"The Witches' Graveyard" - Stamps Cemetery in Tennessee | Walking Old Graveyards

  • In this video, we walk around historic Stamps Cemetery in Putnam County Tennessee. Pentagrams -- or stars -- on some of the old headstones have given this place a reputation as a witches' graveyard. Historians believe the star may have been Mr. Stamp's signature because he was illiterate and preferred not to sign documents with an X.
    Regardless, it appears the cemetery may be home to some ritualistic activity.

    NOTE: This channel was intentionally created to host videos WITHOUT narration. The concept is to offer point-of-view videos to let you feel as though you're walking around an old graveyard, to include the sounds of the location. I appreciate the comments requesting narration, but there will never be any narration on this channel.

    The OCD side of me wants to tidy up those grave stones by straightening the head stones and restoring the wonky pitched spirit stones (the two long stones covering the grave) to original placement carefully. Though I would not want to clean the actual stonework as the lichen and moss gives it character. But in reality I couldn't and wouldn't start messing with stuff like that (unless safety issues or the family wishes to repair their plots) as sometimes messing with that type of aged weathered stone can cause more damage to already fragile stonework. I live in Scotland (born, bred and raised) and we have many gorgeous very old grave yards that I love to wonder around and admire.

    I'm in NC mountains, quite a few here also like that. They were peaked so they wouldn't cave in, in a way as to expose the bodies. At least those are the stories told here. Very interesting, thank you for sharing.

Or maybe when they started doin that an why? There r graves like this where my mama is buried so I’ve been curious bout them since I c so many at the cemetery when I visit my mamas grave. Mama is buried in a old cemetery an in the oldest section there r several graves that have the slabs like a tpee an my family & I have talked bout them an been curious as 2 when an why they done sum graves like this back in the day.

      @@christinashelton5957 I'm from where they originated and we've always called them tent graves. They were put on graves back in the 1800s mainly because the grave would eventually cave in without a vault.

We’ve also seen graves that r covered w/a slab of concrete flat across the grave. We assumed that those might b done that way same as the tent graves.

I was born an raised in Cookeville so it’s very interesting 4 me 2 find out where this is exactly. Why rocks penny's on stones

    • @thriftybins
      @thriftybins 9 месяцев назад

      Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited.
      Leaving a nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together.
      Leaving a dime means you served together in some capacity.
      Leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when they were killed.
      Many people leave stones on a loved one's grave or memorial to mark their visit. The symbol of the stone can bring comfort to family and friends, letting them know their loved one has been visited, grieved and prayed for by others, too.

      We had ancestors they killed in the late 1890-1900 because the town people thought they were . Them town killed the whole family first husband died then one night did the same to his wife and small children and burned the house down . :( wife use herbs and such to help heal instead of their medication so they thought she was a witch 😢.That’s what they did back in the old days and got by with it .
      I have been hurting more information about it would like to visit there grave if I can find them .
