I researched the Aristoteles's Unities after hearing a line in "Adams Family Values." Your explanation is thought provoking. I now must research, " The Battle of Hernani," thank you!

This took me back, very happily, to my French degree. I came to appreciate the value and force of these unities, particularly chez Racine, for the unrelenting focus they brought about and their contribution to the tension and atmosphere of the plays. There was literally no escape - except in death - from fate, from time and place and there is a sense of characters running relentlessly, ineluctably to their destiny. On the other hand, I have always felt that this put the emphasis on the spoken text rather than on the acting/actions - anything truly "dramatic" takes place off stage. For this reason, I think Racine et al work well as radio dramas in our time.
