- Once again, Matt risks his health to determine the best Fast Food French Fries. The fries featured are from Five Guys, McDonalds, Arbys, Chick-Fil-A, Rally's/Checkers, Wendys, and Popeyes. No sauces: just the fries, ma'am.

They taste good hot AND when allowed to cool for a bit, they can be served with chili AND frosties, and they have seasalt.
The worst fries in the fast food business are quite objectively Burger King's because they aren't even that great fresh.

Grand aunt Betty used to make us home fries out of her cast iron skillet every saturday in the summer. That skillet was perfectly seasoned and no fries ever tasted that good. Of course, being a kid I never knew how good I had it. Nothing could ever top that perfect taste.
My Mama and her sister, also my great aunt Betty, made the BEST fried potatoes/homefries I've ever tasted in my life. I once drove 6 hours to Logan, WV for those homefries. Mama tried to teach me how she made them many times, but that was before I'd perfected the eyeball measurements of "this much."
The Checkers being mysteriously closed was the most Checkers thing ever.

The best "sauce" in the world is Cajun Tartar Sauce! You can get it in North Louisiana at Eddie's Restaurant, Brother's/Orlando's Restaurant, Brookshire's Supermarket or Kroger's Supermarket (all in Shreveport, LA!)

I don’t eat fries one at a time. Grab a handful and shove em’ in my fry hole. That’s why Chick-fil-A fries are perfect. Eating one waffle fry is nearly the same as eating a handful of other fries.

McD’s fries are only edible when well done, golden brown, and still hot.
Back in the 90's they used to be fantastic. McD's is still coasting from how great their fries used to be. They were so good people would fight over them. Now I won't even bother ordering them. They taste boiled.
That's that stupid "heart healthy" canola oil for you. It's the worst. They used to fry everything up in Crisco and it was insanely good. Those days are over.

Also, while Mcdonalds fries are always on their A-game in terms of taste, the texture is always a hit or miss- they can be perfectly crispy, but they can just as often be a soft puddle of salted potato.

I think Popeyes uses the box for the fries because it’s much easier to pick up your order when it’s boxes of chicken, biscuits, onion rings, etc.
I’ve even had the smaller sides in cups packed into a box.
The bag is organized like Tetris. No mismatched containers. Nothing spills.

BONUS: I worked for Arctic Circle Drive-in in the 70s. That means we made the fry sauce. Recipe: one part catsup, a half a part mustard, to about four parts Mayo. It should be a pale orange-ish pink. Add a dusting (very light) of paprika, chili powder and garlic powder You're welcome.

The Chick Fil A fries are such a missed opportunity. They could've done cajun fries and it would've been amazing because the waffle fries have more surface area than any other fry which means you could get more seasoning in each bite.

Today's the first time I can remember having Popeye's fries. I'm sure that isn't the first time, but I blocked out any other memory of having them. And I just happen to remember going to Popeye's today. Ask me tomorrow, and I might have a different answer.

I feel truly blessed to have grown up in the 80s when fries were still cooked in lard, not vegetable oil. They were glorious. Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside.

You know what's even better for cooking fries? goose grease. You can buy it in mysterious jars in the back and/or clearance section of Chinese supermarkets, but not like the normal Chinese supermarkets, you need to go to the ones that are above a seedy bar with an elevator that makes you feel like you might either die or end up in narnia.
I also mourn the abolished beef tallow at McDonald's. When I worked there, grabbing some hot fries and throwing them into a paper bag was the best snack ever. Thankfully, our owner knew and acknowledged that 14 year olds needed more calories than adults lol, he'd let us eat anything within reason!

I was rolling when they got to Five Guys and slapped down a greasy paper bag! And then pulled a cup out, and dumped a bunch of extra fries outta the bag. They are definitely the most natural and potatoey. Not so good if you have a peanut allergy. Stay away! Cooked in peanut oil, fresh peanuts in the shell while you wait.
Arby's curly fries are always awesome. I am surprised he didn't mention their coating. They have some sort of batter or spice on them that's like crack.
McDonald's are pretty good. The key with them is consistency. You rarely get God awful fries there. They are rarely super soggy or overcooked.
They used to put way too much salt on them, but they have backed that off. In fact, they might not put enough on them these days!
Chick-fil-A are meh. They have kind of a weird aftertaste. But the novel waffle shape is kinda cool and good for dipping. Wendy's is better than they used to be, but they still suck.
My wife worked at a Wendy's back in the late 90's. She said that the fries came in bags that didn't match the size of the fry cooker (she said you should use about 2/3 of the bag per cooker). But since it's easier to dump the whole bag into the cooker that's what the workers would do, which resulted in fries being underdone. The new ones are better but I agree they aren't the best.
I go to sonic and get tots I admit it Arby’s is too far away or I might go over there to get curly fries but it’s too far away I do have a local restaurant that makes this fabulous Parmesan fries and they have a drive up window so I consider them fast food all the other food is next tier

Jack's & Milo's have the best fries. Rally's was in my top 3...until they closed & deserted me. National French Fry Day & my birthday are both July 13th and I celebrate both... with fries. 🍟

I would say you should add Zaxbys to this competition. Their fries are great. Ordinary crinkle cut fries but that seasoning they put on them. Amazing.

It's hit or miss there, I've gotten near burnt fries, super greasy and perfect ones. So generally I've given up on them. At least at Micky D's it's consistent.

If you get it as a side to a burger it's more, they just fill the empty space in the bag with them.

Couldn’t tell you about Checkers/ Rally’s fries. Its been years since I ate them; if they have New England locations, I’ve no idea where they are.
I would say a blind taste test would be a good one to do on fries, all fries taste like crap when they are cold but 5 Guys warmed up taste the best the others get rubbery. Thanks for sharing!

When I was arriving teenager, there was a Jiffy Burger, a Burger King and a McDonald's right next to each other! We got our burgers at Burger King, our fries at McDonald's and milk shakes at Jiffy Burger! Three different drive thru lane waits but worth it!

Milkshakes are the best dipping sauce! I have issue with picking the fries that “taste like home made.” When I want home made I will make them at home. When I eat fast food I want fast food fries. I have never had Five Guys, though, but my favorite would be Arby’s, then McDonald’s. Thanks for the great video.
So far I’m 2/2 with you on the winners with this series although I’m a northerner so I haven’t tried all of the competitors
