Leaving the stalk in was the right thing to do. The problem with buttons on the steering wheel is when you try to indicate while the wheel is off center, you would have to look down to find them. Trust me, that's the last thing you want to do do going a round a busy multi-lane roundabout in the UK.
it's easy. i do it ask the time here in Australia. we have the same roundabouts and road rules as in the UK. i understand women may not be able to do it due to smaller hands.
I have never seen anybody use the blinkers at a round a bout of which there are many where I live. Why not press the button before entering the round a bout so the wheel is not off Centred? Also, do you really need signals in a round a bout? Maybe your roundabouts have many lanes but doesn’t each lane have only 1 or 2 options(exit the round a bout or stay in the round a bout, no lane changes allowed inside the round a bout) that would be obvious which direction a random car was going to take by the car’s body language and speed?
@@chrisroger2000 On a medium sized roundabout you should indicate that you are leaving the roundabout just after the junction before your departure junction. This makes it clear to vehicles that are joining after your junction that they are free to join.
Mistakes were made, nice to see Tesla recognising the issue with using buttons on a movable object, absolutely absurd decision and I'm glad they didn't belligerently try to save face by keeping them. I hate it when you're in the middle of a manoeuvre and want to turn the volume down and the steering wheel is out of level, adding that problem to indicators was just a terrible idea.
You have to realize that in other parts of the world the stalk is highly sought after. Like in Norway where I live, where we have around 6.4 roundabouts per square kilometer. And if you look at Model 3 refresh tests from Norway (like from TeslaBjorn), the "no stalk" is always mentioned as a missing element. The biggest EV market per citizen in the world, who btw loves Teslas, also loves the stalk :)
Stalks are better than buttons. a stalk you can swing by and have a random grip on the steering wheel, doesn't matter where. Stalks are just better than buttons for turn signals.
I agree. Also, I know this sounds stupid, but if people can't effectively use their turn signals, this will pollute the fsd data and fsd won't be able to either.
I disagree. I've been using the button turn signals in my 2024 model s and have gotten very used to them. When I have driven my ice car with stalk on roundabouts, more often than not, I didn't signal out of the roundabout because I wanted to keep both hands on the wheel. Additionally, I've been driving more and more with fsd. That does the signaling for you.
@@marktiede2710 Indication on FSD is fine, and the way forward, meanwhile whilst there is still a lot of manual driving in this transitional period, messing with a proven technology like stalks is just nonsensical. It's less of an issue for the USA where-by many turns have filter lanes and most states don't have roundabouts. In countries with older smaller road systems with many roundabouts, trying to signal an exit whilst the wheel is turned and the buttons are now back to front is an unnecessary distraction.
In New Zealand where we have lots of roundabouts we are required to signal entering and leaving the roundabout; we would find buttons very difficult and possibly dangerous. The most common view is with no stalk most would not buy the car. We can order now for delivery in May.
The thing with the cybertruck is you never have to turn the wheel completely over so it's easier to keep your thumbs on the turning signal buttons. But that's not the case for Model 3 and Model Y so a stalk is so much better.
Jason Cammisa: Tesla “The lack of stalks is just stupidity”. A lot of people won't buy the refresh Model 3 because it doesn't have indicator stalks. The Cybertruck can work better without a stalk because of the steer by wire & rear wheel steer and you don't have to turn the steering wheel a lot to go round roundabouts. Here in the UK and Europe we have a lot more roundabouts so indicator stalks are essential.
Re-introducing the stalk is an intelligent move in my view. Simple and clean does not always mean removing some features that are essential for safety. They probably kept it after realizing that.
John, I think they kept the stalk in because it doesn't have steer by wire like your CT does. It works for the truck but not the others W/O steer by wire.
John - I usually agree with your observations about Tesla cars. However, I had a visceral reaction against your visceral reaction against the stalk in this video! I am much more concerned with safety than I am about interior style. The lack of a stalk in traffic circles, roundabouts, and whenever you have a series of quick turns makes a driver tend to say the heck with it when it comes to using turn signals. This is definitely a bad thing. If they’re not going to put a stalk on the car, then they could at least put a tactile and visual differentiator on one of the buttons to make it easier to use when the steering wheel is upside down. In fact, that’s a project I have in mind for my 2024 model 3.
Thanks, Doc. I imagine that the button left and right turn signals are more suited to the cyber truck with its drive by wire set up. Good thought that destruct might be removable in the future.
So glad they listened and kept at least one stalk. Now our second car will be another model Yp. When they remove the steering wheel will this know it all tell us steering wheels are ugly?
7:11 I can see why they did this in their best selling vehicle, for now. The CT stalkless implementation is perfect, because of steer by wire. But not as great in the new Model 3 (or the Model S/X), because no steer by wire. Once SBW comes to all models, stalks will go away forever.
We had about an inch of snow in MN yesterday and my Y’s first snow. The RWD handled like a champ even going up the hill west of lake Harriet. Love your content. Many thanks
A stalk just work better for turn signals than buttons on a steering wheel. On my way home I regularly need to cross a staggered junction (I live in the UK so using UK terminology). That means I have to drive up to a T junction, turn left and then immediately turn right. So I signal left, drive up to the T junction, wind on left hand lock as I start to make the left hand turn, then once I'm half way round the turn I have to unwind the left hand lock and immediately start to wind on right hand lock for the right turn. This means that I have to signal right whilst turning the steering wheel. With a stalk it's easy, as soon as I start to unwind the left hand lock I hit the turn signal to indicate right. With steering wheel buttons not only is the right indicator button in a different location, it's literally a moving target! I've heard people say they learn how to do it but i) I doubt they could do the right turn indication as early or as reliably as I can do it with a stalk, and ii) I could probably learn how to juggle whilst riding a unicycle, but why should I? What benefit is there in replacing the indicator stalk with steering wheel buttons? I don't think the Cybertruck comparison is valid. As I understand it the Cybertruck is steer-by-wire. I believe the steering ratio is speed variable so it's a "quicker rack" at slower speed. If so you can probably make a 90 degree turn without moving your hands off the wheel, so your hand is always close to the buttons. The Model Y retains conventional steering, with something over two turns lock to lock even at slow speed, so you have to move your hands away from the buttons.
Decades of driving brings an intuitive sweep of the hand to activate the turn signal indicator. I prefer the stalk on my Tesla S and would definitely want a stalk on any future model Tesla that I may buy.
In my country - and most of Europe - every other junction is a roundabout. Without a stalk it's not just a hassle to find the indicator button on the wheel, it's downright dangerous ime. My guess is that Tesla lost a lot of sales and is backtracking on their decision.
The stalk is useless with the yoke since the left hand is always perfectly positioned for the thumb to precisely hit the buttons. On the other hand, the buttons are terrible on a regular steering wheel because the left hand has to reposition itself to find them and no one drives in the 9 to 3 position with a round steering wheel.
I love my stalkless highland but I understand the buttons are not for everybody. Most would prefer stalk for signalling. Especially in places with lots of roundabouts.
The reason the stalk is returning probably is that from 2026, Euro NCAP will deduct points if safety features like stalks are missing. So thank Europe for the returning stalks.
They added a stalk because they dont want to lose sales i drive over a roundabout every single time i drive every time i drive i start indicating direction with my steering wheel completely upside down

I know Tesla is designing their cars so it's fully autonomous but they should remove those buttons after it's autonomous not before since it's going to be 5-10 more years before Teslas are actually autonomous.

The stalk is on wrong side for RHD. It's just the LHD setup slid over UK style. I don't know why they don't design a symmetrical stalk mechanism that can be rotated 180° and mounted on the other side. Doing this even retains the correct switching for each indicator direction.
I’d be curious to know if Cybertrucks that struggled in snow had winter tires on. Here in Duluth any truck does worse than cars because they are much heavier and have are harder time stopping once they start sliding around. My Highlander is just garbage in the snow, even in ‘snow mode’, however slapping on Blizzacks turns it into a true snow machine.
Thanks John for sharing. Yes the new Model Y looks good. I wonder if Tesla were to offer a stalkless option in the configurator like maybe a squircle, how many people will go for it.

What a joke. “All these improvements increase range”. The range improvement is pathetic! The new Model Y should have 400 miles of range at the base model. Such a disappointment. All the other features are nice. Not sure why Elon thinks that the US doesn’t want more range. 🤦♂️

I woudn't buy a car that doesn't have an indicator stalk.
Cybertruck is different because it has steer by wire
XAI560K is getting ready to skyrocket to the moon
Cylon? It looks more like Maximilian from THE BLACK HOLE...
What a joke. “All these improvements increase range”. The range improvement is pathetic! The new Model Y should have 400 miles of range at the base model. Such a disappointment. All the other features are nice. Not sure why Elon thinks that the US doesn’t want more range. 🤦♂️
The waste of battery is a result of increasing range to 400 and the car becomes heavy.
hopefully blinker stock is back!!! Your reflection is totaly stupid!!
Just another car.....
Your 60?
