As an owner of RTX 3050 35w 4gb varian Acer Swift X, I verified this as a valid comparation. No denial that RTX3050 35w 4gb varian, is now toe to to with IGP. Back then my gpu approximate performance was midrange dedicated gpu every GTX1650 supper or GTX1060 or RX580, RX5500m or RX6500m, and now i can ads another approxinate, an IGPU. So sad actually.

Just wait for Strix Halo, that's estimated to be as fast as a 4070( none super), I have doubts on the 4070, but I can see it being about as fast as a 4060 due to it's 8533Mhz LDDR5 256bit memory as that would be about the same about of bandwidth 17gbps.

Well, the RTX 3050 Laptop 35W variant is basically equal to a GTX 1650 Laptop GDDR6 50W.
Pretty sure you can get very close to these results on a GTX 1650 Laptop GDDR5 50W with memory overclocked through the roof (mine did +999MHz memory fine but +1000 was unstable, with +150MHz core clock), though the memory bandwidth is still lower than the stock GDDR6 version (we talk 128GB/s for GDDR5 variant at stock vs. 159.8GB/s with my overclock vs. 192GB/s for GDDR6 variant).
But the fact is that a GTX 1650 Laptop GDDR5 version still has faster memory than any iGPU on any LPDDR5X speed with a 128-bit memory bus when overclocked correctly, and it currently is what bottlenecks these iGPUs the most since they have the same theoretical raw power as a GTX 1060 6GB (which is anywhere between equal and 15% faster than the GTX 1650 GDDR6 when both aren't VRAM-constrained).
Switching to a 256-bit bus on the iGPUs would solve that bottleneck, but the costs are gonna go way high up and we must remember the GTX 1070 is still about 30-40% faster than the 1060 6GB, meanwhile we get about a 40% improvement going from the latest Vega iGPUs to the Radeon 890M in 5 years (with 2 different generations of dGPUs inbetween, for which we got about +100% performance going from GTX 1060 6GB to RTX 3060 Laptop 6GB 115-130W).

what's the point of this on a mini pc when u can put a 4050 with different wattages, electric bill? 75w gpu + 45w cpu vs 65w amd apu is not like a massive difference, and surely a decent mini pc can dissipate enough heat for that.
a 4050 75w is like 3 times the performance of this igpu and can cost even less money than the apu seeing current price
4050 is a dream budget card, if only they'd put 8gb vram would've been the 1060 of the laptop gpus xD
this apu is for handheld or for a guy who want all in one device and don't want to buy a laptop then a console or pc etc, so you have a fancy ultrabook with oled that can play games at from casual to average levels.
But i can't see someone buying a laptop with the ryzen for the sole purpose of gaming, like wtf xd

    • @Hubwood
      @Hubwood  2 месяца назад +2

I can explain all of that:
      1. One is an Nvidia card the other an AMD
Card. These two handle Vram differently and in some cases one uses more vram than the other. Even if both would have 16GB of Vram
      2. The 3050 only has 4GB so it cannot use more than that. Meaning in some cases the 890m can use more than 4gb
      3. The bigger the available vram the more Vram a system will reserve/allocate
      4. If VRAM is the bottleneck the game actually DOES start to look different.
      5. Since they use completely different drivers there can actually be differences in quality
      6. The 3050 recordings are a bit older. As stated in the video. I might also have recorded them with a different video quality

There's one advantage of a dGPU - It splits the thermal load. Managing 28+35w is easier in a slim chassis than managing 50-60w coming from one spot. It usually leads to two kinda-hot spots vs one super hot spot, that could maybe burn a lap.

    • @_iczyzy
      @_iczyzy 2 месяца назад

It doesnt change much.. Depends on the design of the laptop. If the same heatpipes run on the cpu and gpu, they will reach equilibrium at some point and will be the same. Thats my case, my laptop has a mx570 (basically the same performance as this 3050, little less because runs on 30w), and it gets HOT, because it uses a intel processor, that is still on 10nm. So, thats more important. The ryzen consuming 60w alone can be cooler than my laptop that has cpu + gpu separate, because its on 4nm. The energy allocation having two separate dies can be bad too, on some applications it doesnt work well, and the 890m outperforms alot just because of it.

I have a lenovo legion 5 slim with the amd ryzen 5 7640hs apu on Radeon 760m graphics but also has a nvidia rtx 4060 8gb vram that i paid a awesome deal of $730 for but my main thing is that the nvidia 40 series in a lot of laptops is voltage limited to not go above 100 watts despite the card being rated and sold as capable of hitting 140watts. Some say its not much better performance wise after 100watts butthe point is you wont know this until you test it. That being said i find the amds 760m to be ridiculousy powerful and capable which is surprising given what it is. The 4060 does probably allow me to run around double or triple the frame rates that the 760m allows but the 760m still gets me respectable performance and manages to run every game i throw at it. I cant wait to see what strix halo brings to the igpu realm. My 760m pulls 60warrs regularly and ive seen it spike as high as 80watts, thats insanely high for a mobile platforms igpu!!!!

So, hm, that VRAM limit on the 890M is set to 1GB? In Red Dead 2 at least it looks like. So, while same mempools, the 890 will constantly stream data from system mem to VRAM while the 3050 won't. I'd be curious if setting this to 4 or 6GB would make a difference.

It is design for 28-35w power.
Beyond 35w the improvement is ineligible. There are tons of testing with 780m. It should be the same. Beyond 35w, the cpu n apu will be bottlenecked by thermal throttling. That's the cause of the stutters.
These apu need tweaking for the best result.

P.S. also keep in mind that it's much easier to dissipate 60 watts from 2 different chips than from a single, small chip.

Those two GPUs are now trading blows. However, RTX 3050M is still overall better as 890M is memory bandwidth limited. It tends to stutter badly in games. This then leads to compromised experience and it will feel worse to game on 890M.
The main advantage of APU is its cost. Getting separate GPU from Nvidia is expensive. Getting any non-integrated GPU in your laptop is expensive. Laptops with APUs tend to settle at low prices in the market. 890M main advantage will be its considerably lower cost. However, it will never match performance of an independent GPU. RTX 3050 is a very poor GPU to begin with and it is already almost two generations old. It will be surpassed too and in the market, such old GPUs are being sold on a discount on laptops.
Another advantage is that it sucks less power, it is marginally useful for laptop, because it allows you to game on battery. Though, I fail to see how a normal person will game serious games while being unable to charge their laptop. I only gamed on a laptop like being on a bus. You can't play serious games there. I would fire up Hearthstone or would play some other, simpler, graphically undemanding games to pass the time.

for handheld it would be good, but for laptop, with a 4050 being as low as 600 euros, 700-800 for a decent one (like lenovo loq) and the 4060 for 800, and 900-1000 for a decent one (again lenovo loq, rest are trash at low end) there is no need for this, the 4060 performs exactly like the 4060 desktop, the 4050 performs like a bit lower than a 3060 (2060 super raw performance, but u can get more in new games) that's like 3 times fps (4 times for 4060 or almost) more than a 3050 35w so the same as the 890m
Unless you want a fancy ultrabook with oled display that also play games, so you don't have to buy another device, this is kinda worthless for laptop, and even then, playing 800p in a 1600p oled display is a blurry mess, i had one with this 3050 35w asus vivobook pro oled and the resolutions for reaching 60 (or 90 for competitive, as it was 90hz only) was too blurry for my taste.

In that fps count was higher with settings like 1080p medium/high/very high/some games even in ultra, 890m is not capable of that which can handle 1080p low/medium settings.
Biggest concern is price. 32gb Asus vivobook costs $1700 24gb $1400 while rtx 3050 with 12th/13th gen Intel CPU laptops costs less than $850.
13th/14th gen Intel CPU or amd 7000/8000 series CPU laptops with rtx 4060 costs around $1100. Why would a sane person spend more on this overpriced ryzen 300 series laptops.

To be fair you should try to make a power scale vs perfromance comparison... I guess you can try 3050 at 15-20W, and is there where higher differences will be... to me 50-60w whole cpu is mediocre perfromance whenc compared with too expensive but good Apple Silicon + MacOS optimization... 890M is just +50% RX 6400 refresh, so closer to RX 6500 XT that to RX 6600 in RDNA3 and better 4 nm node... underwhelming but a baby step in the right direction.... and the 128 bit DDR5 ram bus is just a no no no NO for me... gtx 1050 vram max speed bandwidth in 2024? to a claiming 1070 to 1080 ti wannabe igpu....
