This holy cave is nearly a kilometre long and houses a 4 ft high, naturally formed ‘Shivling’. It is considered second only to the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in religious importance. There are stalactites and stalagmites dripping milky limestone water.
To the left of Shivling Mata Parwati is symbolized by impression of Her Holy feet. Kartikeya is also seen in left of Shivlingam. At nearly 2.5 feet above, five headed Ganesha is can be seen. The Holy cave has a number of other natural images which are believed to be that of 33 crores Hindu Deities.
The cave roof is etched with snake like formations, the water trickles through these in the cave. ‘Three pronged lance’ depicting the Trident (Trishul) of Lord Shiva and ‘Six Mouthed Sheshnaga’ are also seen on the roof of the cave.
The main portion of cave roof has round cutting mark signifying construction of cave by Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu.
Holy cave of Lord Shiva is situated at Shiv Khori (Ransoo) . A large fair takes place on shivratri day which continues for three days.In July an estimated 16,000 devotees visit this place. This Holy Cave attracts near about 20 lac pilgrims every .
The legend associated with Shiv Khori is very fascinating. It goes that thousands of years ago, a demon called Bhashmasur spent a lot of time meditating deeply on Lord Shiv. In time Bhashmasur is believed to have extracted a blessing from Lord Shiva that he be given the power to end the life of any one by keeping his had on his head.
And after obtaining such blessing, the demon Bhashmasur intended to end Lord Shiva. Realizing the evil design of the demon, the Lord Shiva decided to escape alongwith Mata Parwati and Nandi cow to safety.
In the process Lord Shiva stopped at a place near Shivkhori for rest. But the demon that was following closely reached there as well; and started fighting with Lord Shiva. Even after a dreadful battle the Lord Shiva decided not to kill Bhashmasur so as to keep dignity of his own blessings.
While leaving the battle Lord Shiva threw his trident (Trishul) to create the famous Cave of Shiv Khori. The design of the entrance allowed only Lord Shiva alongwith Mata Parwati and Nandi cow to enter this cave leaving the demon out side.
Realizing this, Lord Vishnu in the guise of a lady, came and lured the demon to dance to her steps. Bhashmasur was so intoxicated with the dance that the demon started following each move of the dance as dictated by Lord Vishnu in the disguise of a lady. Lord Vishnu then made an ultimate move by keeping one hand on the head and as the demon followed the step by keeping his hand on his own head, Bhashmasur was killed by his own power. Lord Vishnu alongwith other deities then entered the Holy cave.
As per the legend 33 crores deities have manifested in this Holy cave in shape of pindies. The views of natural impression & images of Hindu Deities is a fascinating sight inside the cave.
In Reasi district, there are many shrines such as Mata Vaishno Devi, Merhada Mata, Baba Dhansar, Siad Baba. Shiv Khori is one of them located in Ransoo a village in the Pouni block in Reasi district, which attracts lakhs of devotees annually. Shiv Khori is situated in between the hillocks about 140 km north of Jammu, 120 km from Udhampur and 80 km from Katra.and light vehicles go up to Ransoo, the base camp of pilgrimage. People have to traverse about 3 km on foot on a track recently constructed by the Shiv Khori Shrine Board, Ransoo duly headed by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu as Chairman and District Development Commissioner, Reasi as vice-chairman.
Khori means cave (Guffa) and Shiv Khori thus denotes Shiva's cave. This natural cave is about 200 metres long, one metre wide and two to three metres high and contains a self made lingam, which according to the people is unending. The first entrance of the cave is so wide that 300 devotees can be accommodated at a time. Its cavern is spacious to accommodate large number of people. The inner chamber of the cave is smaller.
The passage from outer to the inner chamber is low and small, at one spot it divides itself into two parts. One of these is believed to have led to Kashmir where Swami Amarnath cave is located. It is now closed as some sadhus who dared to go ahead never returned.[citation needed] To reach the sanctum sanctorum, one has to stoop low, crawl or adjust his body sideward. Inside a naturally created image of Lord Shiva, about 4 metres high, is visible. The cave abounds with a number of other natural objects having resemblance with Goddess Parvati, Ganesha and Nandigan. The cave roof is etched with snake formations, the water trickles through these on Shiva Lingam. Pigeons are also seen here like Swami Amar Nath cave which presents good omens for pilgrimages.
About 40 to 50 years ago, only a few people knew about the Shiv Khori shrine but it has gained much popularity during recent decades.

ഒരു സംശയം ചോദിച്ചോട്ടെ. (ശരിക്കും അറിയാഞ്ഞിട്ടാണ് പരിഹസിക്കുന്നതല്ല ) മത്സ്യം , കൂർമ്മം ,വരാഹം, നരസിംഹം, വാമനൻ , പരശുരാമൻ, ശ്രീരാമൻ, ബലരാമൻ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ , കൽക്കി. ഇവയെല്ലാം മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ അവതാരമാണല്ലൊ; എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് മോഹിനി എന്ന അവതാരം ഇതിൽ പെടുന്നില്ല ? മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റേത് ദശവതാരങ്ങൾ മാത്രമല്ലല്ലോ?
മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന് അനേകം അവതാരങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്‌. അംശാവതാരം, കലാവതാരം അങ്ങനെ. അവതാരാം ഹി അസംഖ്യേയം, എന്നു ഭാഗവത പുരാണം തന്നെ പറയുന്നു. പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട അവതാരങ്ങൾ 10. ഭഗവാന്റെ അവതാരങ്ങൾ എണ്ണി തിട്ടപ്പെടുത്താൻ ആവില്ല. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
അതെ ഒരു പാട് അവതാരങ്ങളുണ്ട്. , അറിയാം. ഓരോ അവതാരങ്ങൾക്കും അതിന്റെ അർത്ഥവും ലക്ഷ്യവുമുണ്ട്. ഓരോന്നും പ്രാധാന്യം അർഹിക്കുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും എന്തുകൊണ്ട് 10 എണ്ണം ( ദശാവതാരം) എടുത്തു പറയുന്നു ? ഇതാണ് എന്റെ സംശയം.!
