It's great to see a farmer cutting his own silage with a trailed machine. Great, well looked after equipment even if you had some issues. Such a clean yard and equipment. I enjoy your channel very much. I'm from a dairy farm in in West Cork but living in Mississippi since 2010. Texas before that. Keep up the good work.
Hi Gerry, A brilliant mowing video really enjoyed it and for me personally the footage of the smaller mower your Dad was on, I'm really impressed with the job it's doing and will really suit my job here. I think it's 3223 model from a previous video. No matter how hard one tries you will always have issues about a farm but all can be repaired, at least you got all the work done and nobody was hurt. Great weeks work you got through, the corn looking so well as well and great to have it all secured for the winter. Let's hope and pray now that you get the rest of the hay. Best of luck, 🙏🚜👍.
Well I'm glad to hear that your gear does actually break down now and again! I was starting to wonder if you had a machine secret you weren't sharing 😂. It's typical isn't it, it's never just one thing it's three! Least it's all in and sheeted now 😊
Great to see you mention why you have chickweed , spraying is only a solution to your problem , to over come this you need to treat you slurry over the winter to tight up you free nitrogen in it, also reduce you nitrogen amount applied and add a carbon source with it like humic acid or molasses . Chickweed is there to mop up the free nitrogen in your soil ... and also has a huge nutrient feed valve ... a lot better then you ryegrass (get them tested if you don’t believe me ) also maybe think of adding more plants to your silage , like clovers ,Lucerne , chicory etc and even nettles ... plant diversity is key to animal health which can increase profit in your pocket .
You’ve really got the hang of flying the drone now Gerry. Tyres will blow and parts will wear out from time to time, that’s just the way it is, so long as nobody got hurt that’s the main thing. Great video as always 👍
we had casualties as well, main harvester kept blocking, bad pickup tines, broke pickup wheel and some sort of bar snapped inside the header, (pottinger mex 6), second tractor broke two fanbelts, tractor stuck, a tail door on a trailer went and bent and broke the hinges and the fields have bad marks. fun times in russia too
Keep trucking on🤣 Lots have disasters every time they go on a job because they don't maintain equipment! Not tempted to grow red clover with the grass? Makes cracking good silage for fattening cattle 👌
Grate video gerry silage will always test your patience. Hope hay goes well. In the future will the trailed harvester be come extinct. Keep the faith 👍🙏
Once upon a time i sheared the pto stump clean off while in the middle of the first cut mowing. There was no other tractor in the yard take over the job either. That's what you call a job going to sh1t 😂🙈
@@jerryodriscoll3691 it was an old tw-15. They had a pto that was removable and flipped around to switch between 1000 and 540 speed. The fact that they were removable made them a bit frail i believe. Yes, right at the clip

@@jerryodriscoll3691 i actually never found out. Nothing else seemed to be problematic. Replaced it and belted away fine. Residing theory is that I'd the tractor revved too high when i engaged it and/or had the bed down.. Then the sudden jolt sheared it clean off 🙈😅
@@pliston1 you must have revved the tractor too much when starting up the pto most likely 😂 was she a mower with conditioner as that's very hard on them to start up
Well Gerry, great video as usual, just wondering do u think it’s worth all the hassle to cut your own silage or would life be easier to get a contractor bang it in in a few hours and not have to worry about breakdowns, repairs , labour , maintenance , the time needed to do all the work and the investment in all the machinery
When silage goes to shit it does go to shit remember last year baler roller first then hour later wrapper computer went tyre in loader stacking next all in 4 hours you got there in end anyway
we dont bother spraying fields we just mow it and pick it up with the wagon, silage fields arent bad with it and in the paddocks we just mow it and dump it with the wagon
Hi Gerry, I’m new to your channel, came across it by accident and very happy I did. Love the way you explain things and some great video to, Can I ask where you are based ?, subscribed and liked and looking forward to viewing more of your videos. Thanks Stephen
Sorry ger but I end up skipping a lot of your vids (don’t get me wrong I love them ) buy I think that you put too much drone footage of the same job in , that’s just my opinion although
Most like the drone footage... 🤷♂️ skip through if you don’t like to watch.... was quite a bit in this video, just how it worked out. It’s part of the day.... and a view of what was going on.. I try to have a mix of both talking and drone work if I can. But I’ll try to keep it a better mix 😊👍
Killian Murphy too expensive? You’d be surprised what you’d buy a good 2nd hand self propelled machine in good working order for, compared the price of a new/fresh trailed machine. Not obliged to to hire work either for the farmer/farmers wanting to do just their own. No comparison in output either, most self propelled machines have horsepower to spare to tear through work, and it also frees up a tractor, not to mention the reduction in wear & tear on it. Not for everyone but there are a lot of self propelled machines nowadays doing just the work of the farmer.
Edward O Grady cheap self propelled harvesters are completely scrap. That’s why they’re so cheap. A decent one would at least 30k for even a small one. Your then having wear and tear on the harvester itself and servicing. You would pay for one easy without doing work for other lads
C.L Agri I’m as calm as you can imagine 😎, merely just comparing the cost of over priced trailed harvesters versus a good & well maintained self propelled harvester, even letting it be 20 plus years old.

I was only asking about those tyres on the trailor a month ago 🙈 ara no major harm done.
On our farm we cut it fairly short for the quality and we turn it into haylage

Why would they? Too expensive and too big for their acres when they aren’t contracting
