    *OK, because of an absolute bullshit DMCA takedown claim on an older video of mine that's ongoing at the moment, I've had to cut short the ending of this Retro Review using RUclips's video editing function. This is because It used a bit of similar footage to the other video I’m having the DMCA hassles with. I've slightly re-edited the original RRT4 Retro Review ending and made it a separate short upload which you can see here:*

    The games is such a glorious for PS1 quality, neat reflection, amazing fictional cars, with some unique even with questioning physics just like Aracade used to be, As well some kick ass melody soundtrack (amazing as well because it isn't copyright) What a beauty this game is even after 20 years ahead
    Especially, good to see legacy that lives in Ridge Racer PSP with remakes

      They don't do remakes with a delicate touch anymore so maybe that isn't what you're looking for LOL. This game needs the super Mario All-Stars treatment where they improve little things here and there including the graphics but keep the overall feel of the game similar... These days they'll completely butcher a ridge racer type 4 remake because they butcher every remake...

    The Hi-Spec demo disc was the nicest surprise i ever had in videogames, the First Ridge Racer being the first game I had on PS1 back in the day.
    I remember the drifting and bumping issue being a thing in the first instalment, so we can say that it's a 1:1 recreation of the original in 60fps but now that I'm looking back at it, the rotating wheels was a thing from the 2nd Ridge Racer, the 1 one had simple fixed cardboard for wheels... 😆

    My GF plays this on her Anbernic handheld. She just smacks into the wall and Armco at the sides of the tracks all the way around and that's with when using the analogue stick. Even Revs on the CBM 64 had better analogue support than most of these arcade racers. Such a shame there was never an RC car-type controller that because a standard for console racers. I dumped consoles for the PC and proper analogue wheels and handling in the mid 90's. My mate was a big Ridge Racer fan and I think he thought he could use his console driving 'skills' in his real first car because he was always hitting walls with it.

    On the topic of controls, I’ve noticed that whenever I play any of the old school Ridge Racer games, I’ve always felt that I’ve had more control of my car if I’m in first person view. So far, the only exception is Ridge Racer Vita, but that’s mostly so I can see myself driving the Sega Hornet car. Otherwise, first person seems to be the go-to view mode for me when playing a Ridge Racer game.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  2 года назад +1

      I generally prefer 3rd person for Ridge Racer, first person feels too wide, if that makes sense, feels harder to overtake to me. I think I might've mentioned this before, but you should upload some Ridge Racer Vita Hornet videos, even if it's just you pointing a cell phone at the screen as you play. There's a real dearth of them out there, about the only guy who's uploaded several does them all 1st person so you can't actually see the car.

    For Ridge Racer 1, Ridge Racer Revolution, and even Rage Racer, you can't powerslide them the way you do in R4. R4's drift system is far more refined and became the base system all the sequels after it would be using. But for the earlier titles, when you release x and press x again while turning in to initiate the drift, I end up releasing x again while I'm counter-steering and only press x once the car is pointing in the right direction (but this whole action takes less than a second). Also, I only drift in the sharper turns where drifting is the only choice to make the turns. For many corners in the earlier Ridge Racer games, you can simply press square without removing your thumb from the x button. In that way, you can slow the car down without initiating a drift and without killing your momentum.

    I recall buying Ridge Racer Type 4 when it came out and it was instantly my favorite racer ever made. I sunk hundreds of hours into the game grinding the night away trying to unlock more cars. Only thing that got me to stop playing it was release of Dreamcast on 9/9/99 which is the only console I ever bought on launch day. Funny thing I bought the Bleemcast disc that let me play Grand Turismo 2 on Dreamcast with Hi-Res graphics. I had no idea we could play RRT4 with Hi Res graphics. I'm going to look into what's involved in doing this? Replaying that entire game with HD graphics sounds amazing.

    • @MrThunderwing

      Ridge Racer Type 4 was also Bleemcast-able, I burnt a CD-R myself to play it like that before I got the PS3 digital download. I was using ePSXe emulator here to upscale the graphics, but a few people in the comments have suggested some alternatives. Or you could just play the PSP version of Ridge Racer 2 for the lovely RRT4 tracks in it, although it plays a bit differently.

    I'm going to be honest here, ridge racer type 4 definitely has the best vehicle handling model across the four games on PlayStation, coupled with an awesome soundtrack, great vehicle designs, and visual style, but the lack of modes for the single player experience really bothers me, replay value is very important to me, but unfortunately type 4 falls short on that, and I know I ain't the only one with this. You only have Grand Prix and time attack mode, that's it, No single race mode, no custom event feature, nothing.
    The Grand Prix feature is very cool, but it gets so repetitive, sure, you have four teams and four manufacturers to use, but it doesn't make any difference based on its linear race structure.
    For time attack enthusiasts, this is definitely a dream for them, You get to choose any vehicle, any track, and go for the best time.
    Even if you already beat the game and got all the vehicles that you needed, you still need more things to do afterward and keep playing it for years to come, I believe there is more to racing games than just campaign and time attack, even rage racer and rr2 on PSP have a lot more modes and replay value than this does. I really would love a feature to set up my own custom, multi-car races with any of the cars and tracks in the game and enjoy the games awesome racing and visuals that it offers without any restrictions of the Grand Prix mode, If R4 shipped back then with a variety of ways to enjoy the game however we wish, than this game would have much better replay value than it does to this day, this is not an attempt to knock on the game entirely, as this game has a lot of great production values going for it. I've seen that this was going to be reverse engineered for a PC port, and I really hope it fixes all the problems that I had with this game, it deserves it, fingers crossed!

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  9 месяцев назад +1

      Those are definitely valid points, but I can honestly say they didn't really bother me back then. I was coming into this game off the back of old skool arcade racers like Sega Rally and Daytona, which normally only had about 3-5 tracks, so Ridge Racer Type 4 felt like it had more than enough content to keep me going.

    • @tropixx_xlr1549
      @tropixx_xlr1549 9 месяцев назад

      @@MrThunderwing well, I guess I'm different on expectations, I haven't much time on my hands nowadays to play through gp mode with different approaches, even though I did beat it a couple of times back then. The lack of a single race mode in r4 is pretty disappointing, I still play it every now and then, just not for hours, there just could have been more to it, you know? And don't get me wrong, the sega rally series is awesome, I yet to play 2006. I really hope that indie developers can indulge more into colorful race game projects that are very similar to the ones we enjoy on Playstation 1 and 2, that would have been so awesome.

I clip it onto a cocktail stirrer, which is my 'mic holder' and hold it just to the side of my mouth, so it doesn't pick up all the plosive sounds when I'm talking. I've actually just ordered a USB one off Amazon, as it's definitely time I upgraded. The camera I use is just the inbulit one in my phone. I use a combination of OBS and FRAPS (the paid for version) for my PC gaming capture. I paid for FRAPS years and years ago, it's very easy to use, but pretty system intensive and the video files it creates are huuuuge. OBS is pretty good and is free, but doesn't always work with everything I've tried it on. I use an Elgato HD for my external PS3/PS4/Xbox 360 capture. It's got it's own proprietary software, but OBS also works with it and seems better.
      And sure, I'll check out your channel.

    Spot on, the controls in high spec are completely wank, it's simply not fun.

      You really need to use the bumper camera to line the car properly, it's much easier that way

      @@St_Rizla
      I put your advice to the test and I really didn't notice any difference.
      I think the problem with high spec is that it's expecting a force feedback device. If we were in the arcade playing on a force feedback wheel we wouldn't be able to counter steer in the extreme opposite direction, rather we'd only be able to counter steer a certain amount as the wheel fights back against us.
      On the PlayStation D-pad, however, right and left are digital inputs, each time right or left is input the steering is going 100% to the right or left meaning that counter steering on high spec is just going to send you spinning in the opposite direction.
      High Spec is just a proof of concept demo created to assess (wow, that word is so close to asses) if the sacrifices to get to 60fps on PS1 for Ridge Racer were worth it, no effort went into balancing it for a PS1 D-pad (and analogue steering isn't available in this demo, but even if it was you'd still need some force feedback).
      If you'd just spent ten or twenty hours playing R4, a game designed for the PS1 D-pad, and jumped into high spec you'd be totally screwed because your muscle memory --- built around playing R4 --- would work against finishing a lap in high spec.
      Luckily, I haven't played R4 in months, but I still couldn't finish three laps in high spec before the time ran out and it didn't matter whether I was using a grip or drift vehicle, both were squirly, and bumper view didn't help either, I raced just as poorly as in third person.

    Yes this was my favorite RR game. I played this like a absolute ton but I didn't get the Pac car, but I remember how hard the last races were, I have memories of driving like a black or blue batmobile which was about 4 times faster than the first car in the game and the AI was a cheat! 😂
    Absolutely amazing soundtrack though, still grooves to this day, and looking at RR7 it gives off a bit of a F-Zero GX vibe, I haven't played it and I really should, same with Rave Racer.

      Man, RUclips's so weird sometimes, I just got a notification today about this comment, even though you left it a month ago. Edit - no you didn't, I just can't read.
      F-Zero GX is another game I absolutely love. Great soundtrack too!

      @@MrThunderwing yes, really smart move by Nintendo at the time to get Sega and Toshihiro Nagoshi's team to basically make a new F-Zero. I was still kinda coming to terms that Sega had went software only and as you know it would have been unthinkable just a few years before for Sega and Nintendo to work together.
      Made on the Super Monkey Ball engine if memory serves, GX was and I bet still is awesome! I've been hoping for a proper sequel ever since, it's a great IP Nintendo are just doing nothing with, it's a shame.

    Namco messed up on the naming of Edge of the Earth and Brightest Nite --- it's Brightest that has the big jump you approach like you're leaving the edge of the earth; I'm certain this was all an unintentional naming snafu.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  2 года назад +7

      What a weirdly backhanded compliment... I can 'handle' the game just fine, thanks - I'm not even sure how you can just jump to a judgement like that, from a compilation of clips of me using so many different easy, medium, hard and very hard vehicles across a load of tracks that equally are very variable in their difficulty. I completed the easy and medium GPs several times over to get the footage for this, without any problems and did parts of the hard and expert GPs too. I even completed a few of the trials for good measure. The only cars I struggled playing with were the top tier ones and the ones from the trials, pretty understandable really considering I hadn't played the game in many, many years and they are notoriously difficult to handle. Also, don't tell other people what view they 'should' play the game in, it's entirely up to the individual how they want to enjoy it. If you only ever play in 1st person view, you're probably not used to seeing how wide the arc of the drift is on the drift cars in 3rd person. If you want to complement someone on a game review, maybe you should lead with that, instead of an unnecessary and unwanted critique of the way the reviewer's playing it.

    While I love almost everything about the game, I just hated the soundtrack. I'm in the minority here, but I don't care. I think the music was awful, cringy, and out-of-place in many of its songs. I enjoyed the previous game's music and music style far more than here. But, the game itself is the BESt in the series by far.
