How to stretch a tire... and how you don't.

- First time we had to use fire to make a tire stretch out.
Stretching 195/45R15s on 9Jx15 BBS RMs.
Didn't work at first, but we got there! (Still not as good as in other videos I have seen, but hey..whatever! It's fun!)
As more and more people cry about handling and whatever when it comes to stretched tires:
These wheels will be going on a stanced out 1986 Scirocco 16V weekend cruiser.
It's meant to look good in the first place, handling just comes second.
Stretching tires that much will make the handling in fast corners worse...normal driving you won't notice any difference though.
On my MKIII GTI, I run 195/40s on 9" wide rims for daily use and meetings, while I run 215/35s on 9" wide rims for track use (see my onboard videos on the Nürbrugring).
215s will just stretch slightly on 9", stiffening the sidewall up only a little, giving you a more direct steering, while still allowing fast cornering.
In combination with harder rubber bushings, more stiff suspension setup and unbiall top mounts, etc.etc. this results in an almost GoKart like, very direct handling...sure not the fastest setup, but fast and fun enough for me.
why do they laugh in english

Use less spray next time. you only need a 1-2 second squirt
We sure did use way too much spray, we'll do better next time! :)
Stefan Shepherd use whole can for 1 tyre
petrol works better
Like your mom
Bro which spray it is?
Nice to hear people enjoying their work.
We have a mounting machine at my shop that is called the Cheetah. It's a lot safer because it clamps the wheel preventing it from moving while releasing 200psi (sometimes) to seat the bead quickly. Always wear eye protection kids.
What i learn? : nothing
Stretched tires... would never have em, but they can look nice on some rigs. Only show rigs though. You get in an accident with stretched tires, and you're to blame, no matter what. In the USA according to DOT regulation your sidewall must be at least flush with your wheel lip to be street legal.
Hey, american, this is not for some "rig" or truck. we drive cars in europe not lorrys.
and you call our fries "chips" who cares? you got what I meant
R33Racer Perfectly legal in Germany.
figures. Germany is so cool.
R.L. Natschke lol really? Cuz americans are so great for stealing land and enslaving TWO different nationalities. We all have skeletons in our closets, but the past is the past. Leave it there.
It worked perfectly for me the first time i tried it. Its very easy. Just dont use very much starter fluid and you'll be just fine.
using WAY too much fluid
Way too much fluid, and they could be inflating from the valve stem rather than shooting air from the outside. Their very first attempt would have worked if they were inflating from the stem when they applied the flame.
@@brehoffm ,
I’m new to this but what’s the fluid being used before lighting with fire??
what fluid they use ? i tries many times and nothing ... just burning and nothing.. anybody help ?
@@lilwill9510 Diesel start, brake cleaner etc. But not too much, like in this video.
For those wondering, I take my MX5 sliding and through hard driving even with a stretch. Not as much as that, same tire size with Achilles ATRs on a 15x8. No problem so far with a over 10K miles of that kind of driving.
The main difference seemed to be tire to rim size proportion. The one on the right had a lot less stretch to do to fit.
It's good lesson to learn about the tires and maintain a good idea with good care.
Thanks. Jagdish

To help clear up some of these people wondering. No stretching tires does not do anything for performance, it actually takes away from performance. Yes, this is extremely dangerous and can lead to unbalanced tires and tires blowing off the bead of the rim under hard cornering. Very silly.
Another way to make this work, put an inner tube inside the tire before u put it on the wheel, blow it WAY up and let it sit overnite. Next day it will be stretched enuff to take air when u put it on the wheel. But it's not as much fun. Enjoyed ur vid, thanks for posting.
Buy the correct size rim to begin with and the tire will fit and your car won’t look stupid
Rodney Litton you definitely drive a Nissan Leaf
To be fair, I like a small amount of stretch but people just take it too far. If you have to get the tyre on using brake cleaner and a blowtorch, it doesn't fit.
All the people bashing stretched tires,it's about the looks...He's not gonna fucking race it or anything.Normal usage of a car and hooning it 2 times in a year is more than enough. If you think that the stance community is all made up of stupid people, you're wrong.Still as a car enthusiast you should keep it to yourself and respect eachother's cars,as we're all a big family in the end...
I don't care for stretched tires personally, but this video is hilarious, and I love those rims.
In 31 years, I've never seen anyone use that much whatever fluid that was. I know guys who do truck tires, can make a can of ether last months. Only need a 1 or 2 second squirt. Have air chuck on valve, light, whoomp, there it is. Spraying that much crap inside then lighting it, it's a wonder you don't have a fire burning inside the tire, but whatever works for you.
Yeh... I have rebeaded a large tire and it doesn't take much. So I thought the same thing but then I wondered about the flexibility and how much more oxygen is in a bigger tire and I wonder. Maybe it takes more because of how much stiffer the tire is per scale. Then again maybe not. Maybe these guys are just wasting a ton of fluid.
They seem like fun guys lol
Sure fun guys if you're choosing to die with them will be disabled with them
Robert Abbott you must live a sad life
Rice-A-Roni & Pasta Roni the rice is real with this one.
That comment coming from a guy who gets off on making his car louder is quite hilarious.
Stefan Shepherd Macaroni
I personally think tires that only have a slight stretch look okay. I don't care much for an extreme look. I understand the purpose of stretching a tire so that it fits underneath a stanced car but it seems a little silly because I could imagine you must go through tires very fast, correct? To each his own I guess.
Exact thing I too am wondering.
Like for super low autos, this would seem perfectly ideal but I can't imagine it would do too well on the track (or even be allowed on the track)
***** streching dosent wear them out any faster its the camber issues from trying to tuck them or not having the suspension properly aligned that wears them out faster then normal. I had wheels and tires with a slight strech on my old 240 and ran it that way for years with no odd wear issues.
there is no inherent proof that stretching tires decreases tire life, BUT you do face the possibility of tread separation/tire error if you drive on them under the correct air pressure. thats also to be said for unstretched tires too though. main +1 to stretching tires is fender clearance. the wear is going to be nominally faster from the decrease in tire circumference, meaning slightly greater RPM than accurate
connor mctigue
not to mention a loss in load rating due to the sidewalls not being close to vertical.
Shit, you'd think at least Germans can afford proper tires for their car...
I guess crisis hit hard, huh.
Stefan Shepherd aww, did I offend you? There, there - no need for tears. By the way - dunno why I expected a wittier retort from you.
Nope you didn't, but you're welcome to try again.

DUDE! That couldve been his fingers instead of the nozzle!
We used brake cleaner or other cleaning sprays... starter spray should work, too. WD40 is flammable, but it's not that explosive. ...and you need something that can get really explosive.
We also made the failure to add way too much spray, less, more well placed spray and more air works way better as it builds a way more explosive gas!
Wd40 isn't flammable
The sound of the laughings is epic!!! Same goes for me as I am watching now. Lol that is a good tricks man.. Love it.
Thanks guys, now running 195/45's on 9j's :')
u only need like an eighth of the amount of ether they used. waste
This isn't my style really but to all the people complaining about the danger of it around the cars and such... Spend a day in a real garage and see how us mechanics treat stuff. In the areas that use salt on the roads and have long winters it's not unheard of to need to use torches and hammers on just about everything. This is far from dangerous and far from anything I'd be worried about doing in any shop.
i actually like how stretched tires look! eventhough i wouldn't put it on my car because i don't know the facts of if its safe to drive 200+ kmph on them. the shape remind me of formula 1 tires 8)
I’m not a fan of stretched tires. But i just have one question : doesn’t it makes it more prone to wear?
Not only more prone to wear, it would invalidate highway insurance as the tyre is not fitted to a matched size wheel as recommended by the tyre manufacturer.
“JA! NEEEEIN!”
“Huehuehuehuehuehue”
Was hab ich mich gerade weg geschmissen!!! GEIL!!!
I hate how judgmental people are. Everyone has their own style. While it isnt for my car, there is no doubt a ton of people including myself think this style is fucking cool looking. Ease up, its not your wheels.
If you want your car to look that way, I don't have a problem. It's your car. But when the stupid tire blows up and you smash into MY car then we have a problem. Roll the fender or get flares, and use the correct freakin' tire for your rim. I don't understand why people these days think that doing things incorrectly is 'cool'.
SuperKONR because all they need is their old Golf mk3, wide rims pulled off a junker and a bit of their mom's hair spray.
Why cant people have opinions on things without bashing the people who take part in those activities/hobbies?
Because this is stupid and unsafe
I could care less. Its just that everyone sis so hostile for no reason.
Bushido Cobra No one here is being hostile. We think that putting a tire too narrow for the wheel is really stupid and unsafe. We don't care how good people think it looks.
+Dylan Greene Most people are being pretty dickheaded about it.
***** With good reason, it's unsafe.
What spray did you guys use? Im gonna be stretching tires pretty soon and would like to know what to use
How to stretch tires
Step 1. Don't
this dude should have a go at trying to stretch crossply tyres xD
why the fuck are you watching this if you dont like stretched tires ?
FiveCurmudgeon9 firstly no one with a functional brain likes stretched tyres, and secondly there is a thing called "recommended videos" on youtube, and sometimes you don't read the title and just watch the video. Also if you think that streched tyres are so cool give us one advantage of streched tyres over the correct size tyres.
1. advantage of stretched tyres ? Fitment. 2 you are being very rude. 3 if you dont like it dont watch it or spread hate, this is why I hate the car community because everyone knows whats ''best''
Boss Dude fuck u
So much hate in these comments, but there's one reason for stretch that nobody realizes. 15 x 10 wheels. To fit with a low profile, you're gonna have to stretch unless you want to spend upwards of $500-600 on tires wide enough for the rim.
Why not just get the right tyre size?
because you don't know what low is
The Badger preach
Its the right size tire to clear the fender...goooo learrrrnnnnn
The Badger
Well, I know the word.
What are you referring to?
a better question would be why the fuck do u need to lower your car so damn much ya damn ricer?
that should get a few a little annoyed lol ;)
I'm curious about how does the ride feels when you're using a stretch tire 🤔?
Not much different, I have stretched tired but I have wider wheels than my oem wheels. It rides good but it would ride close to the same if the wheels weren’t stretched.
My car feels smoother and handles better with better acceleration, more grip too, i’ve driven on long trips with no issues and long trips and 1 went flat; sux
I don't use nearly that much staring fluid, and I remove the valve stem core so it can suck air after and not suck the tire back in so much. but it was 15" and 16" suv tires.
Why are there so many hate comments. Everyone does there own things to their cars. If you don't want it like that, buy your own damn car, tires, rims, and everything else and mod it the way you like. Another point, why watch to argue? Go watch the bullshit you think is funny and go on with your day lmao. They did a good job stretching them tires. Jesus

stretched tire looks so good on the right cars
Your come backs to these comments are funny lol cool vid man enjoyed it.
i will only like this because of the hilarious laughing going on in the background haha
That cackling peanut gallery in the background made the video.
@@johnwilburn 😂😂😂
The only right way is to not stretch the tire at all.
Incorrect.
Greg Ridge
How so?
dunno bout the comments but if you need to seal a bead in the field (on an atv maybe) then it helps to know how to do this. just remember not all rims are created equal. i've seen them blow apart with too much ether. have fun out there
I've always wondered how this was done, and now that I see it I still don't understand. Some cars look great stanced but I always hated seeing the rims extend out further than the tire. I feel like it gives the car a "I couldn't buy the right size part" look, even though I know that it was done on purpose.
Just the laughing audience from the video made this great. :D
tire stretching is old school, its been done with lowriders for decades
That is actually a pretty cool trick XD
Thumbs upped for the description. Very informative.
Tick question, you DONT stretch tires.
cheapo911 need good fitment tho
Ethan Vangster personally don't do it but fuck it if you want then why the fuck not, I go for Performance>Aesthetics
Exactly, just get a wider tire
Laurynas Tamošaitis Exactly, or get a narrower wheel.
I prefer to get tyres that fit, it's a lot easier.
Right, you're not that smart watching a video about tire stretching then.
yea but that would make sense... sorry
Is it still ok for my case ill be using 215/70r16 tires on an 16" 8j et9? I still want handling though not for fast cornering since i will put it on an suv. Also stock rims weight limit i guess is 690kg but the one i wanted to install is rated 620kg. Is it ok to do the swap?
Just for who said they might not allow streched tires on the track... The sidewalls on streched tires have little or no flex , so they are preferred for drifting.
...as I mentioned in the description, I drive slightly stretched tires on the track (215/35s on 16x9s) as I prefer the more direct feel and cornering.
Impressive to watch, but, such a dangerous "trend", I would rather have a fun time carving up the road, pushing my car to its limits on properly fit tires, rather than worrying about accidents and shitty ride quality on stretched tires, functionality beats form in every case.
I bet i can beat you on any road..i got streched tires...
Vgv Customs Niggah please a speed bump would wreck your car don't even talk to me about racing on a road.
someusername121 You must be one hell of a dump ass to A. race on the roads B. race on the roads WITH speed bumps.
someusername121 ill race you
Brandon Semik You look like you are tired of life
i bet ya, half the haters that are commenting don't even drive with stretched tires. instead of insulting on how much they "suck" or what "morons" they are, why don't you just give them advice on how they can do better next time around.
Seriously WTF is the purpose of stretched tires? Or crazy camber?
*****
Well, you shouldn't race on a highway to begin with.
I do 200Km/h+ in my 'hella flush' GTI all the time and push it around the Nürburgring quite often... so no, you are wrong.
Stefan Shepherd Ah-ha! so there is a real reason for this! What are the handling characteristics like? Advantages/disadvantages?
Would it be ok for a GT auto or is this something strictly for the track?
***** you get a way more direct steering as the tire doesn't bend anymore, though it can give you less grip in corners.
215/35s on 9J for example still corner very well, while 195/40s on 9J already handle pretty bad.
That's on the track though. I just daily the 195s and it just rides the same as 215s.
If I would be all about handling, I would rather run 225s on 9J wide rims. or for my Golf probably 215/35s on 8J.
i never knew tire-streching could be so funny!
they realy have fun
why would you want to do this? i know it looks cool and everything, but you have less tire on the road than what you could have. ive got 6 inch rims on my car, but i chose to put 7 inch wide tires on it. more rubber on the road, more traction. im more of a function over form kinda guy though
The Japanese used to do this when they didn't have the right sized tires anymore for drifting so they would just get some cheap ones from the junkyard or something then stretch them, then Americans thought it looked good so they started using it for this "stance" sort of thing but whatever.
Issiah Gordon thats a good reason, but this stance bs is dumb. yeah it looks cool, but why trade grip over a minimal aesthetic thing?
dragonslayer1483 Yeah.
+dragonslayer1483 yea well a lot of people by cars based on appearance .... like lowriders for example.... what possible advantages do you from having a lowrider? this is a style thing. i can see why some people may do this because the point is to have the rim flush with the car body while the wheels tuck in....
milldabeast519 im just a function over form type of guy... but whatever, i can go around a corner faster with the same width rims. i run tires wider than my rim giving me more grip. if i were to lower my car enough to need skinny tires i would just roll the fenders a bit. ive only done a modest amount of lowering on my car so its not a problem
wont the solvents (whats in the spray) damage the rubber?
tpvalley it shouldnt
kyle ford generally solvents make rubber etc decompose; better off with butane gas maybe.
+tpvalley Usually you use ether (starting fluid) for this. The solvent is burned/evaporated off very rapidly, it's not there long enough to hurt the tire. In the video they're using WAY too much (That's why he's having to blow air into the tire before it pops, to evaporate whatever liquid they're using).
+tpvalley tire wont last long enough on the road to matter
+Justin Kady chances are it wont all burn.
The first try really made me laugh out loud. Lol.
Those rims are knackered haha
Why would you even do this?
maybe he had a flat?
Could replay 0:17-0:25 all day long.
After that, don't complain that the the tyre loose preassure . Using flameable substances it will always damage the bead and it will loose preassure. Always use the proper tools for the job, such as the inflator :)
The flame lasts only a couple of seconds and thus doesn't heat the rubber up much. If that would damage the bead, I would not run tyres of that brand at all.
Used to be, we got wider rims so we could get wider tires, more traction, better wear, better braking, higher cornering speeds, better looks. To bad these guys can't afford the wider tires.
I know,,,I know,,, its a style thing.
I guess some are acually wedging the widest rim, tire combo in the fender, but they are making lower profile tires now so you can run the correct "safe" width.
I generally just use the jets on my tire machine
best shit ever , those guys laughing hahahhaha
Nice video man, will come in handy when I stretch my own tires on to my cades alloys :)
Shit that looks fun. Idk about the people bitching about the spray and fire trick when its an older trick used by truckers well before the stretch trend.
Too much lighter/brake/whatever fluid. Clip air chuck on before lighting it, will be easier as well.
Amazing.
i see a vdub in the background c;
I see a nice machine in the background.
even if you're not a fan of stretching ( and i'm not to be honest) .....come on man this is hilarious! and they seem to be having fun with it ..i say god vid
to much spray less spray guys,
0:19 yea X'D
I dunno about all the harsh criticisms and "hating" on the Original Poster of this video. It Seems like a prejudice and envy. Here's my opinion. Stretched tires look kinda cool on alot of rides. The fact that they seem to loose the bead seal easily (as seen in the video) seems like a risk for high speed driving & racing. However I noticed alot of Drifters will run their tires slightly stretched. I read that on a Japanese drifting website for car setup advice. Supposedly slightly stretched tires are easier to drift with. If Drifters are using stretched tires without killing themselves, it must not be too dangerous. I'm not a tire engineer or anything but it seems like as long as the bead has a good seal at the rim lip and there's sufficient pressure in the tire, I guess it holds up just fine.
what where you spraying in the wheel, just something that is flammable or is there a more preferred spray?
what product do you use to do this??
americans use starting fluid 5 sec. shot and have air on stem
But we use petrol for this kind of tyres and rim..
The stretched tire and the excessive camber thing is horrible as is but this is just unsafe. At least take it to a pro and do it right...Jesus Christ
....

streched tires don't fold over when drifting, stock tires bend when your taking tight turns. thats why most tuners stretch there tires it's mostly for drifting an better looks.
+Race Cushing Slight stretch helps with cornering in grip racing as it stiffens the side wall reducing tire roll.
what spray are they using? is it a specific kind you need or just some tire like spray?
sorry but last time i saw someone mount a stretch tire the person used a proper tiremountingmachine not flameable gases and airmixtures...... youre all wrong...

You just killed all respect I had toward German Engineering. I will sent my son to study mechanical engineering in Albania.
It's way better to drive on a twisty road with stretched tyres, the tyre deformation is smaller than the standart tire fitment, the car is more responsive, and if the tire is 195/45 on 9J it is laying on the ground like 205 because of the stretch and the fenders are secure. I drive 195/45/14 on 14x9 steel rims and for now i have no problems, yes i'm driving the tires with 3bar air inside and it's more bumpy but i think that can't be a minus.Making a stretch normaly means that you are too low :D
