How to stretch a tire... and how you don't.

  • First time we had to use fire to make a tire stretch out.
    Stretching 195/45R15s on 9Jx15 BBS RMs.
    Didn't work at first, but we got there! (Still not as good as in other videos I have seen, but hey..whatever! It's fun!)
    As more and more people cry about handling and whatever when it comes to stretched tires:
    These wheels will be going on a stanced out 1986 Scirocco 16V weekend cruiser.
    It's meant to look good in the first place, handling just comes second.
    Stretching tires that much will make the handling in fast corners worse...normal driving you won't notice any difference though.
    On my MKIII GTI, I run 195/40s on 9" wide rims for daily use and meetings, while I run 215/35s on 9" wide rims for track use (see my onboard videos on the Nürbrugring).
    215s will just stretch slightly on 9", stiffening the sidewall up only a little, giving you a more direct steering, while still allowing fast cornering.
    In combination with harder rubber bushings, more stiff suspension setup and unbiall top mounts, etc.etc. this results in an almost GoKart like, very direct handling...sure not the fastest setup, but fast and fun enough for me.

    Stretched tires... would never have em, but they can look nice on some rigs. Only show rigs though. You get in an accident with stretched tires, and you're to blame, no matter what. In the USA according to DOT regulation your sidewall must be at least flush with your wheel lip to be street legal.

    To help clear up some of these people wondering. No stretching tires does not do anything for performance, it actually takes away from performance. Yes, this is extremely dangerous and can lead to unbalanced tires and tires blowing off the bead of the rim under hard cornering. Very silly.

  • @Finnigan9
    @Finnigan9 8 лет назад

    Another way to make this work, put an inner tube inside the tire before u put it on the wheel, blow it WAY up and let it sit overnite. Next day it will be stretched enuff to take air when u put it on the wheel. But it's not as much fun. Enjoyed ur vid, thanks for posting.

    In 31 years, I've never seen anyone use that much whatever fluid that was. I know guys who do truck tires, can make a can of ether last months. Only need a 1 or 2 second squirt. Have air chuck on valve, light, whoomp, there it is. Spraying that much crap inside then lighting it, it's a wonder you don't have a fire burning inside the tire, but whatever works for you.

    • @MrGivmedew
      @MrGivmedew 8 лет назад +1

      Yeh... I have rebeaded a large tire and it doesn't take much. So I thought the same thing but then I wondered about the flexibility and how much more oxygen is in a bigger tire and I wonder. Maybe it takes more because of how much stiffer the tire is per scale. Then again maybe not. Maybe these guys are just wasting a ton of fluid.

    I personally think tires that only have a slight stretch look okay. I don't care much for an extreme look. I understand the purpose of stretching a tire so that it fits underneath a stanced car but it seems a little silly because I could imagine you must go through tires very fast, correct? To each his own I guess.

    •  10 лет назад

      Exact thing I too am wondering.
      Like for super low autos, this would seem perfectly ideal but I can't imagine it would do too well on the track (or even be allowed on the track)

    • @ShabbernigdoXingjian
      @ShabbernigdoXingjian 10 лет назад +8

      ***** streching dosent wear them out any faster its the camber issues from trying to tuck them or not having the suspension properly aligned that wears them out faster then normal. I had wheels and tires with a slight strech on my old 240 and ran it that way for years with no odd wear issues.

    • @36coner
      @36coner 10 лет назад +1

      there is no inherent proof that stretching tires decreases tire life, BUT you do face the possibility of tread separation/tire error if you drive on them under the correct air pressure. thats also to be said for unstretched tires too though. main +1 to stretching tires is fender clearance. the wear is going to be nominally faster from the decrease in tire circumference, meaning slightly greater RPM than accurate

    Is it still ok for my case ill be using 215/70r16 tires on an 16" 8j et9? I still want handling though not for fast cornering since i will put it on an suv. Also stock rims weight limit i guess is 690kg but the one i wanted to install is rated 620kg. Is it ok to do the swap?

    Just for who said they might not allow streched tires on the track... The sidewalls on streched tires have little or no flex , so they are preferred for drifting.

    • @StefanGShep
      @StefanGShep  10 лет назад

      ...as I mentioned in the description, I drive slightly stretched tires on the track (215/35s on 16x9s) as I prefer the more direct feel and cornering.

    •  10 лет назад

      Stefan Shepherd Ah-ha! so there is a real reason for this! What are the handling characteristics like? Advantages/disadvantages?
      Would it be ok for a GT auto or is this something strictly for the track?

    • @StefanGShep
      @StefanGShep  10 лет назад

      ***** you get a way more direct steering as the tire doesn't bend anymore, though it can give you less grip in corners.
      215/35s on 9J for example still corner very well, while 195/40s on 9J already handle pretty bad.
      That's on the track though. I just daily the 195s and it just rides the same as 215s.
      If I would be all about handling, I would rather run 225s on 9J wide rims. or for my Golf probably 215/35s on 8J.

    why would you want to do this? i know it looks cool and everything, but you have less tire on the road than what you could have. ive got 6 inch rims on my car, but i chose to put 7 inch wide tires on it. more rubber on the road, more traction. im more of a function over form kinda guy though

    • @briskxd1093
      @briskxd1093 8 лет назад +11

      The Japanese used to do this when they didn't have the right sized tires anymore for drifting so they would just get some cheap ones from the junkyard or something then stretch them, then Americans thought it looked good so they started using it for this "stance" sort of thing but whatever.

    • @dragonslayer1483
      @dragonslayer1483 8 лет назад +4

      Issiah Gordon thats a good reason, but this stance bs is dumb. yeah it looks cool, but why trade grip over a minimal aesthetic thing?

      +dragonslayer1483 yea well a lot of people by cars based on appearance .... like lowriders for example.... what possible advantages do you from having a lowrider? this is a style thing. i can see why some people may do this because the point is to have the rim flush with the car body while the wheels tuck in....

    • @dragonslayer1483
      @dragonslayer1483 8 лет назад +1

      milldabeast519 im just a function over form type of guy... but whatever, i can go around a corner faster with the same width rims. i run tires wider than my rim giving me more grip. if i were to lower my car enough to need skinny tires i would just roll the fenders a bit. ive only done a modest amount of lowering on my car so its not a problem

    • @JMKady76
      @JMKady76 9 лет назад +1

      +tpvalley Usually you use ether (starting fluid) for this. The solvent is burned/evaporated off very rapidly, it's not there long enough to hurt the tire. In the video they're using WAY too much (That's why he's having to blow air into the tire before it pops, to evaporate whatever liquid they're using).

    After that, don't complain that the the tyre loose preassure . Using flameable substances it will always damage the bead and it will loose preassure. Always use the proper tools for the job, such as the inflator :)

    • @StefanGShep
      @StefanGShep  10 лет назад

      The flame lasts only a couple of seconds and thus doesn't heat the rubber up much. If that would damage the bead, I would not run tyres of that brand at all.

  • @tubergenmotorsports4193
    @tubergenmotorsports4193 8 лет назад

    Used to be, we got wider rims so we could get wider tires, more traction, better wear, better braking, higher cornering speeds, better looks. To bad these guys can't afford the wider tires.
    I know,,,I know,,, its a style thing.
    I guess some are acually wedging the widest rim,tire combo in the fender, but they are making lower profile tires now so you can run the correct "safe" width.

    I dunno about all the harsh criticisms and "hating" on the Original Poster of this video. It Seems like a prejudice and envy. Here's my opinion. Stretched tires look kinda cool on alot of rides. The fact that they seem to loose the bead seal easily (as seen in the video) seems like a risk for high speed driving & racing. However I noticed alot of Drifters will run their tires slightly stretched. I read that on a Japanese drifting website for car setup advice. Supposedly slightly stretched tires are easier to drift with. If Drifters are using stretched tires without killing themselves, it must not be too dangerous. I'm not a tire engineer or anything but it seems like as long as the bead has a good seal at the rim lip and there's sufficient pressure in the tire, I guess it holds up just fine.

    It's way better to drive on a twisty road with stretched tyres, the tyre deformation is smaller than the standart tire fitment, the car is more responsive, and if the tire is 195/45 on 9J it is laying on the ground like 205 because of the stretch and the fenders are secure. I drive 195/45/14 on 14x9 steel rims and for now i have no problems, yes i'm driving the tires with 3bar air inside and it's more bumpy but i think that can't be a minus.Making a stretch normaly means that you are too low :D
