From one of my fav albums. Tigerlily. I am sappy so this music appeals to me. A story in the song that many of us can relate to.

Your analysis sounds spot on. The song speaks the words that unrequited lovers would speak if they were being true to themselves. But often they get defensive and put on an outer appearance of being mad at their ex. When the truth is their extreme bitterness, which comes out in the second verse, is due to the extreme pleasure their love once brought them.

Sweet. "The Letter" is from Natalie Merchant's debut album, Tigerlily, released in 1995. It was my favorite album that year, but that year was also the year my mother died. So it's a difficult listen for me now, despite the passage of three decades of time. Two more stand out tracks from that album to also check out are "Carnival" and "Jealousy".
