I found out about your channel yesterday, and I just started watching this series. I can safely say this is one of the (if not THE) comfiest channels on RUclips. There's nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the waves in this game, very therapeutic. Thank you for your content! I'll be enjoying my time here.
I always remember having oddly fond memories for the type II in SH3. I usually started a new career with them and took advantage to early war blind escorts to do stupid things. Like sneaking into ports to blow up docked ships. One time even snuck a type IID into Loch Ewe and sank one of the Nelson class Batleships there.
This is better than any movie. Always love the attention to detail and immersion, I couldn't hack this game myself but definitely gotten back into Graviteam Tactics as a result of your vids.
So great to see you make a return too silent hunter! It’s what made me subscribe to your channel years ago. It’s amazing to see how far your channel has grown since then. I’m looking forward to this series!
Agree with @jeremyharris9648, @Tonci87 . Just subscribed so I can keep up with your career run with OneAlex's GWX Rework compilation. Am looking forward to seeing the rest of your series run. Gute jagd, ihr Himmelhunde.. 🫡
Story telling is superb on this one! Keep it up please! Glad to see you starting a new campaign on a kickass game!! Also, can't wait for the next episode of Typhoon Rising :)
I love the stories that you put together for the deployment. Real naval simulation is about deployment. With the size of the crew on that sub which is essentially a frigate, they probably run two duty sections. So it is probably not uncommon for them to be on watch for 12 hours at a time. And if the people are at general quarters then no one is sleeping. I feel that many of these naval simulation games are made by people who have never been in a real naval battle. Most battles are conducted just like in this game with just a navigational chart and are highly reliant on instrumentation. I was in the US Navy on a carrier for 5 years. Most times, it is not the captain making the tactical decisions like in the movies. Most times it is the TAO making the decisions or the Tactical Action Officer. In Silent Hunter III they call the position the Watch Officer. The captain is highly reliant on that guy. I do not agree that they did not identify targets with manuals during the battle. They were still doing that up until the late 1980s. The captain has a yeoman for all that stuff. If you watch the movie 'Run Silent, Run Deep," the movie does a really good job showing how important the yeoman was to the captain. The one thing that World of Warships does right is the tactical plot. On most ships, prior to the 1990s, it is a glass in the shape of a square. That is the operational area. It is difficult to describe to people that the land mass in the square is not really relevant to the battle. You want to be able to win the sea battle first and then worry about the land battle. The land battle part is the Marines's function. Our job is to get them to the beach and resupply swiftly. The primary role of the submarine in fleet operations is strategic. They are the forward reconnaissance. They are the ones providing all the data on the enemy movement. In a real simulation of war, the Captain of a submarine will probably not be making the decision to strike offensively. His role would be defensive. The war department would be taking that data and making decisions on what to do. Once a war is declared formally, then the captain's role may shift to offensive, but he would receive orders to do so to avoid a diplomatic incident. The high command will probably blame it on that captain, but they will not give him the glory. In 1938, you had the Nazis to deal with. Also, that is how the military works, blame goes down the chain of command and praise goes up the chain of command. There is a reason why the commanding officer of a submarine is a Lieutenant. He is the lowest guy they can blame. For some weird reason, all those navies with dictators in command never believe in the value of the NCO or Enlisted people. The US and UK seemed to be the only ones who valued the NCO. In the Navy, they call NCOs Petty Officers. The one thing that Silent Hunter does not do right is there is no Chief of the Boat or COB. The captain would be going to the Cob. In Run Silent, Run Deep the COB was operating the ballast tanks and values. So he had to be a Master Chief Machinist Mate. I was kind of joking in the first episode where the crew was already tired and it had only been one hour in deployment. They still have eleven hours to go on watch. That green crew. I have been alternating between Silent Hunter III and Cold Water stories on your channel. It is all fantastic stuff. Thank you.
This mod looks incredible! I'm amazed what the community is able to do with this old game to keep it soldiering on. Great narrative too, looking forward to the rest of the series!
At 11:40 you can see a clever trick where the sea is constructed from multiple planes with their geometry being manipulated by procedural algorithms to produce wave/surf-like displacement, looking like there is a seperate foam layer or multiple layers blending together to produce a more natural-looking seascape. Natural looking water is actually fairly tricky to make right and in a game where you're usually surrounded by that water I imagine they went to great lengths to tune it so it looks good for most sea conditions. If you wanted to learn how to make good video game water you could learn a bunch from dissecting this game and others like it.
I remember watching your tutorials a while ago. Knowing your expertise, i,m looking forward to watch this new adventure and keep learning along the way!
I just discovered your channel about 40 minutes ago from somebody’s comment online and I’m amazed I haven’t seen your videos yet. I was looking for a good SH3 playthrough for ages after watching Wolfpack 345’s one and this tops it already in my opinion, thank you!
Loved this episode and look forward to the rest of the series. This mod is amazing and i hope to see you do more attacks with your hardcore realistic methods of acquiring a target solution :)
This is the best subsim content I've ever come across. I've been watching the whole series, but thought I'd come back to comment on the first video in case someone wanders by and is deciding whether to invest in the whole series. Do not miss this. It's as close as to a Das Boot series as you'll ever likely get. Also - the German accent and narration from @Tonci87 is amazing.
Only just had your video pop up in utube recomendations at episode 51! So I went to your page and I'm starting at ep 1 - that's going to be quite a binge watch and it'll probably take me a couple of weeks to catch up. In the meantime - don't die!
Just found your channel and I'm very much looking forward to binge watching this series and others, your commentary is very entertaining but also relaxing, feels like i'm right there with you every step. thankyou for content!
Wow. Got so invested in the story I was genuinely caught off guard when it switched to normal commentary. Was so into the vid 40 minutes felt like 10. Can't wait to watch the rest of this series and see where they go.
Yes, he is roleplaying a bit but that is historical fact that on the day war broke out in 39 all Kriegmarine commands were handed a file envelope containing orders from wehrmacht party command signed by the krigsmarine command. That the time of peace was over the invasion Poland had begun to the surface navy operational orders to block the North sea from the french and royal navy. The patrol boat and U boat forces deny the sea to allied shipping andthat French navy and Royal navy warships to be sunken on sight; while merchant ships were to be sunken by prize rules meaning ships of the allies or ships of the neutral nations who's merchant ships tried to enter enemy ports such as the british French and other allied ports were to be singled to surrender to the german navy then be searched if they contained military cargo the passengers and crew were to abandon ship and the ship is to be sunk ether by charges or weapons fire if they are not carrying military cargo they allowed to leave. But if the ship runs and refuses to stop from the warning message or even send a sos or to fight back they are to be sunk on the grounds of being a threat to the patrol. this is a summery of the actual document that can be found online.
Loved the intro! A long time coming indeed! I currently have a SH5 campaign at the end of 1940....looks like I will need to start another campagin using the GWX Onealex mod and follow your rules of engagement : ) I have another version of the GWX, so might need to fiddle about with the new one first to see how it differs, but the sub interior shots etc look great ( loved the uboot tour in the intro as well!). I was actually on the edge of my seat when you fired the torps as I really thought they would either be blindgänger or run too deep as they often did early in the war.... Tja, es wird sicher eine grossartige Kampagne Herr Kaleun!
Awesome. This looks like a really good start. Looking forwards to see you being promoted to a VII, though. Also, you might want to do something about that port propeller at 5:05... That can't be healthy for the boat 😁
Absolutely love this game, was in the middle of a playthrough i started on sep. of 39 and am at jan. of 43 and this playthrough got me to start my own type 2 playthrough. :)
Guah me encantan tus videos amigo. Gracias al traductor de youtube y a tus conocimientos estoy aprendiendo mucho sobre este juego y disfrutándolo más que nunca pienso ver esta serie entera. Gracias por estos magníficos videos e historias tan inmersivas. Un saludo desde España. (Wow I love your videos dude. Thanks to the youtube translator and your knowledge I am learning a lot about this game and enjoying it more than ever I plan to watch this entire series. Thank you for these great videos and immersive stories. A greeting from Spain. Sorry for the translation... haha)
Radar is coming in now. So it will soon be the great doom. Around august '43 is when many crews sorta just... dissappear. That by the end of the War only something like 25% of all sub crews survived. So if he is to die... it'll be the next patrol after the current one, most likely.
Dude you just landed a new sub! Its criminal that you have soo little! Im glad I found out your channel as Im never able to fully enjoy SH3 with mods due to various reasons (most common is installation ones and not having the same result as in the videos). Currently using SH4 with the Ace mod and so far so good except that torpedoes are missing their targets (auto targeting). Happy hunting Herr Kaleun!
Happy to have found this series! I have fond memories of Silent Hunter III. I also remember starting with a Type IIA in 1939. But the short range was so annoying, with BdU sending me to patrol off northern Scotland. I experimented a lot with different engine settings to find the most fuel efficient setting for maximum range - I think I found it to be with only 1 engine running at standard speed, without recharging batteries. What's your most efficient setting?
And so it begins! :) I will watch a bit. I had changed my play style to go submerged at night or day time zero visibility. I found at AHEAD SLOW, 12 hours under only requires 10 minutes to ventilate the boat (that is enough to time to surface with a sound contact; refresh air/dive). 12 hours ahead slow takes about 12-13% battery, and requires about 4 hours recharge (no snorkel yet). I was having great fun hunting in the shallows around UK (only turning on the ASDIC mod in 200M of water or less). BTW, 14 hours was around the longest you can do without tapping into your compressed 02. I agree this will probably be a more exciting video series than CW-EPIC, for a single class the play gets very repetitive. I wish you luck to be alive in 45! :) AKA MarkShot
@@Tonci87 The problem with UBoat sims to survive, you have to go to the far reaches to hunt the lone merchants. This makes a lot of sense, but all the game play excitement are the convoys. So, if you play total realism and don't pick your own patrols, you will have fun but die. If you pick Africa and South America, you may just live if you survive your transits. What makes Das Boot excellent is he survives patrol and dies in port. Good luck, Herr Kaleun Tonci!
I am living vicariously via your LP. ALEX v1.52 is best UBoat compilation I have ever seen. Before that AOD(DOS). If you have never seen that, I can put a build together for you with all patches and expansions. The DOS version is much better than CAOD. I had many tense moments with it. In terms of escorts hunting/escape, it may have more intensity then SH3/GWX/ALEX. I've retired from SH3 for time. I am too old to invest 2-3 days in patrolling without finding a convoy. I am back to ground combat at the moment where action is always around the corner. This is why is asked for GWX map this morning. If you know where they coded the convoys, you are going to have much more interesting war. Going to sink the Royal Oak? After that the Frauleins will be lining up for a shot with the uber-mensch Kaleun. (How good is your English. Get the pun?)
Interesting to see an early boat like this and the early war ROE. Just makes me wish all the more for the Wolves of the Kaiser mod to actually come out, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.
@@Tonci87 I think i like the character models in SH3 better. They are a bit blocky, but they animate better than the SH5 ones, look directly at you when they talk and it zooms in a bit, makes them feel more alive. And i bet they dont FREAKING stomp around like gigantic apes when you operate the hydrophone EVERY TIME, it drives me up the wall, lmao. Every time i use it and they stomp around like angry teenagers i think, "if this was truly a realistic simulator i could dump you overboard when nobody was looking and say you got caught in a storm".
Oh man i just got really into cold waters a few days ago based off your other series. now you tell me this is available for totally not free I really enjoyed the newer uboat game but it felt more like Das Boot: The Game than a sub sim
Yeah by this point I doubt that U-Boat will ever evolve to a true subsim. You can tell that the devs initially wanted to make a game about crew management in a confined space. I think they were a bit surprised that there was such a demand for a true new subsim.
Love the video excited to binge watch the series. Quick question did you use any additional mods that come with the install I.E negative buoyancy, Atlantic water etc?
Hello!Just found your channel and this series!Great narration!Btw as much as i know the German U boots had a Rcognition book on board! As much as i know it was the Lloyd Register list with all registered freighters on duty during the time and was always updated when possible! And it included silhouettes of the ships!Another btw ..where you from? You sound German!
They had a ship register, but silhouette cutouts were only available for a few selected ships (think Passanger liners, certain huge tankers and of course warships). The vast majority of merchants were build according to their intended purpose all over the world. Having drawings for all of them would require a small library of thick books :D If the germans were relying on such target information, it would have been very easy for the Allies to change the look of the ships.
Starting this series and I noticed you dont have one for SH5. Do you prefer 3 over 5 +WoS, and how would you compare the two? I might pick it up. Love your vids! Edit: I got to the end (;
How did you get the extra sheets in map and radio room? For example in 9:18 you have Prize, Sop, Convoy, Torpedo on the top. I don't have them with 1.52.
Those are part of the Just follow orders mod (gives you historical orders in regards to those topics). I have made a version that works with the OneAlex Edition and will release it soon.
I downloaded the latest version of the mod, but I don't see the same gauges. I don't have that AOB wheel and my stopwatch is the older looking version (doesn't have the colors or ship length). I remember this being part of Magui (I think) but I was told that the default game already has Magui interface. I see one mod that says "Magui 1366 X 768" but I don't have that resolution. Any ideas?
I can only imagine that something went wrong during the installation. make sure to follow the instructions carefully. If you still have issues, then describe them in the OneAlex Discord. I´m sure that we´ll figure it out.
I was planning to start another OneAlex modpack campaign for a long while now, but I am deterred from actually starting one because of the fragility and the bugginess of save game process and subsequent loading of a save.
@@Tonci87 The thing is, I was following those rules as much as I could, but somewhere west of Morocco my save became corrupted. Perhaps some ship or a plane I wasn't aware of was within 50 km of me.
@@RM97800 you can try reloading the save again...that has actually worked for some by trying to load the corrupt save again and then they miraculously got in. Also having multiple saves is key if the last save is corrupt, I also try to never save near land masses by at least 200kms out from them as they usually have air bases near them. Sorry about your lost saves though.
@@RM97800 That is why one of the rules is to never overwrite savegames, always make a new one. If one gets corrupted, you can revert to the previous one.

This is a great series and I'm using your videos as a resources to play out my campaigns, but the only problem is I'm not having NO success with screenshots using CTRL - F11. Has anyone else experiencing this problem? And where is the emblem on the side of the conning tower sourced for this Type-II submarine?
You can find the Emblem in the Upgrade screen in between patrols. This is the Emblem of the first U-Boat flotilla. Usually your GPU software should have a way to take screenshots
Do this mod make it easier to manage crew or you need still to manually move them around? I consider but this or SH 4. Which you think it's best for a newbie?
You can disable the crew management, but I feel it adds another layer of complexity that you need to consider. SH4 and SH3 are more or less equal whwn it comes to the skills you will need to learn as a new player.
Oh snap a type 2! Forgive my ignorance if I am incorrect but was the type 2 essentially a coastal waters hunter? In so much that it lacked the range of its larger compatriots, not to say that it was exclusively relegated to coastal waters (would be quite hard work hunting freighters if that was case lol), just that it's where it tended to operate. Looking forward to this one!
Yes, you are right. The Type II could not be used in the Atlantic since it did not have the range. I´m basically operating at my maximum range in my current patrol (patrol 4)

I simply order the slowest speed setting. That gives you about 5 knots, which is close to the most economical speed for the type 2
New to your channel, I love SH3 play troughs! I like your style of storytelling, I have to catch up on this series.
Great to see a SH3 series on this channel :)
fantastic intro. Better than streaming. thank you
You're awesome keep up the good videos yes I would like to see more videos of these have an awesome day be safe out there
You're awesome keep up the good work be safe out there have an awesome day
And so it begins!
AKA MarkShot
I doubt that I´ll make it to 45. It just gets too brutal past 43, but we´ll see
@@Tonci87 The problem with UBoat sims to survive, you have to go to the far reaches to hunt the lone merchants.
@@mahakleung6992 I´ll follow orders and go where they send me💀
good job, i will follow this journey!!!!
This is most excellent!!
A WW1 subsim would be amazing
Wow, this old workhorse of a game looks fantastic with this mod. Sometimes it feels like it looks better than SH5.
To be honst, if the character models were of a higher quality, you wouldn´t even notice the difference too much
@@Tonci87 I think i like the character models in SH3 better.
@@Coinkidoink 🤣
Oh man i just got really into cold waters a few days ago based off your other series. now you tell me this is available for totally not free
I really enjoyed the newer uboat game but it felt more like Das Boot: The Game than a sub sim
Yeah by this point I doubt that U-Boat will ever evolve to a true subsim. You can tell that the devs initially wanted to make a game about crew management in a confined space. I think they were a bit surprised that there was such a demand for a true new subsim.
@@Tonci87what do you think about the current version of uboat?
@@Njordin2010 It still needs a lot of work
@@Tonci87 and lots of mods :/ uboat expanded for example
Guess I am in for a journey 😎
How´s it going? :D
@@Tonci87 waiting to see what happens next 🙈
Love the video excited to binge watch the series. Quick question did you use any additional mods that come with the install I.E negative buoyancy, Atlantic water etc?
Yes, negative buoyancy, no u mark, Seafloor texture. On top of that Community units addon project and a personal edit of JFO
how do you turn on red lights in uboat?
That happens automatically as nighttime arrives
Excellent!
really enjoying the series, thought i would come back here to ask do you use a voice command program?
No, I don´t
When the dreams become to real 🤗🤗🤗 thank you
Hello!Just found your channel and this series!Great narration!Btw as much as i know the German U boots had a Rcognition book on board!
Having drawings for all of them would require a small library of thick books :D
If the germans were relying on such target information, it would have been very easy for the Allies to change the look of the ships.
@@Tonci87 THx for claryfying! But again..where you from?Ich bin aus Deutschland! Baden Württemberg!
sehr geil!!!
Starting this series and I noticed you dont have one for SH5. Do you prefer 3 over 5 +WoS, and how would you compare the two? I might pick it up. Love your vids!
Edit: I got to the end (;
Realy nice!
Love the new series and OneAlex mod! The tool you have at about 27:10. How did you pull that up? I can't seem to find it.
Make sure that you select the Weapons Officer first, then the tool will be available
@@Tonci87 Thanks! That was it.
Oh wow a Type 2 thats very very different!
...also, amazing video, as always
Great story telling.
Thank you
I was planning to start another OneAlex modpack campaign for a long while now, but I am deterred from actually starting one because of the fragility and the bugginess of save game process and subsequent loading of a save.
There are rules that you should follow for saving games. As long as you do that, you should be fine
What button do you press to close the interface/controls lile you do in your intro?
It is the , button on the number keypad
nice first episode. No idea where the brits found an armed freighter in the first week of the war, has to be a mod thing.
Great video! Do you use all the realism options from the SH3commander also?
Of course :)
i used the map alot in this one, it made it easier
Your accent is ideal for story narration. I think you’ve found your niche.
@Tonci87: The playlist says there are 6 videos, but 3 are not available to me. Is this correct? :)
Thank you, I fixed it, those were the already deleted attempts to reupload Episode 1 when the RUclips Server refused to process the video
@@Tonci87 Thx for clearing up and for the great series so far!

I really like the merchant fleet mod, im recommending it if you want to do another series. especially since you are not using the recognition manual
I´m using it already :)
SH3 is the goat
Do this mod make it easier to manage crew or you need still to manually move them around? I consider but this or SH 4. Which you think it's best for a newbie?
You can disable the crew management, but I feel it adds another layer of complexity that you need to consider. SH4 and SH3 are more or less equal whwn it comes to the skills you will need to learn as a new player.
SHIII was always a superior game to SHV. Only the SHV graphics were better. So glad to see some branching out on the GWX mod
Your accent increases the realism.
how do you get you crew to line up and salute on the deck?
Shift+D
Oh snap a type 2! Forgive my ignorance if I am incorrect but was the type 2 essentially a coastal waters hunter? In so much that it lacked the range of its larger compatriots, not to say that it was exclusively relegated to coastal waters (would be quite hard work hunting freighters if that was case lol), just that it's where it tended to operate.
Looking forward to this one!
Yes, you are right. The Type II could not be used in the Atlantic since it did not have the range. I´m basically operating at my maximum range in my current patrol (patrol 4)
@@Tonci87 Thanks for confirming, also decided to give this great looking mod a try thanks to you. Have been really enjoying it so far!
Can't wait until you get the U21
