  • Headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh reacts to a new report that suggests pupils hand in or lock up their phones at the start of each day as an “effective ban” may have a positive impact on a school’s performance.
Criticism from parents, children or campaigners should not deter school staff from consistently enforcing mobile phone bans, according to a paper by centre-right think tank Policy Exchange.
An effective phone ban offers “potential benefits” for school performance and pupil attainment, as well as children’s wellbeing, the report said.
It comes after schools in England were given Government guidance in February intended to stop the use of mobile phones during break and lunch periods in schools, as well as in lessons.
Katharine says “Children aren't mature enough to deal with it"

I can’t think of any legitimate reason for CHILDREN to have unrestricted smartphone.
You don’t need a smartphone to call or text!
If they need to use Google.
They have school computers for that!

Amen! High bout time it will be forbidden...if I'd have a say, till 18!!! Exactly...in school they have computers and they can learn to use an encyclopedia again! Real books 📚 to read!
P.S...or ask a parent to Google on theirs!

I agree, a great head teacher with respect for British values, there should be a ban.

Am I missing something here ? If kids have access to Laptops/PCs or iPads etc then where is the danger in kids having a smartphone. I would say its more dangerous for them to NOT have a smart phone in 2024. Potential kidnappings weirdos everywhere. I want them to have me on the other end of a phone if they need me.

I agree with Katharine 100% on this. We need to go further and make 16 the minimum age for cycling on a public road, which is even more dangerous to under-16s than is mobile phone use.

3:00 well its your fault they are not mature enough you should teach them internet safety in 3rd year seeing as its gloably used for businesses you should educate your children not take their personal freedom away just because poor funded schools are not teaching the basics of internet safety you dont hear these kind of storys comeing from paid education do you so id dissagree.
