    I think the spectacle of a larger engagement is what first interested me in wargaming. Whether its an impressive table or large numbers of models, that's where the initial spark is.

      Totally agree with you John I started wargaming fir the same reasons although sometimes circumstances dictate to play smaller or skirmish games. Thank you for watching my friend!

    As history has proven… big battles are often won in the deployment phase… The element of surprise is not a rules mechanic commonly found…

    • @MedievalWargamer
      @MedievalWargamer  Месяц назад +1

      I totally agree with you my friend! Usually Medieval Battles where lost or won in the deployment phase. It was very difficult to plan and execute a new or revised strategy during the battle if it has not been decided prior to the start of the engagement.

    Beautiful table set up! I agree you need multiple players to help oversee so much action. That can add some realistic command friction if different players have different ideas about maneuvering.

      hahaha very true! Always big games like these are enjoyed more between friends like a weekend social event i totally agree with you. I have started this battle though just because the friends of channel would like to see how it develops.. i will try to reach to a conclusion and post it on the channel. Believe me It is very hard work a battle of this size on your own..;)

    Very impressive! Love seeing the mass of troops on the table. Big battles can be interesting and fun every now and then but playing, mostly, by myself can be a bit long. Medium and small battles are more apt to be played by myself because of time and interest, etc. Great video!

      Totally agree with you DJ big battle are to be fought with friends it is more fun! Regardless because many friends of the channel want to see this battle develop i will give it a shot and we will see how it goes... i am hopping when we start the push backs and retreats we will have mayhem and many units breaking expediting the battle..;)

    Massive!!! What a collection, Nick. This would be a blast to fight out. ANd yeah... we would have to really extend the table to get even more on. Might become too tight, and less interesting.

    Great set-up, really impressive, I've got a long way to go lol. Multi-player battles can be a great way to introduce "fog-of-war" with allies misunderstanding orders, having their own agendas etc. Excellent post as usual, all the best :)

    A fabulous looking game ... Of course fighting a battle of this size with normal rules is a big undertaking .. Possible maybe by enlarging the size of the unit for game play but keeping the major characteristics as if a smaller unit .. I have done this for Big Napoleonic battles in 6mm where a block of figures represents a Division of even a Corps . Rules have to be simplistic but visually the game does not suffer ...

    • @MedievalWargamer
      @MedievalWargamer  Месяц назад

      Thank you dear Ray glad you liked the set up! Sure there are some tricks one can do to expedite big battles especially if you are playing solo but in my opinion if you stick with the game for a little while when you start the push backs and retreats the maihem that will be created will speed up the game a lot. That is why i like rules with melee reaction it creates more fun and realistic games.

    As I saw a previous video in which you mention Impetus your preferred rules set, maybe you could do a knockout comparison for Big Battles similar to the Skirmish sets you did with Barons War the winner. These days main Big Battle sets I hear talked about are Hail Caeser, Impetus, Swordpoint/Militia Mundi but there is a bit of a buzz around Wargames Atlantic with there 10mm Samurai and 100 yrs Wars box sets and a new rule set to follow fairly soon I imagine as Samurai range starts being released in about 2 weeks.

      Well le me se e what i can do.. i think Swordpoint - Hail Caser will be the two i will think of the third...maybe as Andrew is mentioning Impetus could be a good third choice.

    • @MedievalWargamer
      @MedievalWargamer  Месяц назад +1

      That sounds very interesting Andrew! I am looking forward to the release of the HYW rules they might be good and another choice for battles. Let us see... Regarding Big Big Battle Rules comparison like i did with the 3 skirmish rules its a great idea i will shoot the video soon.

    I love big battles but prefer them in smaller scales like 6mm or 10mm. I really only use larger scales for 1:1 scale smirmish games anymore.
    As for rules, have you tried either "To the Strongest!" or "Strength and Honour? The latter is technically an ancients set but easily carries over to Medieval with only a few changes.

    • @MedievalWargamer
      @MedievalWargamer  Месяц назад +1

      Yes smaller scales can provide an amazing big battle effect. I found this quite recently after creating two HYW 10mm armies. To the strongest is another good option for big battle i agree. I am not aware of strength and Honor i will have a look now you mentioned them.

    • @robertwalton9053
      @robertwalton9053 Месяц назад

      @@MedievalWargamer this is the first in a series of seven short videos on how it plays. They use 2mm but it's scale agnostic. ruclips.net/video/ezuttulDJMY/видео.htmlsi=Mm68QIc416cyI52b
      I especially like the Command Board element, the combat mechnic and the accumulation of Setback and Disaster cards.

    Having spotting the Scots flags and Heraldry, I was confused vby the rest "Is that French" and so it was :)
    It looks amazing, but you do need. aspace to set up and leave out as you play. I don't, so am going for "big battles" with smaller scale figures, and reduced distances, or skirmish, or, just started, warband games with a few units, but each is smaller, what I have the space for
    As you DO have the space for this, go for it, it looks magnificent !
    The 15mm castle, as the outer gate, looks OK, I just imagine there is a taller wall and bigger gate bnehind it

    • @MedievalWargamer
      @MedievalWargamer  Месяц назад

      😂😂😂😂 yes not a historical battle..agreed there are many ways to house rule according to one’s needs and requirements. Thank you I think it’s all the banners and the different colours make the armies look very imposing..you have a good point about the castle it could works under your assumption.thank you for watching and commenting my friend!

    In my country, a festival was recently held to reenact the Battle of Grunwald on July 15, 1410 between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Teutonic Order. I would like to share links to videos from the broadcasts. The fest lasted two days and I have been coming there for the fifth year in a row. The weapons and armor of knights and infantrymen of the 14th-15th centuries are being reconstructed there. Interesting to hear your feedback))

    Nik I was about to say something about the lack of the rain in your video and then it started raining! When I saw the pictures on facebook I thought Stirling bridge for some reason. I've given some consideration to Field of Glory in 15mm but I am suffering from the dilemma of having a lack of interest in miniature gaming since I have no one to game with. Much easier to get a hex and counter wargame on the table and enjoy that over miniature gaming. That being said I still have a desire to paint miniatures in my head but its proving hard to get back to it. Maybe its the periods I am trying to paint that just are not doing it for me anymore. I think I may be more suited for doing vignettes and dioramas over miniature armies. What are your thoughts Nik? Lovely miniatures and terrain pieces Nik! Really like your terrain pieces. This is the period of the Hundred Years War that I prefer. I am more interested in the Poitier and Crecy period. I volunteer to command the Black Prince's contingent.

    • @MedievalWargamer
      @MedievalWargamer  Месяц назад +2

      😂😂😂😂 there is always rain in my battles..well it seems to me you are still not ready don’t rush it take you time maybe a few nice. Board game can do the trick and slowly lead you back to war gaming..in the man time start with the period you want to war game and then check the relevant minis. One step at a time. Oh yes by far my favourite HYW period I agree!

    • @nordicmaelstrom4714
      @nordicmaelstrom4714 Месяц назад

      @@MedievalWargamer I've come to expect the rain. If it was sunny in one of your battles I would question if it was really you putting that battle on! I am still fighting the battle in my own head over miniatures. I definitely see my self maybe just doing vignettes and dioramas over miniature armies. So much more I can do in that regard. I am not sure why I prefer the early-mid HYM maybe its just the individuals involved that draw me to that period than say the later part.
