      Hey Rembo, that came as a complete shock! This is definitely NOT your fault. I think it’s definitely gravel & being an industrial area it most definitely is spilled diesel that doesn’t evaporate like spilled petrol. It leaves an oily residue. That was a descent whack!

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn 3 месяца назад +3

      There's no oil, diesel, or gravel. And you go down before the drain holes, and its not as though it was sweet anyway, or that you were braking hard up to an apex on stone cold brand new tires. It's a mystery. The only conclusion I can think of is either the mechanic wet mad with chain lube and it dripped all over the tires (which were new and cold to compound that), or a salesman went liberal with the silicon spray, aa common showroom trick to make new bikes look glossy, shiny, and appealing - but doesn't mix well with rubber. Either way, don't crucify yourself over-analyzing. I've ridden 500k, ridden maybe 350-400 bikes, and owned 40, and after much training (Dakar, WSBK, Police), I've still no idea what caused it. The main thing is you are going to be okay. And life is too short to waste pondering over intangibles. Glad you'll be fine and will continue to ride. It'll make me treat my collection of a new GS13 Opt 719 tomorrow with a little more respect!

    I got to tell you Rembo, I don’t see a mistake on your part. The transition to the turn and the turn itself is smooth as silk. This makes your crash all the more scary because there’s nothing to “correct” in the future. You are a strong man for your self evaluation, sharing, and discussion of getting back on your bike again. Good on you Rembo. Get yourself healed up.

      I second this. The worst thing is not knowing why you crash; because then you can fix it. I have no idea about your crash. I know a guy who runs sandpaper around the edges of his new tires before he gets them put on; this looks like super slippery, brand new tires.

    • @ImNoTourist
      @ImNoTourist 16 дней назад

      The bike must have new tyres on it, all I can think of is new tyres need scrubbing. They are pretty slick in the first 100 miles of use. There are wet patches on the road so it could be the tyres were slightly wet from a damp section a few yards prior and that added to the already slick new tyres, can deffo cause that.

    The tires on the scrambler have high sidewall, are knobby and were new. My guess is with that bike you have to ride it with very little lean - especially considering the tires were cold and new. Glad to see you upright making a video. Get well and thanks for posting…

    Rembo, buddy you are tougher than nails. So glad you’re on the mend and have not lost that positive outlook on vlogging motorcycles. On a side note, I’m waiting for my Klim Ai-1 airbag vest to be delivered today. What sold me on it is that it’s an electronic algorithm airbag. I’ve read where it will deploy quicker than you can blink. Also, the battery canister is positioned off to the side of your back and not directly pressing on the spine. One downside is that you have to pay a monthly or annual subscription to keep it active. But with that comes software updates ensuring that you always have the latest, greatest and safest technology. I’m in no way associated with Klim, just a consumer who did his research and shop comparison.

    Total guess here...
    It is impossible to tell how much pressure you put on the front brake from the video.
    I think a combination of new/cold tires and the initial application of the front brake after the bike was already leaned over significantly, caused the front tire to tuck.
    Under normal circumstances you should be able to do what you did here and not crash if you have a very light touch on the front brake...I have done this myself with no crashes using a light touch on the front brake, though it is not ideal.
    When trail braking you want to apply the front brake before leaning the bike over. This allows the suspension to compress and weight to go to the tire before you also put additional traction stress by leaning over. The combination of a new and stressed tire at lean might have made it through but the additional stress of the front brake was the final straw.
    Glad you are recovering and want to learn from it...I have been in the same shoes in my riding career as well.
    Get well,
    Kevin

    • @RemboUSMC
      @RemboUSMC  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, I am very perplexed, which is why I’m just blaming myself, but I know I did not grab the front break. Even if I did, I’m very light on the brakes and nothing like that would’ve ever happened under normal circumstances.

    Enduro-type thread + slick new tires (still have residual release compound to be worn off) + sharper turning radius = front end washout. I've always been warned to take it easy on new tires, especially with lean angles, until the release compound is worn-off (typically 100 miles of riding).

      Do they even use the release compound on modern tires anymore? I know on all the street tires I've ever used they moved away from a release compound years ago because modern molds don't need it. I've taken sticker tires and gone edge to edge on them within a 0.5 miles and it's not been an issue. The manufacturer's reps I've talked with pretty much all say the same thing, they still recommend the 100 miles only because you're coming off an old squared off tire onto a new one with a proper profile and it'll feel a lot diferent.

    Wow! That really shouldn't have happened.
    I low sided back when I first started out, due to old tires, flat spotted and cutting too wide and on the outer gravel lane outside of a corner. Didn't injure me(gloves, helmet, jeans, high top shoes and leather jacket), at 35ish mph but it totally killed my confidence in bikes for awhile.
    Perhaps there was some oil on your tire or something?
    I would not have expected that many serous injuries either at such a low speed with proper gear. Broken collar bone at most, I would think.
    Hope you have a quick recovery!

    Sorry about your crash mate. The video does not show anything out of ordinary. Just a regular turn not much of a lean angle and then the fall. It sucks really, I am glad you was not on a heavier bike.
    Did you slide all the way to the curb and hit it or were all the broken bones just from the fall?
    I've been riding track for a few years now and had my share of crashes. I am 37 and so far managed to walk away even from high speed ones.
    It's scary to put things into perspective and see how fragile our bodies can be.

      I wasn’t anywhere near the curb when I fell. I crawled back to the curb. At 30 miles an hour with an abrupt fall that had almost 0 lean angle, it wasn’t like I low sided at the track around the corner and just slid. This one was completely awkward and just hammered me into the ground unexpectedly. I’ve been fortunate my whole life with every accident to not really get injured so this one was quite the setback because, there was no expectation that anything was gonna happen. Thanks for posting and reaching out.

    Rambo, I wish you a speedy recovery, and am glad to hear that you are planning on using an airbag. Last September I dropped a wheel going around a curve on a mountain road resulting in a high side that launched me at least 10’ in the air, landing on my face and shoulder. I was wearing an Alpinestars Tech 5 airbag. I ended up with a mild concussion, and a torn ligament in my thumb from the handlebars. Without it I suspect I would be in worse shape than you. I won’t ride without it.

Result - two broken ribs, a lot of bruises and six stitches in my arm, the bike got shipped back to the UK on a pallet and was never seen again. Like you, don't really know what happened. The main lesson is yep, travel insurance can be expensive but never go touring without it! I had a Diavel V4 but had to change that after a tour to Morocco! Watching the video, I just can't see where any rider input was significant enough to cause this. My instinct is new tires are even "worse" than we think they are. Scrub in may even take longer than we think base on past experience. Another thought is there was some contaminating fluid (residue) on the front tire that was there from being wheeled around in the shop. I had a bicycle that had some silicon lubricant on front tire, small patch, that the bike was pushed through in the garage. What a shock to me when that front washed out. I was going 3 mph walking speed but still really twisted my knee and strained my wrist.

I had a similar experience on a slow bend immediately after fuelling because tyres had been leaned over, resting on the diesel residue patch of all the other spilled fuel whilst I was filling up, and the first turn I encountered, both wheels slipped in exactly the same way.

I think the tech air 7x has more ventilation and both street and race mode. Since you go on the track that would be my recommendation.
    PS not sure what you did wrong. I suspect gravel or something on the road. Also with a lighter bike I find there is not enough grip in front wheel until you are on the brakes pushing the front tire down. Like all the smaller cc 300 lb bikes

I believe you’ve already hit on the majority of the causes for your crash. unfamiliar bike, cold new tires (likely 80/20 ADV tires), and likely some frictionally-challenged pavement in that RH corner was enough to overwhelm the front while trail braking in that turn. While no one is perfect, I’ll assume that since you’re an experienced track and street rider that you didn’t grab the lever and that you properly set the front with your initial brake squeeze. You did state it was 2-finger braking which would normally be perfect for trailing the brakes.
    My recommendations, besides upgrading your gear to include an air vest/jacket, is to ensure that both the tires and yourself are warmed-up and ready to go. On new tires I’ll do gradual swerves to help warm/clean the tires, and I’d do gradual circles in a pkg lot in 2nd gear at relatively low speed (15-20mph) with progressive lean until I scrub the tires to their edges. Repeat on both sides. Easy and slow is the key. The older BRC curriculum had this as a riding exercise with two constant-radius arcs painted on the range to form a small oval “track” which I used to scrub all my tires.
    When starting out on each ride, I basically do the old ERC Ex. 1 which was just a warm-up and weed-out for my students: slow weaves (constant speed, 2nd gear, no clutch) with two (and even one hand) on the RH grip…warmup for you). You can add slow friction-zone weaves as well,. This serves to warm and clean the tires, although LEO’s aren’t amused and may think that you’re waiving to gain their attention for assistance (ask me how I know). I do this slowly on an unoccupied 25mph road. After a while, I’ll add quick stops (no one is behind me). When I’m sure my tires are warm/clean, I add swerves to the mix, using manholes or pavement markings as bogeys to avoid. Within 15mins (extremely low temp weather not-withstanding), my tires are warm/clean, and so am I. I find this ensures that my bike and I are ready to ride, and I know I can avoid an obstacle via swerves or quick stop braking. If I don’t do this, especially after any period off the bike, I find that my riding isn’t sharp as my basic skills have mild rust and not where they should be after nearly 40yrs of safe riding, and 20 yrs teaching same.
    II’ve recommended this to all my ERC/ARC students over my 20yr teaching career. I know it sounds simple and/or tedious, but like doing a TCLOCS pre-ride inspection, once you’re used to doing it, it takes no time and becomes wrote habit. Just my $0.02.

      On brand new tires it can 100% happen and has happened to me twice, once when I left the shop and once when I was track prepping my bike and went to bed in the brake pads and had a brand new rear on. Thankfully I caught both but it can most certainly happen on new or cold tires (especially if bike is garage kept or just came out of the dealership floor).

  • @lennstang
    @lennstang 3 месяца назад

    Been there done this. It happened to me on a brand new bike also. It was the surface rubber on the tires from sitting in crate during shipping. The tires have a slippery coating on them until they break in. The dealership swapped the rubber out for me at no cost and the bike was fine after that. Most of your turns up to that point we're all left turns. The point at which you crashed, was the first right turn while you were filming. I bet the tires on the bike are the culprit.

    • @RemboUSMC

      Was it a traffic circle that you were entering? If so, that's exactly how I crashed. I entered a traffic circle and started turning left and the bike just came out from underneath me. With a chain drive 400cc engine, at this low speed to lose the front like that, could be low air pressure in the tyre and (only you can answer this second reason ) a little too much break on the front wheel and third , the Tyres weren’t heated enough because you were about to begin the ride. couldn’t recognize any slippery matter in the ground but it could be also a reason, didn’t detect the Tyre giving or sliding , nothing. Absent a mechanical failure locking the front wheel, it appears that you may have been more focused on speaking about the bike than piloting it and while already partially leaned into the turn it appears that you refocused on the turn and instead of increasing your lean angle you instead quickly turned the handlebars slightly and that’s when the front end tucked under you. As the end of the video shows when the camera is parallel to the road, the surface is exceptionally smooth, with an almost polished appearance. I believe these 2 factors (momentary loss of focus then a corrective action, along with an exceptionally smooth road surface) caused the accident. I agree with your assessment. I wouldn't be so quick to blame new tires. I always get a kick out of reviewers testing new bikes. They'll nail the throttle to test acceleration. Then they'll slam on the brakes to test the mighty Bimbos. Then they'll "be cautious" going around corners. If the tires stuck with the engine WFO and the bike stopped w/o sliding all over creation, the tire has plenty of grip to go around corners.
    If anything, the lack time to build a little heat in them may have contributed.
    Worse, I don't particularly like all the race advice people are given to ride on the road. This idea of trail braking all the time is unnecessary and dangerous. As you mentioned, streets aren't manicured like race tracks and a little sand or oil could easily be the difference between tucking or not. And then there's the mighty Bimbos all these bikes use now that are complete overkill. Riding well is about riding smooth. Making smooth transitions on the controls requires modulation. If you got half an inch of travel in the lever, why not have the brakes get progressively stronger over 1/2 an inch? Why would anyone prefer everything reacting like a light switch?
    If one feels the need for a little extra stability in a street corner, maybe try a dab of rear brake. That won't tuck the front and the rear stepping out is ever so much easier to save.

    First of all, get well soon, it's a sad situation. The problem seems to be largely related to the tires. The physical structure of the tire and its coldness may have been effective. When the tire is cold, it is necessary to turn slower and use the counter technique. At a certain point, it is as if you suddenly pulled the right side towards you, you did not pull the handlebar with the same acceleration, in fact, if you had pushed the right handle forward while turning right, you could have turned with the same acceleration.

    @Jedz123 3 месяца назад

    Oof , So sorry man. Those situations never feel good. Looks like the tire just said, "welp I don't feel like griping right now" which makes me wonder if it was a combo of improper scrub in and picking up some oil or diesel contamination on the road just prior. Im going with: Gave it throttle and unloaded the front tire right when it needed grip the most in that turn in before the apex. Curious as to what tires and pressure was in them? Could be that with adventure style tires having a much stiffer carcus and sidewall they gave up traction in cornering for stability off road. Were they hot yet? Suspension a bit light in the rear for your weight maybe, that would definitely exaggerate the front being unloaded on acceleration and further limit the likely stiff adv tires abilities to grip onnthe side in that corner. Idk just thoughts.
    Could have been an angry ghost.

At one point you call out that the bike is taller which you wouldn't have noticed if that was your normal bike. Also, it kind of looks like you were very close to the yellow paint stripes just before the turn. Entry looked fine and no ridiculous lean. Normally only a good handful of front brake or panic braking could cause that so I'm thinking gravel (can't see it in the video) or those shitty tires which maybe weren't up to temp, but that's usually only a serious problem in Winter so hard to tell.

    You're Right, a tethered Helite probably would not have gone off. However, it all depends where the attachment to the tether is on the bike. But don't rule out a Helite vest. I own Both, a Helite and a Tech-Air5.
    The Tech-5 , even though you have about 40 hrs of charge, you do have to track it on the app. and make sure before you ride, what your state/% of charge is. And even though it's a proven system, there's always in the back of my head thinking, "Will this thing deploy if I really need it" ??
    The Helite is Analog, it's fool proof, if 60lbs of pull force is on the tether, it WILL go off. And Helite can be re-charged and ready to go by a simple 60 Gram C02 swap.
    But like I said, I own Both. I usually wear my Helite when I ride my Triumph Rocket-3R, and I wear my Tech-5 when I ride my Ducati Monster in the Twisties.

    Rembo look just B4 U start the turn in there is either Oil or Diesel fluid on the street just to your right. Get well soon and get out of Florida to many distracted drivers in that state.

    I’m no expert but to me it looks like there had to be something on the road. I’ve done countless demo rides on new tires 100x more aggressive than that turn and never have come close to the front end tucking like that at such a slow speed. I have hit oil at about that same speed and have had instant front tire slide, luckily I saved it. Regardless, sorry that it happened, don’t beat yourself up, but good learning for us all. Heal up bud, glad it wasn’t worse. Get that airbag!

    i'm curious, did your vest have rib protecton? motorcycle vests seem to have elbow and shoulder protectors by default but not much at the rib area. it's such a vulnerable spot too.

      I was not wearing an airbag vest, which is going to change before I ever get on a motorcycle ever again.

    The roadway looked okay, but of course that can be deceiving. I didn’t hear you add throttle, but it does seem that, as you were already turned/leaned-in and saying “nimble, look at it,” you subconsciously added lean angle. For some reason, possibly the the fact that the tires were brand new and perhaps not conforming to (gripping) the asphalt surface, I think the additional lean angle forced the front tire beyond its traction limit. I’ve only crashed once on track and it was from introducing lean on cold tires, which is an extremely common mistake. (The difference is that my Arai full face helmet, gauntlet gloves, and two-piece leathers let me get away with just a sore thumb. All of my gear was scuffed, scraped or torn, but completely did its job. )
    It’s great to see you out of the hospital and back in your garage. Kudos!

      I definitely think you are onto something. I do agree that it appears as though I added some additional linking angle. The issue is it was an insignificant amount of lean angle for my typical writing style on almost any bike. It’s just caught me by surprise and was completely unexpected. Thank you very much for posting and sharing your thoughts.

    What a list of injuries! Happy to see you are positive and on the way to recovery. Thank you for sharing the video, not everyone would have, hats off to you for that.
    Obviously the front washed out at approx 25 - 28 MPH, hard to tell why. You had an initial lean in, then it seems you added a little more lean, as you did that, the front washed out.
    Did you move your body causing the front suspension to have a change in load while leaning and or while adding more lean?
    Did you still have some slight brake pressure on while going into the initial lean? Did you let go of the break pressure and then lean more or did you lean more with the same slight pressure?
    Very odd sequence of events. Can't really see what your brake hand is doing.
    They say the speed 400 is the better handling when compared to the 400X. Nevertheless, your speed doesn't seem excessive at all.
    There is a discoloured patch of tarmac at some point on the video before the accident but it looks dry and not recent. You went through some shaded area also before the turn, could tree sap be an issue? The road looks clean enough IMO no sand or gravel that I can make out.
    Tire pressure?
    Hard to put a finger on it.

      I did not lean my body in that one at all because it was just a simple turn while I was talking. When I went framed by frame, I did see my fingers come up may be in preparation, but I’m still bewildered as to why this slammed down so easily.

    All of us can postulate about what caused this. Unfamiliar bike, new tires, etc. You are very specific about how many fingers are on the brake lever, how 'little' you pressed, gravel on the road, etc. A single where you let off the throttle can have enough engine braking to tuck the front end, even without brakes. But the real issue is how you can protect yourself when you do crash. I own and wear an air vest as often as I wear my helmet. Meaning ALWAYS. Glad your injuries aren't so serious that it changes how you live, meaning as a paraplegic. Heal well, and learn from your mistakes.

    I don't get it. You weren't speeding and the corner wasn't sharp. I almost wonder if something was wrong with the bike or if there was oil on the road. Really strange. I better check into air vests too.

      Air vests are an absolute necessity. Lesson learned. As far as the bike going down, we just can’t seem to figure it out.

    At 3:08 something stained the road just before the intersection. A very thin film of trans, hydraulic fluid or coolant could easily made this happen.
    I see no other reason for it. Your riding mechanics are well within your limits. You have logged too many miles for you to not have spidy sense when your pushing the limits. I don’t think you second guess yourself further
