They were not trying to torture the swimmer, this is simply the hottest day of Canadian summer. LOL
The BCU is now training slightly differently and "better".
The person in the water (victim) should get into the water filled canoe by being scooped up by the saviour. Then transfer to the dry/rescue canoe. The waterlogged canoe is emptied then the "victim" gets back into their canoe. This has advantages over your rescue.
That 'BCU' method only works with an air bagged canoe. It is also only one of many methods shown by the BCU.
Freezing scared people typically try to pull themselves into your canoe and try to capsize that one as well
that's where the paddle comes in - give em a whack in the head. Voila - Free canoe.
Great when the overturned canoe weighs 30 pounds. 90 pound canoe not so much.
Not fun but doable!
Surprisingly the difference between the two is not that much using this technique. At no point are you lifting the full weight of the canoe. When you are pulling it out of the water, you slide it along your canoe which takes most of the weight. When you then flip the canoe back upright, most of the weight of the canoe is on your canoe as well.
