If you think this is a Gundam ripoff, you haven't seen Metal Armor Dragonar. There are characters that are basically copies of Char and Sayla, only the Char clone was still loyal to the bad guys despite the fact they killed his dad, and one of the protagonists has a mech that is basically if someone drew a Gundam from only hearing a description of it. The series was an early attempt at a Gundam AU series as Sunrise expected ZZ to kill the franchise.
