You nailed it, been taking Jim's 'Lessons' since day 1. He was the only one I could find who was going at my speed.

Jim Pankey and Bill Nesbitt are the two guys to go to for online tutorials. They each give away everything for free so be kind and throw them some cash if you can afford it (they never mention wanting donations but for cryin' out loud they teach you EVERYTHING you need to know to master the instrument!)
Absolutely go with Jim or Tom Collins. There are many more out there. Pat Costello is another. Good luck !

The problem with cheap banjo reviews on Amazon is that the people that are reviewing them are raw beginners or grandmas that bought them for their grandkids. "Ooo, it's pretty and it was packaged nicely". Is the neck straight? Is it fretted correctly? Does it have a truss rod? How does it sound?
Yeah< I get it. But to just learn it seems ok. After I get my fat fingers to learn to do what I want and can consistently do the rolls properly, It will then be time to upgrade. IMO for a basic beginner it's fine.
I choose a Ghost Town in Idaho for refuge. I was born here and left the larger city.

I have one of these that is about a year old. If someone is ordering one of these, do yourself a favor and order a set of D'Addario EJ55 strings at the same time. Also mine didn't come with a banjo strap, so getting one at the same time will make handling the banjo easier.
Yes indeed Steve, I swapped the strings and got the strap right away. Made for a much better start.

I practiced daily for about 8 months then life got a little too busy. I'm gonna pick it up again, and post an update. Went to contract on a house in Franklin County, it was absolutely perfect for us, but the deal fell through. Still looking and trapped in NY

I was going at it pretty good for about 6 months. Progress was slow, but I made a second video and never posted it. Then life got in the way, and I just have not had time to look at it in quite a while. Hopefully soon.

@@AxlesGarage i feel you there, i've been playing my banjo for right at a year now and i always wish i had more time to play it, once you get Cripple Creek down and start memorizing left and right hand stuff its a pretty damn fun instrument to play

LOL, played every day for about 4 or 5 months, took video for a second one, but never edited it. Life just got in the way. I'll pick it up again, really enjoyed it and my on-line teacher was great.

I was able to get the bridge set up nice and swapped out the cheapo strings with something decent. Now I just need to find more time to practice.

Just a coincidence I was wearing that sweatshirt, while talking about that. My son is a student at Liberty, and I have family in Lynchburg and Radford. I attended Radford Univ many years ago as did my oldest daughter recently, so am a bit familiar with the region. I'm actually looking for something on the lake at SML. Just a semi-secluded lake house were I can be left alone to my garage addiction and a nice chair on a dock to relax.

off topic, but I can't help responding to your non-music commentary. I'm no fan of Cuomo, but if New York was communist you and your family would be in jail the second you posted this. On the other hand, Liberty U was founded on "Iron Fist" theology. Student's would be fined speeding ticket level money for using "un-Christian" words and forced to take this down with threat of expulsion from the college. Keep that in mind when you talk shit without knowing what you're talking about.

When I was there in 2004 they fined ridiculous amounts of money for cursing, R rated movies, not going to convocation, and many other tiny infractions. If you were rumored to have sex you could be brought in, shamed and/or expelled. Faculty members, locals and students reported people to the administration for any rumors.. Those are "Iron Fist" theology similar to Communist China or Muslim countries.
