Thank you Will! What an awesome idea. So creative and the looks of it are definitely eye catching. The intimacy you share with your viewers and honesty you approach with is humbling and I know there are so many here that feel the same way. Thank you for sharing this super secret tip for creative portraits and it even gives room for more creative ideas to flourish from that as well. Stoked to try it out!
I've seen literally hundreds of videos with 'creative tips' and this is one of the first that I actually like the look of. Well done Will, and thanks for sharing! When people ask about this technique when I'm using it I'll make sure to point back to you.
It's great to see what a young photographer does with some old technology. I remember an old time photographer showing me one of these sixty years ago! In today's style of shooting at f1.2 wide open one doesn't see much about depth of field anymore. Back in the early '50s my 4x5 Speed Graphic had an f4.5 lens that stopped down to f45. Back then, to take advantage of your depth of field you focused on a point that was 1/3 of the distance be tween you and the background of your scene. Thanks for your videos from on of your old time followers.
Peter so great to hear from you! I have so much respect for the people who did it before me so it’s great to have someone like you on the channel. Much respect!
Peter Hill - I don’t go back as far as you but learned that system for hyperfocal distance by a professional in 2007 or 2008 at a seminar in NY. I still use it as a retired guy with aperture stopped way down, and from friends I hear, “How did you do that?” As a mentor to our little club, I tell them.
Richard Bierman - Common knowledge? I knew a lot of people who had no idea about that and there are probably a lot others. Before I learned about the 1/3rd of the way to infinity method, I had read much about the mathematics and charts used to determine it. Sometimes we study too much. 😌
another tip for create portraits is use lomographys petval lenses. not quite the same - but nice if u like that kind of effect . available for nikon, canon and sony ( the newest version for the z-mount )
Great tip Will! I've seen you post pictures like these in other videos and I always wondered how you got that look. This is another great, simple, really effective tip that gives great results.Thank you again Will!
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs As you said Will, it adds a great look, like an aura, to portrait pictures. The two pictures you posted had a great looking effect to them, especially the picture of the bride. Great stuff Will, I will have to pick some of these up and try them out.
Nice! Hey man, many thanks. I'm intrigued! Interesting history in film making too! Love this kind of stuff......Amazon! Love using my Lensbabies...but this can fit easily in the pocket. Glad to see some thinking outside-the-box work with portraits. It's a calculated leap. Well done
Going to have to add this to my fun bag of toys haha! I have a credit card sized like... Gaussian blur card I found for $0.75 at a science store and I keep it in my wallet so I always have it and speeds up my workflow/sneaks some lights in if I want some haha! This is sick. I love little goodies like this.
Wow that's cool that's similar to the lensbaby kinda but much cheaper. I just bought a lens baby and going to buy one of these to, love the composition.
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Yes I been looking for things like this to change up my photography to be different but never knew what to look for? Who ever knew there was things like this! I sure didn't great information!!! I current getting involved with Infrared photography.
Great tip Will, thanks a lot! I updated the firmware on my Z6 yesterday. At this stage, I haven’t noticed any improvement of the autofocus. Let’s see if this is the case in the coming weeks.
New Firmware, any hidden focus improvement? Since you have multiple z6 I figure you are the best person to ask. Hope you get to talk about it when u get a chance.
Great tip, loving your channel dude, keep rocking it. Quick question / suggestion for a video: I would like to see your take on full frame / cropped discussion. I know of some ppl (me included) that want to go mirrorless and dont know if they should also change to ff (since theyre changing systems anyway) or Just stay on cropped or even wait if Nikon Will eventually release a d500 equivalent for the z-series. You're The only person out there that I see talking about The z series with an experience thats not Just a review or a Quick experience with The camera. You also been using The z50 and The Z6 a lot, so I think you May have a lot to add to that subject thats not The usual mumbo jumbo copy and paste about The subject. Keep doing The Nice work you're doing mate.
In principle that is like bifocal spectacles. I hope it's ok when i say i do not like the results very much. *BUT* i always enjoy out of the box thinking and creativity!! 👍 And no - never seen this form of usage before..
Not really convinced by the sample images. Looks like the same thing could be done with some grease on the lens or some basic tilt-shift. I was expecting some great shots with multiple people interacting and that crazy focus effect (front & back in focus). But great tip nonetheless. It would be a no brainer if found at thriftshop or on ebay. I'm occasionally looking into oldskool lens filters with optical effects. Although not to be overused, they are underrated. Most things are totally unique and you can't do it with Photohop - like this one.
That’s weird, the movie effect you were explaining looks so fake/unnatural it’s horrible! lol Thankfully your shots didn’t look anything like that. I’d probably prefer to do it in post to have more control but still a cool look.
In this video I share an accessory I use to get some seriously cool portrait effects. Hope this helps! - Will

You should focus a third way in for maximum DOF at any aperture, isn't that common knowledge.?

Get away! Next you'll tell me that the new generation of photographers have never heard of the Schiempflug principle!
Dude I’m on eBay now buying a bunch of these 😂😂 thanks for the tip!!!
Can you provide an Ebay link to us? Thanks...
Can you post a link on where to buy.and does Amazon carry something like this?
Hey Scot! I didn’t see much on amazon but if you type in “split field diopter” on eBay you should be all set!

Cool. Ordered a 67mm +2 off of eBay to use with the 85mm f/1.8 S on my Z7. Should be fun!

Hey Murphy,
So far no, but I’m still testing. I usually don’t like to give my reviews until I’ve had time to really understand the difference!
Omg Will, as tips go that has to go down as one of the best. Kudos to you for finding this and even more for sharing it, thank you 🙏
Of course!! Love sharing stuff with you guys
Citizen Kane...classic film. Good photography tip. Keep experimenting...that's the only way you learn.

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs looking forward to it.
Nice tip, Citizen Kane is from Orson Welles. Continue the good work.
Thanks my man, Orson wells was the actor/producer though. Cinematographer was Gregg Toland, the master of deep focus
Cool! Love these kinds of input.
Glad this helped!
You are on fire! A video almost everyday!
And I’m blazing fast with the comment replies 😂😂😂
I need to set up a Patreon account. So I can donate and also get donors eventually in the future.
Joel Dino yeah man it’s super easy, just download the app!
Gregg Toland was the cinematographer for Citizen Kane
Yeah had to google that as soon as I finished the video. What a legend

OMG AMAZING!

can you get me a link to view this item...
Nothing on amazon I found, try to search up “split field diopter” on ebay
Nice, I'm going to invest in some that I saw on B&H this month. Lens interference is a great tool, especially with glass and transparent materials.
Heck year brother! Especially in great light with long lenses
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs almost any lens without a lens hood is great for various reasons. Gels are great also.
