Chuck took every action possible to prove he was right about Jimmy. All he cared about was being right.
Right, we all knew he was "right" about who Jimmy was, we had the experience of Breaking Bad to prove it. But he was wrong that he couldn't just let it go, Jimmy took care of his brother, and he was lucky to have him, his character brought out the best in Jimmy. Why couldn't he just try and support Jimmy? In a way Chuck was a far worse person then Saul.
The same vibe as Hector being right about Gus.
Both Hector and Chuck are sick bitter old men who were spot on about the people they hate.
However, Gus wouldn’t have gone that way if Hector didn’t kill his boyfriend first.
That too. That's a similar trait a lot of cops in the real world have, which surpasses doing "the right thing", because they just want to make arrests; be right, and win. Just like a lot of DA's/prosecutors.

“Coloring outside the lines is just too attractive to him” I think that’s a perfect way to describe Jimmy. I think it’s a great representation of Saul’s rationalization of his actions. He has an extraordinary aptitude for creativity and expression, but has difficulty staying within (what he’d consider to be) societal, personal, and legal restraints, which is the plight of many creative types, no matter how successful. Unfortunately the situation becomes out of control when the lines that are being crossed are moral boundaries.

Chuck did a great job of making the audience root for Jimmy. He was an essential part of the early to mid seasons and was the best antagonist for Jimmy.
He helped Kim with Mesa Verde is what he did. He was a brave american lawyer and in this house Saul Goodman is a hero, end of story.

Yeah, despite what Jimmy doing being illegal, it wasn't immoral given the context... Kim earned Mesa Verde, Chuck and Howard got them on his side in an EXTREMELY underhanded (one could say Slippin') fashion. Mike's speech about bad cops and good criminals comes to mind.

8:09 now this I disagree with. Yes Jimmy was always Slippin’ Jimmy but he also had some level of ability to change for the better if not steer his life in a better direction. Both Jimmy and Chuck are at fault for certain things but Chuck’s inability to love his brother and get over his jealousy brought down his and Jimmy’s downfall. Yes he was right but at the end of the day, he chose to let Jimmy become the self fulfilling prophecy he claimed. It’s one thing to point out someone’s poor choices and ridicule them, but it’s another to sit and do nothing to help steer that person in the right direction. Jimmy wouldn’t have been the most perfect and straight edge lawyer in the world, but he would’ve mostly stayed away from criminal activities. Chuck could’ve been as right as he wanted to, but that doesn’t amount to shit because at the end of the day, some of his actions influenced Jimmy to fully become Saul. Again, not ignoring Jimmy’s faults, he’s done some bad shit too obviously. But this whole notion of “oh yeah even if Chuck was good to Jimmy, Jimmy still would’ve been Saul” is I’d say a complete straw man argument. Nobody was saying Saul would be *perfect* by any means but he would’ve been far better off as a person/lawyer

This is the best way I could’ve ever described it, I’m in my 3-4 year of psychology and this is how I’ve felt throughout the entirety of the show, I believe jimmy wanted to try and be as straight as possible, he wouldn’t have taken the lawyer job if he didn’t want to (we all know Saul if he doesn’t like something he won’t do it unless he’s forced to) he tried, he wanted to make a person of himself and you can see it in the acting and the way he almost begs for chucks approval you can also see the heartbreak and decent almost every time chuck dismisses him, it’s like making a bad decision in a video game

Chuck was 100% right about Jimmy. But he was so much of a dick about it that he made it all worse. Also he should have just told Jimmy why he wasn't hired at HHM from the start. I honestly think Jimmy could have understood after a while if Chuck put all cards on the table.

I hated Chuck going into the show on first watch, as I thought about I started to understand Chuck. As a man who sees family as everything I think it is disgusting to treat your brother the way he did, but still knowing Jimmy, he'd be paranoid. but hatred and jealously is the hidden evil within chuck, that connects him Jimmy.
I feel the same, but since you have a Griffith pfp, i just hate that fucker in general.
Chuck gives Jimmy a lot of support. He doesn't want him working for his company like you wouldn't want your addict brother working on your job.
Jimmy loved Chuck, but he wasn't above destroying Chucks' life. What Jimmy did went so against the brotherhood-code that I completely understood Chuck giving up on the relationship.
It's the whole nature vs nurture debate.
- Maybe Jimmy could have become a great, by-the-book lawyer if he'd had Chuck's support and strict guidance from day one.
- Or maybe Jimmy would never be able to help himself, and was always destined to become (at best) a shady lawyer.
His brief stint at Davis and Main suggests the latter might be true to me.
The Davis & Main arc pretty much settles that Chuck was right. Despite having a great opportunity to develop his career at a major firm, he threw it away due to having one of his ideas denied. Jimmy was just searching for a excuse to go back to his old ways imo

There is a reason why people sympathize with Howard’s death more than Chuck’s death albeit Howard had no mental illness.
Because those legitimate chances that Jimmy wasted (Davis and Main and HHM) were all being provided by Howard. Howard saw Jimmy’s potential and felt bad that he was Chuck’s puppet in sabotaging Jimmy’s career so he tried to make things right. It was after Jimmy turned full evil and harassed him that Howard was like “Yep, Chuck’s right.”
Chuck, on the other hand, didn’t give Jimmy any chance when Jimmy wasn’t that evil and had a potential to be good (Jimmy was straight and narrow for years during that time). That’s why while Chuck wasn’t wrong about his brother, his actions went all the wrong way.

A lot of what people talk about are events shown in flashbacks, moments where jimmy genuinely wanted to improve but was kicked down despite it.

Kim is definitely bad LIKE Jimmy, but she’s demonstrably better due to the fact that she woke up, left the arrangement, and eventually turned herself in. Morally compromised? Sure. As bad as Jimmy? No way. I would say much of her path is due to Jimmy, but of course she bears responsibility for her own part in their unethical hijinks.
Well...I mean yeah, Kim 100% could have said no if she wanted to at pretty much any point, its just that she didnt want to. Thing is, though (probably due to not wanting to be like her mother), she was REALLY good at supressing those impulses, and it was Jimmy that let her be the slightly shady and maybe a little self-destructive person she really is. Without Jimmy, and Kim's new mexico life would have been exactly like her life in florida - safe, boring, and completely empty.

He kind help of made Jimmy become a self-fulfilling prophecy, with his paranoia and fear, feed the worst of Chuck, avoiding seeing the moments that Jimmy tried to improve, and thinking that Chuck's way of doing things was the only way that was correct, not seeing other possibilities.

I think you're crazy if you think Chuck's condescension towards Jimmy had no part in his development. Chuck's condescension, even if he was right, is a terrible way to go about trying to help someone. Jimmy looked up to Chuck and even when he tried to do the right thing Chuck would constantly tell him that he couldn't. You live in a fantasy world if you think that wouldn't damage someone and make them act out, it's a very common thing. I think Kim's compassion helped Jimmy more than anything in undoing the damage Chuck inflicted, and she's the reason he was ultimately able to come to terms with himself.
Just think about a time where you were in an argument with someone and they were treating you like shit, calling you terrible names, etc. did you just openly admit you were wrong to that person? Probably not. Most people wouldn't. It's very uncommon that you can change someone's mind with anger and hatred the way Chuck constantly did, and while I'm not saying Chuck was totally at fault necessarily, he absolutely was not helping and only making things worse. Just because he was 'right' doesn't mean how he treated Jimmy was right.

@@CBMX_GAMING It was okay in small batches with Mikes story line and I enjoyed the Mike stuff but it kinda got out of hand. Especially when Mike, a guy who throughout the show was someone who never missed a beat, suddenly let Ziegler get out, and let Lalo get to Fring.
I started watching because of the intrigue of Saul and the court stuff but I stayed because of the converging storylines between the cartels and the lawyers. To each their own I guess🤷♂️
Season 4 was the best season and it had two chuck flash backs, they just didn't know where to take the characters of Saul, Mike, and Gus after they pretty much become the same characters that they are in Breaking Bad
that was put there to be an origin story for breaking bad, as some audience viewers might get bored with the legal drama. I was bored with none of it. I like the converging storylines as well.

Chuck also said prison would help jimmy change. Chuck also also was ok giving jimmy no jail time if he just lost his ability to be a lawyer.
Chucks real motivation is a jelousy that jimmy is morw loved than him. Somthing that was confirmed by micheal mckean the actor for chuck.

The momment jimmy became saul was with kristy eposito because what happenws is a part of him died its that he wants somebody to help him change but he is being told nobody forgets nobody forgives he was never going tk be given a chance to change. Jimmy always was able to change its not even inconsistent.
He moved from illonois to new mexico said good bye to his old freind got a job in the mail room studied for the bar exam. The bar exam isnt online and takes cheating seriously you have to go some where and jimmy would have tk empty his pockets and get a quiz specifically for him so the only way to pass is to genuinly be good. Jimmy did all of this not just because he had no choice he did it because he wanted tk change.
Jimmy is willing tk change if he has somebkdy to fight for. He puts others above himself.

So chuck is kind of right and wrong. He convinced jimmy into beleiving he would never chsnged meaning for a time he was right. But then when jimmy finally took responsibility he proved chuck wrong. The exit sign is interpeted to imply chuck js proud of jimmy.
The thing is chuck has a pattern whrre he blames others and never himself. His ehs was an excuse to not talk to his wife outside or on the phone and his jimmy will never change isnt any different there is some valid reasoning but chuck dismissed the fact jimmy restarted his life and spent a decade to become a lawyer with a full time job thats the signs of somebody who is hard working it takes 7 years to become a lawyer jimmy had to do so while doing full time. He takes short cuts and in season 1 wasnt perfect but was capable of chsnging.

I get your points Kino but to me I would’ve respected Chuck a lot more if he were just straight up honest about his hatred for Jimmy. When he first finds out Jimmy passed the bar and then feigns pride for him is when my estimation of Charles McGill as a man just fuckin plummeted.
You missed the quote Chuck says about Jimmy about their father’s funeral. “No one cried harder than jimmy.” Jimmy truly loved his father, but this was also a clue as chucks suspicion of Jimmy’s guilt. Jimmy realized he aided in ruining his fathers life, and so he dedicated his later years grifting other wolfs.
From what we have seen he hasn’t really screwed an innocent person with Marco, only people who are also scammers themselves.
Chuck and Jimmy's relationship was fascinating to watch. One of the best parts of the whole show.
I think a vital moment for this argument is when Chuck questioned how Jimmy got all the clients for Davis & Mane. At first, I literally groaned when Chuck was the only one at that meeting, questioning Jimmy's integrity, but he was right. Jimmy was soliciting the elderly and it could've damaged the reputation of both HHM and D&M. Though they probably could've avoided one little thing, it definitely shows that Jimmy almost can't help himself and that behavior could manifest into something worse (like the commercial he did for D&M without their consent).
Chuck wasn't wrong to be concerned about his brother, who has a genuine knack for scamming people, but there is definitely a case for the "self fulfilling prophecy" argument because Jimmy was genuinely trying while Chuck never believed he could change and it definitely hurt Jimmy finding out he never had his brothers trust. I think if Chuck continued to help Jimmy along and fully supported him, it's possible Jimmy could've avoided sliding back into his old ways, but we'll never know and I think that's the point... it's good writing.
Huge assumptions with poor evidence. Chuck's attitude and actions towards Jimmy became self fulfilling prophecy. He's an older brother and as someone who is supposedly more mature he bears more responsibility. But he wasn't mature, he was just as flawed as Jimmy and he unwittingly nudged him in the wrong direction. Just because he didn't mean to doesn't absolve him of responsibility.
One of my favourite moments in the series is in Plan And Execution, when Jimmy and Kim lure Howard into suspecting corruption which results in his own boardroom freakout, made worse by drugs they slipped into his system to make him look like he was tweaking. Chuck's portrait hangs on the wall in the background, grinning the whole time as if to say "I told you so."

The sheer audacity of saying Jimmy owning the consequences was an admission that Chuck was right about him while outright ignoring the fact that he had to face his *regrets* to do that, which is the one thing Chuck told him *never* to do, so much that he was willing to kill himself just to hammer the point home, is downright flabbergasting. And Chuck didn't think the law was sacred. He's guilty of perjury, arson, fraud by omission and petty theft, *just* in the time that we see of him. Jimmy admitting to the courtroom that he ratted out Chuck to the insurance firm and calling what he did a crime in spite of the fact that legally speaking, Chuck was in the wrong there, was a direct refutation of Chuck's black and white moral code that not even Chuck himself could ever live up to. Everything Chuck said about the law was utter bs to mask his hubris and pride. He and Walter are cut from the exact same cloth, which by the way, was the whole point of Walt's "So you were always like this." line. Walt was always the monster he is. Chuck was always the monster he is. Jimmy was made in Chuck's image.
Kim is what proves that people can change--because of Kim, Jimmy owned up to what he did and became himself again...James Morgan McGill. When given the proper motivation and guidance, James kept on the good road because he knew he had someone to do it for. Jimmy, the whole time Chuck was sick--shopped for him, went to him for advice--ie he was there for his brother when he was at his lowest because Chuck was there for him and wanted to do right by him. Chuck betrayed that notion by stabbing him in the back when it came to working at HHM. Chuck IS partly responsible because of his egotism and not willing to give Jimmy a chance. Jimmy wanted to work with his brother and be a family. He was doing that. But Chuck ruined it and the only reason Jimmy didn't stay on the road at the rival outfit to HHM was because he no support, no one to do it for. He wasn't working directly with Kim or Chuck there...he was solo. So with no anchor, Jimmy drifts into his old habits.
Chuck was an exceptional character
Another original, top-tier video as always. I completely agree with everything you said, and it's funny that people like to praise the show for having complex, nuanced writing and yet constantly keep simplying things by saying "hur dur it's all Chuck's fault, Jimmy did nothing wrong, he was a poor victim that only went bad when he wasn't handed a prestigious law-firm job on a silver platter because of nepotism." Acting like Jimmy wasn't to blame for his problems is completely missing the deeper psychological point of the series.

Walter was a criminal and similar to Chuck in almost every single way, but when shit hit the fan, he sacrificed every single penny he had to save Hank's life and refused sending him to Belize to save his own ass.

So ofc hed revert to his old ways in David & Maines with the death of his best friend and do what he knew he could do. in the final episode when we see chuck again, he talks to jimmy about his cases, and jimmy starts insulting and humiliating his clients, sounding almost disappointed that he doesnt work high profile cases, and you can see how much chuck cares about those cases even though they are little, and that is the difference between them, jimmy wanted to cut corners and always showed it to chuck, he always wanted glory and not actually to respect and uphold the law, if jimmy had actually shown growth i am pretty sure chuck would have supported him but jimmy was doing his slipping stuff and chuck always figured it out (in ep1 when the kids get hurt chuck finds a medical bill, in the ep hero chuck realizes jimmy orchestrated the whole event to get more recognition) chuck was never wrong or even a bad person by any means, baiting his bro to admit that he changed the numbers isnt evil because his brother did change the numbers to hurt chuck.
Haven’t finished the video yet but, finally someone who gets it… Chuck is the best antagonist in the Breaking Bad universe after Gus (specifically in Breaking Bad) and I’m tired of pretending like Lalo is even in the same league.

I'd have to disagree. The show clearly displays had Jimmy been given a second chance, he'd definitely redeem himself. Chucks jealousy and prejudice against his little brother not only made Saul stay bad, but become worse.
Counterpoint: During the first season of the show in which Jimmy was fully enjoying his second chance that Chuck gave him, he pulled the billboard scam and the skating brothers scam. This shows that, even with Chuck's support, Jimmy would still have found ways to "color outside the lines" as Kino put it.
jimmy's second chnance was leaving howard alone but instead he made his life hell, much like he did with chuck. he did not learn until he was cornered by a prison sentence lol. also, highly disagree chuck made him stay bad or become worse. put that on kim who actively enabled him

10:00 I think some very important context is needed here. Chuck was born in 1944, meaning he was 15-16 years older than Jimmy. He graduated from high school *very* early (canonically 14 or 15, I believe) and went off to UPenn & Georgetown. Presumably, he finished undergrad at 19 and got his JD at 22. He returned from either law school or clerking as a young adult (probably fresh out of law school) to audit the store. He would’ve been 22-24, meaning Jimmy was ~6-9 years old at the time the store closed.
I don’t care how slippery someone is, literally no 7 year old can pull of a grand heist of or anything in the neighborhood of $14,000. I know he said “ever since he was 9,” but I wonder if a) Chuck came back during the summer, and Jimmy turned 9 around when their father died, or b) Chuck genuinely does not know exactly how old Jimmy is.
The fact that Chuck tried to pin their father’s death on a child who was likely 7 years old (8 at the oldest really, since Jimmy was born in November) is incredibly messed up. I would NOT be shocked if Chuck verbally berated Jimmy over this at some point. I mean, come on. It’s Chuck.

As someone whose family worked against his success, this show really hit home and dredged up feelings.
In S1 Jimmy doesn't do anything that morally wrong, if ethically questionable. The Kettleman scam was just to get them as clients, he didn't want their stolen money. Look at Jimmy's path - passes the bar, rejected from HHM, is told by Chuck ( supposedly from Howard) to not use his name. The war with Howard makes sense. Then the Sandpiper case was legit. I don't think he was trying to get Chuck to do his work out of laziness, even if he did want to partner with him.
Chuck in late S1 should have been mentoring Jimmy and steering him away from his "eccentric" behaviors, not sabotaging him. It's only after discovering Chuck's betrayal that he starts doing unquestionably immoral and unethical things.
Chuck did also try to get at Jimmy via Kim. Effectively committing extortion but not admitting to it.
As moral as he thinks he is, he wasn't that much better than his brother.

Chuck led Jimmy to become Saul Goodman. Yea Jimmy makes his own choices but Jimmy always sought for Chuck's approval. It's all he ever wanted and when he genuinely tried to change for the better, Chuck impeded his growth every step of the way.

I think Chuck's mistake was to believe that Jimmy would never change. In his last convo, he tells Jimmy to stop apologizing, but not to accept responsibility for his actions and tell people the truth. Just keep lying and stop feeling bad about it.
Chuck was right about everything, tried everything in his power to give Jimmy a good life, all he received was disdain and lies, till it eventually destroyed everything around him. Jimmy is, and always was, pure evil, but because he has funny zingers and doesn't put out cigarettes on his tongue people don't want to see it.
Chuck might have been harsh on Jimmy but there was good reason for Chuck to be this way. Chuck's weakness was allowing him to become obsessed with exposing Jimmy, and when that failed it drove Chuck insane. Chuck did go crazy, but Jimmy made him this way. You could argue Chuck could've handled it better, but Jimmy created a monster out of his brother. For all Chuck's fault's he did try to give Jimmy advice, and help but Jimmy abused his chances, and kept taking advantage of people, and the circumstances he faced. So yes, Chuck was right.

He intentionally said things out of context to make Chuck look better than he is. He omitted the fact about the reason Jimmy had to take shortcut, the reason Jimmy switched the numbers and Chuck’s regret.

@@nont18411 1. no one is saying chuck is a good guy. he is flawed and human like everyone else in the show. he makes mistakes. he lets his anger get the best of him. he is irritating sometimes. but the show humanizes and explains his rationale very well. lots of people just don't want to empathize because the "fuck chuck" train is so popular and easy to jump on
2. kim did not own mesa verde. yes, it sucked that she lost them as a client, but she was no doubt skilled and talented enough to win more clients in the future. chuck did not bully her or even tarnish her name whatsoever. he simply pitched his company's strengths in a very professional business meeting. there was nothing unethical or immoral about this at all. companies and practices do this all the time. this does not excuse forgery and bribery over something this petty. at all. regardless of what you think chuck's true motivations were.
3. jimmy took it upon myself (not even at kim's request) to ACTUALLY break the law and do a bunch of fucked up things because he felt it was a personal attack against him. he says it was for kim, but it was really because of his ego and entitlement. kim winds up not even enjoying that client anyway and quitting lol so it was kind of a waste.
4. just because chuck is painted as a pompous and arrogant guy who is opposed to the protagonist of the show doesn't make him a villain. nor a bad guy.
I always say, if you ever find yourself hating a character so much, not the actor themselves, the actual character… the writers and actors did their job. If it draws out any kind of response, either you love them or hate them, they successfully and effectively portrayed the character exactly as he or she was meant to come across

Fragile people have a greater need to control the people around themselves. Chuck is the most fragile and clings tightest to his abstract notion of the law. It is his tragic flaw. It is doubly tragic the harm & perverse incentive it placed on Jimmy, who as a stereotypical younger brother aimed to please while proving himself. Jimmy's adaptability was turned bad through Chuck's ultimate rejection.

I think not entirely cause Jimmy always had hmm inclinations to breaking the rules, but propably sels-fulfilling prophecy only strengthen his problem and by putting a little more trust in and supporting Jimmy he migth have grown up to totally different person, that’s what a theory says.
Chuck was right about Jimmy, but his resentment towards Jimmy is what didn’t allow Chuck to stop Jimmy the right way.

I wouldn't go as far to say that Chuck was right, because many of his actions that he did were just cold. However, the best way to describe him is what Howard said at the end of S5:
"You know who really knew Jimmy? Chuck."

Chuck was right about Jimmy, but it was wrong of him to sabotage his career. Jimmy really made efforts to become to legitimate lawyer and only started down his old path once he was denied advancement and had to scrounge to survive did he have to turn back to crime. And his problems at the other firm he came to work at wasn't due to scheming or unethical things, it was his work and creativity being denied, he had ideas that would work and had to capacity to greatly help is his clients. Him leaving his other job was purely Jimmy and his actions as a criminal was purely Jimmy and oyu cna;t blame chuck for that, but I blame him and dislike him because he hurt his brother and treated him poorly, a brother who was being kind, patient and taking care of him. Jimmy was trying his hardest to repay Chuck and live up to the promise he made and Chuck was the one who threw it away.
Chuck would’ve put Jimmy in prison for life he might of even gotten him the death penalty if he would’ve been alive by season six so you’re not wrong there.
I actually disagree that Jimmy has a need to scam. I think its fun for him and it's often benefits him to. But he made so many attempts to go clean, even Kim convinced him to do more types of scams when he had been straigt for several episodes.
