Hey guys! For more information about why culling is important and how goldfish breeders cull their fry, please read my blog post here ► solidgoldaquatics.com/2014/12/11/my-thoughts-on-culling/ And don't forget to check the description section above for more details and links! ;)
Solid Gold Aquatics I have watched your videos for about a year now, and I love your work! But I have a question for you. I want to buy either a oranda or ranchu but I can't get a giant tank. Would I be able to buy just one oranda and put it in a 20, or will I have to get 2 and a 40 gallon. I can't remember if they are social fish or not! Thanks!
Rayzo Rayzo most definitely, it is a well known practice for many types of fish (I believe some breeders even cull discus for example). At the end of the day, it is your choice and money and no one and persuade you to do other wise, but if you plan to sell your guppies, please don't sell a deformed guppy to someone who can't tend to their special needs.
I bought a fish that had a obvious tail flip defect at a pet store knowing I wont be able to breed it ,but idk I still have it and love it like any of my other fish.
oh thanks for the heart. I was just saying that cause of all the research I have done on wild animals. the fish go threw a cycle. the unhealthy baby fish die off from starvation and all get eaten when they are older. really miss having those black fish. sorry not good with breed names. might be getting some in the future.
Keeping goldfish has to be hard. I'm too emotionally weak to euthanize fry. I know it's for their own good but I'm not a serious breeder so I wouldn't be able to handle this.
if i were you, you want to keep fish, then i'd say get some common pond hardy types, like yellow gold fish, shubunkins common gold fish (the signal tail hardy types) and keep an outdoor pond. do your best to keep big predictors away (cats birds and the likes) but leave things like pond wildlife, newts and such alone. do your best to keep the pond at optimum levels like you would an aquarium, then if they do spawn nature will do the culling, nature is very pro at culling as normally only the fittest will make it, unless you get one like i did who is quick and clever but now has problems with her swim bladder because of a bent spine. its only now she's got a lot old the problems are getting more and more frequent and i'm lucky enough to have a fish vet. but i dare not let her breed in case i end up with a pond full of fish with bent spins ALL needing medical care in later or early life, its so much kinder to end it for them before it gets emotionally draining on you and bad with suffering for them.
Well now I know why my black Moor Goldfish has an up bent tail. I thought it might have been broken but he swims just fine. Now I know he's probably just deformed and should have been culled but never was. Thank you so much for making this video. I'm going to keep my fish though. I still like him. lol
They are adorable! Its crazy how fast they grow vs my baby betta fry. I've tried to address culling fry (as a first time bettta breeder)..but I can't seem to get people to understand that its a necessary part of breeding. Some people still get upset... or mad..or ask me if I can give them the deformed fry. Their intentions are kind..but sometimes the kindest thing is to humanely euthanize fish that would not have a good quality of life.
Culling for deformities is entirely moral. Culling for preference and creating a strain is a moral grey area that everybody is entitled to have their own opinion on. I feel like in the case of fancy goldfish, the area is extra grey since fancy goldfish varieties have shortened lifespans, suffer from health issues and have extremely limited movement compared to single tailed varieties. I'm by no means judging or even stating my own preference, i'm just highlighting how and why people might feel the way they feel. No one side of the argument is absolutely right. Each to their own, live and let live.
Firstly, the passion or the fact of being a true breeder of fish lies within a few personalities only! Solid gold(jenny) is one of them no doubt. Jenny shares her experiences and all her hardships too as a breeder and motivates the rest! As solid gold also has shaped my mind being a breeder of fish. Thank you jenny! 100k subscribers, I am just waiting for this to happen!
For those of you who haven't been doing their research (i.e. her blog post), culling usually entails that the babies are not fit for growing out, selling, etc. so breeders will either euthanize the fish, or the culled fry are separated and eventually given away or sold at a lower price. She also states in the video that she uses clove oil for culling. Clove oil is a sedative substance to many fish and a high enough dosage (which isn't a lot) will humanely euthanize fish.
Such good in depth information. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. Culling is important and sadly necessary. How often do you do your water changes?
In regards to fancy goldfish being purposely bred to have desirable "deformities" by bringing out recessive genes, I wonder whether or not this aspect of goldfish breeding is any better for the fish than something like a crooked spine or tail. I would like to see more healthy discussion about this issue, and what we can do to make sure our fish are being well cared for in light of the reality of fancy goldfish breeding. We have to remember that these fish may not be entirely healthy to begin with, which raises further questions about the uncomfortableness of "culling" young fry...
One day you should put all your clips into one video and do and in depth video on how to raise fry for beginners!!! Including like tank size and feeding amounts etc
You need more recognition. Everything you do is much more amazing than some of the other channels involving animals, in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
loved seeing how you weed out the goldfish, I have been keeping goldfish since I was 16 and I'm now 26 and thanks to you and a few other RUclipsrs I'm more successful and more confident and enjoy my hobby even more. one day I would like to drop some money on a really nice oranda...but until then I'm happy...well I want a thrid tank.... lol
Ive been a fish keeper of, um, ugh...35 years. Jenni inspired me to jump start my goldfish keeping again. I'm working on more tanks, tubs and hopeful that I can do this full-time as a hobby within a year and quit my career😆
I've had a couple of goldfish spawns and culling is always so hard for me, I tend to only pick the ones that are having trouble getting around or are sick. I know it's a needed part but it doesn't make it easier!
creativepetkeeping was just talking about culling. It's interesting to hear the different emotional perspectives between a more seasoned breeder vs a first-timer. I think it's great that you're speaking about it because it IS such an important part of being a responsible breeder. Not to mention the humane way you're treating the culled ones, which I think watchers need to understand is a far more graceful way than any other methods.
very cool i was in the biz for over 30 yrs im glad to see you are doing this it makes us old timers feel like the trade is not lost good for you im sure your parents are proud of you .yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
My female ribbon fin guppy gave birth to 60 fry and half was crooked backs. Hurts to cull them, but I had to do it. Maybe my mis-handle, maybe bad genetic, and maybe jaming 60 fully form living fry in a tiny fish is the reason for the crooked back, but all the same, you have to cull. Crooked back will make more crooked backs. -side note, my females that gives birth to 20-45 fry are rarely crooked if any at all, so numbers maybe. But, cull, cull, and hopefully just a little more cull.
Lían E. Guppies need culling just the same. You'll get bent spines in a few. You can raise these up of course but you probably won't want them breeding...
***** my point about inbreeding was to not let it happen if you're not trying to change the animal. I understand it has to happen to get other breeds/varieties.
after how many days these fry will show their original colour,,,,whether they are gold or black or silver etc? nd what you will do with those defective fry?
I have about 11 fry in a net breeder thing but recently one of my fish came down with fin rot. I took that fish out but can I still treat the tank with the babies in it?
this was a great learning video. i started my fish keeping with two red cap, but unfortunate story is that, i couldn't retain them for long due to lack of my expertise in this hobby. but gradually over a year i learned lot from different youtube channels. and after watching your videos i again found my interest to keep goldfish. recently i have setup a small tank with two goldfish in it. they r growing fine now. thanks for producing such informative and nice video. keep it up
I have a question I have a 50 gallon tank with three goldfish in it I was wondering if I will be able to put a angelfish in with them and I'm also getting some more goldfish to put in so all together the goldfish will be 7
Mam.. Plz suggest u r using a lot of brin srimp with salt water by using all this salted water every day u dont face any problem? Can i have to change water every day or what i shoul do
Since your fish room isn't temperature controlled what on average is the temperature during daylight hours in there? I watched your other video on your current plans to rebuild and control temperature in the fish room. Have you ever thought of building a pond? I have read the pond environment allows for a longer lifespan and larger size growth.
hey I have a big pond in mu garden and the goldfish naturally breed each year and we get babies, we have had one appear from a few years ago with big black googly eyes like some of the fish you have is that from our gold fish or has someone thrown it in my pond?
Just wondering if someone might know I bought a Blackmoor yesterday from my small town fish shop and it wasn't until I got home that I noticed it only has a single tail. All the other ones in the tanks there had the double tails, is this just a deformity? He swims around perfectly fine and is super fast!
Aren't brine shrimp raised in salt water? So did you just add the salty water from the brine shrimp hatchery straight into your tank or did you somehow rinse off the brine shrimp off camera?

Solid Gold Aquatics Hey I Love Goldfish I have 2 big ones and 2 medium sized ones

Solid Gold Aquatics hi I like your videos a lot. Thanks for uploading!! hope you reach 100000 soon!!!!
I bought a fish that had a obvious tail flip defect at a pet store knowing I wont be able to breed it ,but idk I still have it and love it like any of my other fish.
idk 2 Absolutely. Allow them to live their full life.
well if you take into account all the fish that survive in the wild. you are actually doing what nature does.
oh thanks for the heart. I was just saying that cause of all the research I have done on wild animals. the fish go threw a cycle. the unhealthy baby fish die off from starvation and all get eaten when they are older. really miss having those black fish. sorry not good with breed names. might be getting some in the future.
Moors really cool goldfish
Lenny Velez oh, i need to be culled?
Comment Gold wait what
Oli Robinson the difference is these fish are not in nature they're being hand raised therefore she has a chance to save them all.
Keeping goldfish has to be hard. I'm too emotionally weak to euthanize fry. I know it's for their own good but I'm not a serious breeder so I wouldn't be able to handle this.
oscar tank
Ron Smith yea them oscar fish get big
I mean it's a little bit of not necessary I mean just but the crippled ones in a tank with the other messed up ones

Same!

I'm going to keep my fish though. I still like him. lol
Will Morris my black moor also has a crooked tail :(( but he's doing pretty well considering it
Bob .E same haha it's a green tetra tho and has survived quite welll
Mine too
They are adorable! Its crazy how fast they grow vs my baby betta fry.

So true! It's a hard thing to get people to understand.
Creative Pet Keeping your most current fish fan Friday really helped me to understand why culling is so important! Thank you for that
Creative Pet Keeping OMG BOTH MY FAV ANIMAL PPL TALKING TO EACH OTHER!!!!! LIFE HAS BLESSED ME

You should put some of your brine shrimp under your microscope!!!
Nikolai Nelson She should. I've been searching RUclips for brine shrimp development but see none.
i would love to see brine shrimp under microscope too!
yesss
Such good in depth information. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. Culling is important and sadly necessary. How often do you do your water changes?
Lifewithpets I'd like to disagree culling is extremely unceccessary, just release them into a local pond
Leo's Channel so they die in the pond?
Leo's Channel do you realize the damage you are causing to the environment let alone it's illegal to release goldfish as they are not a native species
Leo's Channel noo dont release them they could devastate the ecosystems in that pond but if that pond already have goldfishes in it then its ok:)
Your cute little goldfish can exterminate your local wild fishes
I'm glad you're putting in the effort to breed healthy goldfish. I would love to see a video on culling.

I can't wait for 2 more weeks for the next update of these guys hehehe :) so cool watching them grow :)
One day you should put all your clips into one video and do and in depth video on how to raise fry for beginners!!! Including like tank size and feeding amounts etc
you can use a neodymium magnet to pick up the brine shrimp shells
You need more recognition. Everything you do is much more amazing than some of the other channels involving animals, in my opinion. Keep up the good work!

Alot of good things i see on your videos about taking care of your goldfish fry
I've had a couple of goldfish spawns and culling is always so hard for me, I tend to only pick the ones that are having trouble getting around or are sick. I know it's a needed part but it doesn't make it easier!

They're already so beautiful! I can't wait for their color to begin to develop within the next few weeks!
So jenn a quick question? Where do the bad fish go? Do you keep them or uthanize them???
very cool i was in the biz for over 30 yrs im glad to see you are doing this it makes us old timers feel like the trade is not lost good for you im sure your parents are proud of you .yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
What will you do with the special fish?xx
Any tips on 2 inch black moors? I want some but I have never kept those types.
Like your videos, but why do you cull the goldfish, i mean , what do you do with them?
hi i love ur fry , can u tell me how did u save the eggs , did u use any mob and separated them ?
are you really keeping all of the fry
or are you selling them
I have a question. Can baby goldfish eat crushed regular flake food?
I have a question. With all the culls do you keep them in a separate tank so they live their lives till the end or do you put them down
do guppy fry need to be culled (depending on how many are spawned)?
What is that thing call that keep producing bubbles?
At first I was against culling... but after listening I think I understand why. Thank you for explaining.
I have a question do you allow people to send gifts or just what is your thoughts on that
Is the first time I can see goldfish babies. Nice job.
hey!!Excuse me I've a question please? Do u know how to increase the gold fish?
How many times did you fed those tiny cuties in one day?
Where did you get the brine shrimp hatchery set up from? Awesome taps.
Do you put the brine shrimp in without rinsing out the salt. I just got my first fry of gold fish and was wondering what's best they are 4 days old
My female ribbon fin guppy gave birth to 60 fry and half was crooked backs.
This looks like a full time job!! You are very experienced! Wow 4 weeks they change a lot.
Omg I've been such a fangirl ever since I found your channel! I'm even more excited that you're super close to 100,000 goldie's!
Do the ones that don't make the cut get fed to other bigger fish??
Are the fry ready yet?
I know culling is a necessary and important part of breeding, but it's sad to think about sometimes :(
Its super hard to do.. I"m struggling with culling my fry as a first time breeder..but I know its for the best..
Lían E. True, but you gotta be careful and be sure they don't inbreed. It's easy to miss it since they're livebearers
Lían E. Guppies need culling just the same. You'll get bent spines in a few. You can raise these up of course but you probably won't want them breeding...
***** my point about inbreeding was to not let it happen if you're not trying to change the animal. I understand it has to happen to get other breeds/varieties.
yup and we reaaaaaally reaaaaaaaaaally need to start doing it in humans
Hi , are you change the water every day and what is the quantity of water changed ? Regards
thank you very much , but what about ammonia is increase with out change water ?
What are your plans for the goldfish that you are raising up?

jenni do you have any ich solution for gold fish? which is recover them totally?
Hi there. I started a quarantine tank and I have a product to get rid of chlorine, but where do you get your dechlorinated water? Thank you
Congratz on 100k! So awesome to see creators in this hobby hitting that astronomical milestone!
What type are these? I got a mystery fish the other day and it looks just like them.

after how many days these fry will show their original colour,,,,whether they are gold or black or silver etc?
nd what you will do with those defective fry?
I have planned on hatching bribe shrimp for my betta, Apolo, however which set up are you using ?
Did u give food at 1st day Of hatch?
What happens after you decide to cull them? Like how do you uh... get rid of them?
I have about 11 fry in a net breeder thing but recently one of my fish came down with fin rot. I took that fish out but can I still treat the tank with the babies in it?
So wait what do you do with the ones your not keeping?
this was a great learning video. i started my fish keeping with two red cap, but unfortunate story is that, i couldn't retain them for long due to lack of my expertise in this hobby. but gradually over a year i learned lot from different youtube channels. and after watching your videos i again found my interest to keep goldfish. recently i have setup a small tank with two goldfish in it. they r growing fine now. thanks for producing such informative and nice video. keep it up
I have a question I have a 50 gallon tank with three goldfish in it I was wondering if I will be able to put a angelfish in with them and I'm also getting some more goldfish to put in so all together the goldfish will be 7
Hey Jennifer my fry is not moving
When I touch them they start swimming is that normal?
Why do you a the brine shrimp water in the tank and not met them first. Thanks Andy
Some people rinse the baby brine shrimp before adding it to the fry tank, but I have not found it necessary.
What do you with the cullings?
Where do you put the culls?????!!!!!!!
What are you doing with the other fish?
Thank you so much for breeding responsibly! I bred bettas and a lot of people don't understand why we cull
Where did you buy your brine shrimp hatchery?
Mam.. Plz suggest u r using a lot of brin srimp with salt water by using all this salted water every day u dont face any problem? Can i have to change water every day or what i shoul do
wat is a cull? do u do that wit every fish?
Since your fish room isn't temperature controlled what on average is the temperature during daylight hours in there? I watched your other video on your current plans to rebuild and control temperature in the fish room. Have you ever thought of building a pond? I have read the pond environment allows for a longer lifespan and larger size growth.
May I know what is the standard size of aquarium for goldfish
What happens to the culled fish just wondering do you keep them still like what do u do with the fish you don't wanna keep ?
amber DISASTER CHILDS their killed thats what culling means.
Can i feed fry crunched up flakes if i dont have brine shrimp
After 2.3 days, do we change the water and feed it several times a day?sis
hey I have a big pond in mu garden and the goldfish naturally breed each year and we get babies, we have had one appear from a few years ago with big black googly eyes like some of the fish you have is that from our gold fish or has someone thrown it in my pond?
Great video! Thank you very much! Where did you buy your brine shrimp hatchery? It's look so simple to use!
dear solid gold my fish has a bit of its tail missing. why is it like that and what should i do
You don’t rinse brine shrimp with freshwater?
Solid gold who many fish do you have
Hi Jenny, I remember seeing one of your vids where you just bought the Brine shrimp hatchery in this video. Where did you buy it again? THanks!
what do you do with the goldfish that are in the green bowl or have defects?
kaitlyn lykins She kills them.
I don't even like keeping fish but I like animals and I like this channel.
What do you do with the cull fish?

What do you do with the non healthy fish do you keep them until they die
Just wondering if someone might know I bought a Blackmoor yesterday from my small town fish shop and it wasn't until I got home that I noticed it only has a single tail. All the other ones in the tanks there had the double tails, is this just a deformity? He swims around perfectly fine and is super fast!
YAY! 100,000 + subscribers! Congrats Jennifer! =)
You are INSANELY close to 100k subscribers!
@ Solid Gold where did you get your hatchery? my homemade one is crapping out would like to upgrade

They're really hard to find, but there's a link to a similar one in the description section of the video. :)

what do u do whith the ones that are culled
What do u do with the culls?
What do u do with the callers?
What do you do with the fishes you're not gonna keep
Aren't brine shrimp raised in salt water? So did you just add the salty water from the brine shrimp hatchery straight into your tank or did you somehow rinse off the brine shrimp off camera?
The little amount of salt doesn't affect the tank
