The ETA 2824-2 elabore movement in my Steinhart is nothing less than impressive! Very accurate. Only minor point is the point where the endlink meets the bracelet. There is a little "gap". But I would say that in the price range of let's say € 400,00 there not a whole lot of watches of better quality / finish / movement than a Steinhart. Especially the diver's. When i see aperson wearing a Steinhart, i know that person is a watch enthusiast. Not everyone has the cash to spend on a Rolex / Omega or what have you. A Steinhart is a perfect piece for such a person. Perfect! I love my Steinhart and it sits proud next to my other timepieces in my watchbox.
The $7k extra you pay for the sub is because it says Rolex on the dial. Back in the 60s a Submariner was $100. Adjusted for inflation that's less than $1,500. It's a pure luxury status symbol now and price adjusted accordingly. I'm really shocked that such a huge percentage of "watch nerd" type people are so head over heels for Rolex.
Your logic is flawed. That $1500 adjusted for inflation watch isn’t the same watch Rolex makes today. In terms of quality and technology that’s like comparing a car from the 1960s to a modern super car. There is no comparison.
@@JustBlueFish looooooooool even en 1994 a rolex was at 2500 rolex is very good of course but this value is a 3000 euros max for the quality not 10k (and 3000 really max)
So good that the Ginault is a very viable alternative to the Rolex. 90% of the quality for 10% of the cost. He’s providing an excellent product that Rolex should themselves make but don’t. God bless him for going legit.
@@llai8501 If you take the name off of the dial, the Rolex is just an OK watch honestly. I've handled a ton of them, and they are nice, but they are $2,000 nice at most.
A used Rolex with no glide lock is still 800% more expensive than the Ginault. I’m never spending $10k on a watch….that’s getting me halfway to a solid driver 65-68 Mustang coupe. $1200? I could spend that…….which is where the Ginault comes in.
I respect the heck out of the Ginault’s dedication to quality, and I completely understand anyone’s decision to buy one. However, the prospect of spending so much on a homage watch just feels wrong to me. At the end of the day, it’ll always be a wannabe Submariner. You’re better off saving up a bit more for a Tudor Black Bay. It looks similar to the Submariner, but at least has the dignity of being its own unique design. And hey, it’s even a direct relative of the Sub!
The Tudor BB is a great watch. At the discounted price of $1200 that puts the BB about 3x more expensive than the Ginault though, so I wouldn't say it's saving just a bit more. That said of course it's probably worth it, but for a lot of people that's going to be outside of their comfort zone in terms of spending.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Good point; I didn’t realize the Tudor was that much more expensive. Great job on the vid btw; your reviews and comparisons are always a pleasure to watch!
Genault will offer a discount, or they used to. At 1/8th the cost and 80% the quality, it’s the clear winner. I’d also classify the Tudor bb as a sub wannabe. Cjh
I don't know what people find attractive about the Black Bay; such an ugly watch, just like the raved about seiko monster. Both are watches that are always recommended without a second thought, but I don't find them appealing, so not an option.
You didn't talk about christal as well...
Very nice review, I have a Rolex 16600 and a 16613. The genault is very well done. I plan to pick one up as well.
Btw the 16613 also has a gold colored background on the date wheel. They went to a white background around 2007.
I agrie 100% with Alex Yoon abut the megnefecation in tha date! Withe out quality megnefecation and AR coting It's very disterbing to read the date.
Why "america" and not just say "USA"?
I really enjoyed your honesty, and knowledge. Well done. 👍🏽
I have the Ginault myself and honestly I wouldn’t change it for a Rolex. I have had it for 1 year now, and still like the Ginault a lot
Thanks for watching and glad to hear the Ginault is still going strong for a year.
What about trade?
Good luck.
@@chrispauls6759 Thanks for the info appreciate it.
Who can afford to pay bills when there's so many watches to buy!
7:33 The brushed finish on the case is consistent with the previous 16610 generation Rolex Sub.
Amazing, both watches were perfectly synchronized.
I think they were off by a hair, but I tried.
If that’s not an endorsement for the Ginault I don’t know what is. Thanks for watching buddy.
Good choice on that no-date Ginault, it's a great watch.
Great video as usual. And for most people, they might be more likely to use it outdoors/salt water environments when the Rolex might be at home in the safe...
Good review. The Ginault being half the quality of a Rolex Sub and 1/8the price? That makes the Ginault a SERIOUS WINNER in my opinion.
Yeah it is pretty great. If a person likes the style of the watch, it's good value.
Hyundai has also more than half the quality of Mercedes at a much lower price, but that doesnt make it a winner and everyone still wants the Mercedes.
Ron Power in a car analogy it makes perfect sense. But to use Hyundai and Mercedes to Ginault and Rolex? Not so much.
So close in quality for the price. If they would put a sapphire bezel or ceramic I would have purchased it already.
Ron Power
Oh shut up...
Thanks for your “time”. Enjoyed learning all the minutiae. I’m a sucker for detail.
Thanks Guy. 👍.
Thanks for watching and very well put perspective on the historical importance of the mil-sub and how it ties into this watch.
What an outstanding comparison between these two watches; thank you for putting it together. I have an Ocean Rover myself and I took a look at my bracelet; I don't have the grittiness that yours does. Mine is very loose and articulates very nicely.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with the Ginault Jon.
I'd be curious to know Ginaults thoughts about making improvements to the watch based on this review. For me, a ceramic or sapphire glass bezel and improved bracelet/clasp would seal the deal.
I don’t know if they’re planning any updates or modifications to the watch, but I bet you could email them and ask.
I really wish you had compared the OR1 with an actual 5 digit sub. The quality looks much more on par to Rolex’s older models.
You should have done this with a 5digit rolex
In truth it would have been ideal to have both the 5 and 6 digit Rolex on hand, since this Ginault shares designs from both.
Thanks for watching trevor. Good to hear your OR is still working well after a year of use.
I wish you could have put those 2 movements on a timegrapher to see what results you find.
Your brilliant, candid, opening comments about diminishing returns, earned you my respect and a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.
I understand it will be impossible to keep the polished center links perfect, but they sure look great at this point!
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Very fair comparison Guy. I like the way you synchronise the times of the compared watches.
Thanks Greg I appreciate it.
The Ginault has a much nicer case
I like both styles, but if forced to pick I prefer the super-case on the new Rolex models.
In terms of value for money it's hard to beat this Ginault. It's a very well put together watch.
I think that you have represented both watches perfectly.
Thanks for watching.
I have a OR1. It’s keeps +1 a day for the last 2 years. I also own a 16140 submariner. I have to say. It’s close. Really close.
Thanks Brian I appreciate the feedback. Keep that Ginault in rotation. It’s a top notch watch.
@Me La Pelan exactly that’s why my Rolex tool watches are scratched to hell ..
@this level of craftsmanship of the Ginault I would rather prefer to see their own designs rather than imitating other people’s!
Like Rolex copied the Fifty Fathoms all those years ago?
will you be able to review the OR 2 that does have a ceramic insert?
I’d like to, but I don’t know. I haven’t heard from the people from Ginault.
lol I love how you are critical with the rolex. you're like the only reviewer who does that.
Every Rolex I've had has had some issues. They are no where near perfect, and for the price they should be nearly perfect.
The Rolex counterfeiter makes a better Rolex than Rolex
Brian Yee idiot
Obviously it's easier to compare when you have both things you're comparing and you're not going from memory. And obviously the ORII 4 years later is even closer than the OR 1. And that isn't even accounting for the Silent Service. That said, the very fine comparisons you are making here are an awful slight thing to hang $9K on, and that is at the unattainable retail price. It's awfully difficult to justify the higher money unless you REALLY want to. That is how I think of it. I'll note that my ORII glide lock is a little smoother than that, maybe still not the equal of Rolex but way better than one I had on a Parnis.
This new model is cool but I think I’ll wait for a nice preowned example at $900. Ginaults seem to depreciate there pretty consistently
I haven't looked at too closely at how they do on the resale market, but if you can find one for that price that would be a strong value.
I seen couple about that price already might get on it
Have you ever put the Ginault on your Timegrapher? I'd like to see what that looks like as it is supposed to be a chronometer and that should show up on the Timegrapher. Thanks for the review.
I did when I got it. Ran within specs.
@@JustBlueFish Nice to hear, thanks.
I've had an OR1 for several years, and it's an outstanding watch.
Excellent review. (Nb I bought the no date ginault at the outset with considerably discounted price,
with black bezel and where the red 2nd hand works rather better in my view)
Yeah I think the red seconds hand would look great on a black on black model.
Talk to other Ginault owners, including myself. I will never sell my Ocean Rover. Rolex messed up with the wider case lugs and
they do not offer the sand lume or the Mil-spec hour hand like the Ocean Rover.
Outstanding review, which takes time - 43:15 in fact. Thank you!
Thanks!
Does anyone know how to get a hold of Ginault for a warranty issue?
service@ginault.com
I have both the Sub and the new OR II. The OR is an excellent watch. The sub is sublime. but hey, not a million miles apart. Very good value
Thanks!
Sure I’d be happy to. Let me know via email, when you’d like to send it over for review.
Thanks for watching.
WAY more QC issues on the Tissell than there are on the Ginault.
Superb analysis justbluefishGuy!
Thanks.
Great review. It would have been interesting to see a 5 digit reference sub next to the Ginault.
Nail on the head with your comments of the bezel insert on the Ginault...
Question to ask you this Ginault ocean rover or Seiko Marine master? I want to purchase one of them. Which one?
Which Marine Master, the SBDX017? That watch was discontinued a while ago so it's gonna be harder to find. It's also much more expensive, even when it was in production. Aside from that they are very different watches. The Seiko is a 44mm watch that is 14.5mm thick. The Ginault is much smaller, which may be good or bad depending on your perspective. I haven't spent any real time with the Marine Master so it wouldn't be fair of me to say which one is better than the other, but I would expect that for the price the Seiko should be a higher quality watch.
Seiko Men's 'Prospex' Japanese Automatic Stainless Steel Diving Watch, Color:Silver-Toned (Model: SBDX017)
I found a place to buy one the japanese version for 1900 dollars brand new.
ok thanks
Great video! This is just what I was looking for. Thanks!
Most people's thought process: "The Rolex is the significantly more expensive watch, so it must be better in every category just because..., and therefore the winner. The Ginualt does something different from rolex, and because the Ginault is cheaper, it must be the less impressive design."
*However, to me, the ceramic bezel and AR cyclops alone are worth the extra 7 grand. If ginault did those, then I might consider them.
I talked to John at Ginault about the AR cyclops. They said they were looking into it but at this time it would add about $200 in cost to the watch to make that small change. I don't know if they will offer a model with it in the future or not.
Have the Ginault's water ratings been tested?
I sssume someone has.
you should have compared the Ginaut VS the sub 16610 not the subc 116610
I did in another video.
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it. I’m not familiar with Orange Watch Company, I’ll look them up.
Like I stated above, not everyone is into ceramic yet. Breitling has just gotten into the game. I've had many ceramic watches and there are trade off's. Ceramics don't fade and can be beautiful to look at with their high gloss, yet they shatter easily and do scratch. Aluminum bezel, as in many classic Rolex GMT's, age in a way that makes them classics and desirable, even though they may be prone to scratching. jr
Thanks for the review. Would you take this over a Oris Aquis?
I am a big fan of Oris; I have a F1 which I will never be rid of- but in this particular case, I vote Ginault.
mrfuriouser Thank you.
Make the jump... you won't be disappointed👍
I think a bit more than $1k+ above the Ginault, and I've had them both.
Great video, as always.. Got my replacement Steinhart Titanium 500 GMT Premium in finally - GMT hand working well - will send it along soon!
Thanks buddy, glad you liked the review. How are you finding the Steinhart is working out for you? Pretty happy with it?
Oh I haven’t reviewed Monta yet, but hopefully I will get a chance in the future.
Does the Sub have the glide lock? I couldn't live without it now that I have it. I use it a couple times of day. I also love the gold sand and red combo.
Yeah the Submariner has a glide lock clasp.
How about reviewing the OR2 black bezel cyclobs with your Sub. Seems like they are even more similar.
Ironically, it would be more likely that the Rolex clasp gets accidentally hooked open by, say, a stray thread, while this wouldn't be an issue for the Ginault! :)
haha I guess that's true.
@@JustBlueFish ;-)
Yeah but... are the 9’s the same? No 9 is better than a Rolex 9. Seriously, fantastic review. I wish Ginault would do away with the red seconds hand as well.
Do you mean the 9's on the date wheel? Since today is the 9th and they're both sitting here in front of me, I can say yes they look pretty much the same. Thanks for watching Tyler.
I have my eye on a Monta Oceanking, wondering how it stacks up to the Rolex.
Are those available yet?
They are on pre-order now and should be delivered in August.
They look pretty cool. I'd love to check one out. eMail Monta and let them know you'd like to see me review one and maybe they'll send me a sample watch to borrow?
I want one of this skyquest
17:15 why they don't use a matte finish on the ceramic bezel at Rolex is a mystery to me. Maybe it's just not possible, I wouldn't know. On the other hand, the platinum-filled markings are a real winner with the Sub. Other than that, the older style aluminum bezel has more charm.
Excellent review, that Ginault is a lot better quality then i was expecting but would i spend the money on it? probably not, if you really want a Sub you get a Rolex Sub.
Can you use the ginault as a dress watch
You can do whatever you want. That’s the beauty of having free will.
I consider 904L an inferior metal compared to 316L for a daily wear watch.
Why is that? I really can’t tell the difference. (I’m genuinely interested to know why you say that, I’m not being facetious)
@@RustyLongPipe It scratches much more easily than 316 in my experience. I
I have a rolex Air King 34 MM, the clasp on the Ginault is better than my Rolex. OK I am sold on this watch, sorry Tudor this is $2000 less than a black bay. I have my rolley I guess I will call this my Ginnie
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Who else is here July 2019 following the “TC” Report??
Me =)
Yes. TC def made the best quality copies. That's for sure.
Only people without lives who aspired to be hall monitors in Jr High cared about that report for more than about 15 minutes…..
Great job Guy...well done.
Thanks Chris, I appreciate it.
The brush pattern on lugs and width are 5513.
Its a wrap, well done, your reviews are a pleasure to....watch:-). really consider getting a Ginault, it seems to be good bang per buck. Have a nice weekend.
Thanks WoT:J I appreciate that. It’s definitely a good value, if you get one I think you’ll like it.
Ill look into it, seems they do a bit of discount often.
I dont get it .Can see the point of a $20 sub knock off but of you can make a watch that good make your own .
It is possible and likely the reviewer profited.
ruclips.net/video/R8JBeY2YwUw/видео.html
They do offer a discount but they ask for an honest review. The reviewer would have no reason to lie either way
Please review Ocean Rover 2 my friend. Look forward to your take
If we could see the inside of both watches you would see a world of difference
Definitely. The movement is a hard piece of the puzzle to quantify. While I know the 3135 is “better” buy what degree and the amount of value it adds is difficult to say since I have real technical training. I’m sure there is no comparison though.
Hmmm.. Binge watching older (and newer) watch videos and having a couple of beers. Life is good in quarantine.
Pretty much want to off myself.
Didnt Rolex rename 904L steel to Oyster Steel?
I’ve seen them use that term but I don’t know if it’s officially renamed
But i wished it had a steel or white seconds hand. That's it
Thanks for watching Ajax, it's always good to hear someone about someone else's experience with the watch, especially when they have a lot of experience with other brands like yourself.
Steinhart then;
The case, crystal and dial of the Steinhart is really great.
@@JustBlueFish looooooooool
even en 1994 a rolex was at 2500
rolex is very good of course but this value is a 3000 euros max for the quality not 10k (and 3000 really max)
Такие крутые часы👍 спасибо за сравнение!
The Ginault is awesome, it's a shame that both had to write the complete bible on the dial.
Haha, yeah there’s a lot of text.
Ginault. They sure know how to make counterfeit Rolex watches. Tsung Chi is a genius.
and NTH ^^
Any idea where I can buy one of his ROlex replica's?
So good that the Ginault is a very viable alternative to the Rolex. 90% of the quality for 10% of the cost. He’s providing an excellent product that Rolex should themselves make but don’t. God bless him for going legit.
The Ginault is much nicer than the Rolex.
Bold statement.
For cheapskates it is.
@@llai8501 If you take the name off of the dial, the Rolex is just an OK watch honestly. I've handled a ton of them, and they are nice, but they are $2,000 nice at most.
because you have ginault not rolex.
Excellent review. Love that Rolex Sub.. The Ginault is nice but i'd go for a used Rolex before purchasing a OR
A used Rolex with no glide lock is still 800% more expensive than the Ginault. I’m never spending $10k on a watch….that’s getting me halfway to a solid driver 65-68 Mustang coupe. $1200? I could spend that…….which is where the Ginault comes in.
@@Jedi391 not everyone can spend that kind of money on a timepiece but some can
@@pdg61met and many (like me) could but never would. Of course many also spend the money who really shouldn’t.
Doesn’t the five digit sbubmariner have an aluminum bezel?
I just came across an article about Rolex using sub contractors for their Cases Could this be true?
Thanks Trevor.
Both are watches that are always recommended without a second thought, but I don't find them appealing, so not an option.
you should have compared the 16610 to the ginault.
I have, in another video.
