  • 1,000 kilometres south of Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, lies Caño Cristales. From June to November every year, this unique river turns red.
The stunning colours are due to a plant: the Macarenia clavigera. Like some other plants or fruits, it contains, in addition to chlorophyll, carotene. When activated by the sun rays, this pigment gives a red pigmentation to the plants which, in turn, paint the river in flamboyant colours.
But this ecosystem is very fragile. Its main threat is humans because it can get badly damaged just by people trampling on the areas where the roots are. That is why this river can only be visited with a licensed guide.
