The beef fat is actually ox fat to be more precise. This is more traditional also in The Netherlands but because frying in saturated animal fat is not allowed anymore in commercial settings (probably since the 90s already) you won't find it anymore in The Netherlands. Great you were able to get a taste in Belgium because it is quite special and I still know Dutch people who fry in ox fat at home. The fat is solid at room temperature so you buy it in blocks in a box. I still remember as a kid how we had to wait for it to melt before we were able to put the basket in the frying pan. I was quite fascinated by that. Now about the origin of French fries, nobody really knows. But every Belgian will tell you their country invented it. It's quite funny really. 😜 I personally believe Spain is the more obvious place of origin. Potatoes arrived from the new world around 1500 and Spain was the first and about a century ahead of the rest of Europe with incorporating the potato in daily diet. So the Spanish had a pretty long head start and since they still today have their own ways around patatas frittas and patatas bravas (which I believe is also the reason why we shortened that name to patat in the west of The Netherlands) I think it's very plausible that neither France nor Belgium were the first. Perhaps they were the first to cut the potatoes in even, thinner strips or bars and then the world took it over from there who knows. But I'm sure Europeans have been frying potatoes for 5 centuries already and simply according to geography it just doesn't seem plausible that they only started frying potatoes as they reached northern France or southern low countries (present day Belgium). But it doesn't really matter as long as it tastes good. 😎
Are French fries French or Belgian? This question always makes me smile because it's after all purely... American. In French fried potatoes don't have a nationality anyway, they're simply "pommes frites" or just "frites". The Brits call them chips. I don't know what they're called in Australia and New Zeland though.
It's a french chef who brought the fries in N.Y. Sometimes on video I see in the States, the french flag on cheese, pastries when they're Belgian, just like songs sing in french but they are Belgian singers.
Wooooow!! That looks heavenly!! That machine gun sandwich looks hell of something to try!! The sauces look amazing!!!! The fries look unique and amazing!! Beef fat does give a great taste I feel. Most people just order french fries with mayonaise or some other sauces, and then a load of different meaty snacks like "boulet", "bitterbal" "curryworst" "stoofvlees", etc. That doesn't take away that it's very delicious and a filling meal!
Hello, I am from Belgium and we have learned the following story in school from our history teacher. The fries originates from Belgium, more precisely, the first written evidence of the fries was found in Belgium, in the region around the city of Liege. There they already fried the fish from the river Maas. When Columbus returned from America with the potatoes to Europe and these were then gradually cultivated everywhere, there was a cook in the area who tried to make everything possible from the potatoes and who write all recieps down in a book. This book is apparently the first written record of the fries. People in this region carved small fish out of the potatoes and fried them like the fish. This is apparently how the fries was born. So the fries was invented in today's Belgium, but at that time it still belonged to France, as Belgium did not exist then, Belgium only exists since the year 1830. But the reason why the fries is called French Fries in English seems to be different according to our teacher and that was because of the Americans. The American soldiers got to know the fries in Belgium, but because French was spoken there, they thought they were in France. What many people don't know (everyone associates it with American jazz music) but the saxophone was also invented by a Belgian, Adolf Sax, who was born in Dinant, a beautiful little town in the Belgian Ardennes.
Do you think that in South America, where the the potato comes from, long before it ever arrived in Belgium or Europe, that it was never cut up and fried in grease or animal fat. Fries originated in Peru or Bolivia.
@@milmascars that of course absolutely correct, probably it´s like you say. they say they where invented in Belgium because here you have the real first written proof and because the Belgians made the fries famous in Europe, specialised the preparation and made it part of there own culture.... It seems that Pizza was invented in China, but everybody say Pizza is italian because they cultivated it.

I just now see your videos where you're visiting my country. Deep frying in beef dripping is the traditional way of making fries in Belgium and this gives the best taste and extra crunchiness but because it's made from animal fat it's less healthy than plant based oils. For this reason coconut oil is also used a lot nowadays (it's the healthiest oil, and people really have become more aware of their health and being fit). More info about what's special about the Belgian fries here: ruclips.net/video/HW4dmXrrwIY/видео.html
