aja342 thanks for your service brother. I was at 10th and we had the same deployments. Kosovo and Bosnia, then the war broke out and it was Afghanistan then Iraq and back to the ‘Stan. I wasn’t in Bosnia or Kosovo though. Was at drum in 2000-2003. 1-87IN. We were set to go to Kosovo I think but then 9/11 happened. Anyways, thanks again.
I love this knife. Bought it in Montana in high school. In the Marine Corps, I wore this on deployment overseas in the Middle East. Still use this camping deep woods in Idaho. Has never failed me over the last 30 years. Thank you for the review.
WOW, wish my Gerber Bowie still looked like that. Mine is missing the brass guard and the tip/front half is all jacked up from digging my Jeep out a few times. Bought mine in 97 in Hawaii.
Same here. Ive had my Prodigy for over a decade now and I love it. Absolutely hate the sheath but its gonna get a proper kydex sheath with a scout mount soon.
I still have my old Trailmaster in Carbon V. I bought it in the middle of the 1980's. The best blade in my collection. ...together with my old Puma Automesser. 420 and 440 steels are not bad - if the heat threatment is done proper. I have some blades made of the 420 and 440 steel - family, and they all do a verry good job. One of my next blades will be a Trailmaster in San Mai. I made good experiences with old Cold Steel XL Tantos in San Mai.
Cutlery corner use to have it in their late 80s catalog. I had 3 favorite knives from them that I couldn’t afford. Gerber Australian was one of them. The other 2 was the Al Mar Sere with back serrations and the Cold steel trail master. All 3 looked impressive.
From what I have read, what makes the 420 stainless steel in this knife work so well is that it is relatively soft. By that, I mean that it is not so brittle and not so likely to chip (i.e. it will bend or deform first). It might dull fairly fast, but you can put an edge back on it fairly easily too. And because the stock is so thick, you end up with a stainless blade that can take a level of abuse that most simply will not.
Came across your vid i just purchased this knife from a local pawnshop for 60$ bucks i thought it was cool when I seen it but I didn't know much about it now i do thanks
I have one like the one you tested. I’ve never used it in the feild. I keep it locked up and oiled up. This knife is a bulldozer, thanks, great review !
I have one of these Gerber knives. Never heard it called Australian. Got mine late 80's early 90's at the L.A. County gun show. Probably $80.00. Mine has all the same markings but the blade is also marked MAC TOOLS (R). It is still in new condition.
The Gerber Bowie was made to compete with the Trailmaster, but it was about $20 cheaper. I bought one when they first came out and I still have it. I bought a Trailmaster a few years later, but I prefer the Gerber just because the handle fits my hand better. Sheath sucks, though. It'll soak up water and your knife will rust up before you even notice it happening. Even leather is better. Krayton is, of course, best.
I have many large Cold Steel knives, but if I have to take anything into the woods to do some damage look at Condor knives. Affordable, chunky, high-carbon steel. You won't feel too bad if you gouge it.
Gerber should bring these back as they would sell quite well. And i dont think it would ruin the mystique of the original ones. They still make the MKII and the older ones of those still hold value.

@Benjamin Blümchen "Free will" you say.... Does he not have the free will to place that coin where he did? He didn't stick it in your face. Did you even notice it before I pointed it out? He didn't say anything about it. That coin was very subtle and he was free to do it. Unfortunately, politicians have made guns a political subject, not gun owners. If you subscribe/watch a channel/video that reviews guns that should be a good indicator on at least some of his political views. And, I was free to comment on not only noticing the coin but respecting him for displaying it.
@Benjamin Blümchen Yes you are. I simply disagree with the reason for you doing it. Nutnfancy did nothing wrong by placing that coin there. Free speech is free speech. More power to him.
I don't want him to lose a subscriber simply because he practiced his 1st amendment rights.
I'm done with this Ben. Do what you will. Peace.
Gerber if you ever see this.....start making this knife again!!!
I grew up with gerber. The baby food. Now I carry one and it folds.
Are U able to do a recon tanto review and test.. San Mai ?
"Australian Bowie" make think "... this is a knife!" ; )
"Old Western"? The Bowie knife originated in Arkansas and Louisiana.
So what's the steel?
Looks like the CS Trailmaster. Looks like half the price, but it's still about 5 times more than I'd ever pay for a Gerber. Do people like Gerber now?
Nice little toothpick.
What glock and shoulder holsted is that?
Still love my Buck Hoodlum :)
The blade profile on the gerber looks a lot like the profile on the ontario sp-5 survival bowie
How about that Model 15 Smith and Wesson!!
