I usually just tie them in a knot. I'm not sure about the embroidery thread but I've bought bracelets similar to these but they are made out of something different, almost looks like twine but much softer. I'd tie it in a knot and once it gets wet it swells up a bit and holds really well. They always break before the knot gives out. But like I said, I'm not entirely sure about the embroidery thread.
