    I've had my homemade engraving setup for 2 years now and only disassembled the piston and cylinder once for maintenance after a year, but this still running strong. I love that even if the most expensive part fails, the compressor, then it's only a 36 dollar repair 👌. I bought a Lindsay classic about a year ago and still use both systems for different things. The homemade machine definitely has a more hammer strike type impact. The lindsay is smooth and almost ultra-sonic like. For the price the homamde machine is extremely impressive and Rick has made it so easy to build with his design, keeping the cost down as well. It's definitely worth building if your interested in hand engraving ✌️

    i've bought this foot pedal, and modified it alittle so the valve starts opening as you start pressing and has a wider range between off and full, i basically put a spring on the pin and another spring around it to hold it in place. i got lucky having a good spring to use but with abit of trial and error you can get it working great

    Great informative video..
    Just one suggestion, I would use 2 fans. 1 inlet and 1 outlet. That would create better air flow for the power supply. I use these kind of power supplies for other things and I know from experience these things can get warm. Just make sure you don't set both fans to draw air in!

    If your compressor is making an awful loud noise, the cap that sits on the sleeve for the piston needs to be oriented in a specific way. The underside of that cap has a notch cut out so the screw holding the piston flap has room to move.

    I was building this and when I turned it on, a couple minutes and the capacitor in the compressor blew up. I don’t think the polarities were wrong because I also followed the lighter connector to see which one was positive and negative
    I was wondering if it was because it wasn’t being supplied with 12v because of the controller, and perhaps your compressor has a different circuit that can handle it ?
    I really don’t know, thanks in advance

      Yep, clear vinyl tubing. Be aware that different brands of the tubing have slightly different diameters, so buy the tubing and mic it before you drill the hole in the handle, if you have already drilled the hole, take a mic with you and make sure the tubing you buy is slightly larger than the hole in the handle.

    • @ralex397
      @ralex397  6 лет назад +2

      After looking at air horn compressors they should work fine, and may be of a higher quality than the harbor freight ones. An air tank is not needed after the compressor has been modified.

    • @savestheday258
      @savestheday258 3 года назад +1

      @@ralex397 I was going to say the same thing. Theres a few nicer air horn compressors but I'd make sure it's marked heavy duty and not light duty imo 👍. You'll see both. Brilliant set up Rick! Could you explain what the purpose of 2 foot pedals is please? I understand the one that controls the amount of air to the handpiece has an impact on the hammer action but what is the other on for?

    • @ralex397
      @ralex397  4 года назад +3

      It is a personal preference thing, right now all I am only using is the tattoo pedal for on and off, bypassing the air foot pedal gives the hand piece a little extra power for engraving 4140 steel. I also wanted the compressor to turn off when I wasn't engraving. It is a setup choice, what works for you, here are a couple options. I will switch to the air pedal when I need finer control. Its all about what works the best for you.

    in ones choice of air compresore is bigger better?

    • @ralex397
      @ralex397  Год назад +2

      I have only worked with the Harbor Freight tire inflators, so I don't know if bigger would be better. It seems to be a balancing act between the displacement of the modified compressor cylinder bore and stroke, the length of tubing, air foot pedal if used and the bore and stroke size of the hand piece. I would think a larger compressor would require a larger hand piece but I could be wrong. Give it a try and let me know!

      With an electric foot pedal all you have is on and off, with an air pedal you have more control over the cut, you can ease into it. It all depends on the type engraving your doing and how much control you need.

    Hi Mr. Alexander!
    Nice job!Nice to see that precise work.
    I have a short question.
    What do you think that kind of assembly:
    -there is no any speed conrol of the motor,instead of it I'd like to use a single damper on the air tube.
    The system running on permanent speed.But when i adjust that damper,the oscillating air space in the tube and the cylinders has a little leak,so the the energy what hits the engraving tool became adjustable at the same time.
    I dont know,what will be the result.It'just a concept.
    What is your opinion?
    Have a good job!
    Sorry about my weak english.

      15 amp or more, the modified compressor I use is 15 amp but it is never under a load, the only problem I have had are bad power supplies.

      Very hard to trouble shoot from your description, lets start at the compressor, with it disconnected from the speed controller does the compressor run when hooked up to 12 volts ?

      On mine the negative wire is the wire with the printing on it, but it will run hooked up either way, long enough to test it, it wont hurt the motor.

      @@phillipchmura5193 That I do not know.They are made in China, if you get a new compressor plug it in and make sure it works before you mod and wire it. Unless you hooked up 110 volts to it, 12 volts shouldn't burn it up. Did it work before you modified it?

    I had a look on ebay for those "tattoo foot peddles"... nowhere does it gave a current rating.
    According to your wiring, the entire motor current goes through the foot switch. This may be a bit much for such a device. (it is just a variable resistor) It would be advisable to use a small relay in-between these two, so that the relay switches the motor current and the foot-switch switches only the rely current...
    I suspect these foot peddles to be capable of sustaining a few 100 mili amps, not a the few amps that small DC motor is going to pull...
    A mono jack or socket is most definitely NOT suited to have a few amps running through it for a sustained period !

    • @ralex397
      @ralex397  4 года назад

      I have had no problems with it, it is an on off switch not a variable resistor. All I need is on and off for what I do. An air foot peddle is used if you need to ease into a cut.

      That said, it's 12 volt... you're not going to accidentally commit acts of domestic terrorism with this thing ! Worst thing that can happen is that the peddle or the socket releases what is know as "the magic smoke" and goes tits up !
