Doc's liscence plate is kind of an Easter Egg too. It encompasses his model and debut year ('51 Hudson Hornet) and his later profession as a Doctor (MD)
Doc’s drifting lessons was based on a racing hornet that used small drift slides on turns to help keep speed on the tracks, which at the time were mostly dirt if not all. It’s what makes the character for me and is by far my favorite hidden detail. Modern drift literally wouldn’t exist without him.
@@marshycomics Keiichi is later that the technique of drifting itself. When racing a drift will always be slower than getting traction because when the cars speedo is showing over a hundred the car is under due to the spinning and breaking. Traction goes up in smoke if that floats your boat. (drifting is stupid and trashes the drive line!!) There will always be an idiot that pays admission and cheers the smoke !!🙄 An expensive engine and transmission sometimes blows not to mention clipping the wall and plastic body panels burning! Can we get an honourable mention to Harvey (voiced by Jeremy Clarkson). We didn't get to see the character in any movie but it was still pretty cool to hear him in lightning mcqueen's trailer.
19:13 Mcqueen "Never really learns": Gives up the piston cup, his dream, in order to help King finish his last race. helps the town of Radiator Springs by putting his racing headquarters there and putting it back on the map. Let's Cruz finish the race in Cars 3 even though it was his supposed last race. Edit: In my opinion, I love cars because of his growth, even though 2 is a bit chaotic and 3 is the average "Passing of the Torch".
When I played my first legit racing game, my car started spinning in Gran Turismo 6 and could only think of Doc’s “Turn right to go left” quote, and that’s how I understood counter-steering
Doc is 100% number 1. He perfectly embodies the old classic racer with grit and toughness. From the beginning of Nascar up through 1970. Its Junior Johnson, David Pearson, Ned Jarrett, Smokey Yunick, Herb Thomas, Tim and Bob Flock, Lee Petty, and Big Bill France all in one. The pioneers of the sport. Legends.
Fun Fact: In Cars 2, the scene where Lightning talks with Jeff Gorvette and Lewis Hamilton, Jeff Gorvette gets swapped out with another famous racing driver based on the region/dub. The car (in general) gets replaced by whatever vehicle the person voicing it is known for driving, though in most cases, it's a DTM looking touring car. Australia: V8 Supercars driver Mark "Frosty" Winterbottom Brazil: Claudia Leitte (exception to the racing driver rule, she's a singer) France: Raoul ÇaRoule (a different character seen in the movie that's supposed to be an expy of Sebastien Loeb) Germany: Four Time F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel Mexico: Four Time Rolex Sports Car Series Champion Memo Rojas Russia: First Russian F1 Driver Vitaly Petrov Spain: Two Time F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso Sweden: Two Time Swedish Touring Car Champion Jan Nilsson
Fun fact about the Nash Ambassador and Hudson Hornet, both companies came together to form AMC, and both of those car names were preserved during the merging, meaning you had both the AMC Ambassador and the AMC Hornet
Fun fact about that, when they recorded the first movie Paul Newman did a lot of outtakes and sometimes just sat and told stories and they’d keep the tape rolling. They ended up with nearly 30 hours of just Paul Newman talking which is how they got Doc’s lines for Cars 3.

3D animator/enthusiast here. Actually the first Pixar movie to use raytracing was Bug's Life (there's some scenes with water droplets: which had reflective passes). Animation software also supported raytraced shadows, but animators tended to avoid them because it would seriously increase rendering times. Now with faster computers, raytrace rendering includes reflective surfaces, shadows, translucence, and reflected colors. It is interesting how detailed Pixar will get with different worlds. I attended their Siggraph Ratatouille lecture: the rendering/shading department took so many photos of different foods to decide how realistic/stylized they'd make each dish.

Cars: Literally has car and racing people in the movie. Fast and Furious: Let’s just give celebrity cameos and actors like Ludacris The Rock Iggy Azalea etc....
Luda is a car guy, has been since before he was famous. He still owns his gold Acura Legend and still drives it. Also there are car people in the Fast and Furious series, they just aren't famous outside the car world...Toshi Hayama, the guy that opens the gate to the parking garage in Tokyo Drift, yea that guy owns stage 10 and started Apex'i in the US...
The reason it’s like that is because vin diesel forced them to let him direct the franchise. And vin is more of the action redic type, so he turned it into his vision not into ours. Unfortunately
What really impressed me is the amount of research that came into it. I would guess that "cartoon animators" and "car and race enthusiasts" don't exactly overlap incredibly and the fact this means they needed a TON of research into a hobby they mostly didn't share. It shows a tremendous amount of respect and love towards a completely different audience. Also this is why Cars 2 is such a letdown. They did a lot of research as well but the script was just abysmal and it drags this awesome franchise down.
The first cars movie is also the greatest sports movie. I live that Lightening McQueen very clearly is the champion, he wins the race despite not passing the finish line. He proves he is the greatest racer. But he also realizes there's more to life than simply winning, and thinks about someone besides himself. That whole ending it just the perfect ending on so many levels. And it teaches kids an important lesson as well. I really love it.

Bro this man put Doc's old friends over the Tuner cars like bruh what
Doc’s drifting lessons was based on a racing hornet that used small drift slides on turns to help keep speed on the tracks, which at the time were mostly dirt if not all. It’s what makes the character for me and is by far my favorite hidden detail. Modern drift literally wouldn’t exist without him.

I haven't watched Cars 3 yet (I need to) but the fact they kind of show this through Doc's old racing scenes is so great
When racing a drift will always be slower than getting traction because when the cars speedo is showing over a hundred the car is under due to the spinning and breaking.
“And that kids is how I became the worlds most mediocre driver.”

I attended their Siggraph
