Nice playing! I too have a lefty Suhr Classic Pro S in Fiesta Red; but I have 3 single coils and Maple Neck. I got it from Jerry's Lefty Guitars In Sarasota, FL. Great guy to do business with. I plan to get another with the bridge humbucker, maple neck as always for me!
Do you find the SSV humbucker to be much brighter than the single coils? Do the tones between the humbucker and the singles balance well, or would you prefer the humbucker to be slightly darker?
+paqman78 As a rule of thumb, a bridge pickup will always be brighter. Suhr wires their Strats so the bridge pickup has its own tone knob, so you can easily balance the tone of the three. Also, before this video, I tweaked the pickup height so the output difference wouldn't be so dramatic. The bridge humbucker will always be louder, but you have to be careful and not to lower it too much because you'll risk compromising the bridge/middle position.
+Aron Ortega Thanks Aron. The review you did is probably the best on youtube because you went through a ton of scenarios and kept them constant while scrolling through the pickup positions. Exactly what I was looking for. I already have Suhr ML classics in my Pacifica HSS and am debating about the SSV or SSV+ on the bridge (so unfortunately I won't have a dedicated tone knob for the humbucker). You ever try the SSV+?
Sounds awesome!! Great demo and playing. Can't quite tell the strings being played, but that Riff at 1:55 is amazing. Need to learn it! I Read in an earlier comment about being cautious not to lower the bridge humbucker too much or you compromise position two? Loose the quack? Is the middle lower then neck and bridge?
Hey, thanks for the comment! As for the riff, it's just F#m7 inversions going up the neck. Strings 2,3 and 5. And yes, pickup height is a balancing act, especially with the SSH configuration. The middle pickup is as high as the neck, although the treble side is higher on the neck pickup and the bass side is higher on the middle one.
I'm a lefty too and I was thinking about getting that exact same guitar. One thing I notice in your video is that there's still tuning problems depending on where you're playing on the neck (I assume you tuned it before you started playing). I was also looking at Vigier guitars since they have that zero fret which basically solves the tuning and intonation problems. Tough choice when you're spending $2k or more for a guitar.
+wrinkleneckbass I always check the tuning before recording. But I did do a few takes of this, so there's a chance something could have been a little off. Also, when trying to grab some of those voicings at that speed, sometimes you end up applying too much pressure and bringing a string or two out of tune. Having said that, other than using true temperament frets, a guitar will always have some tuning issues on higher registers. I have zero experience with Vigier guitars (and zero frets), though...
I just ordered a V70Neck and V70Middle to pair with a DSH+ in the bridge. Nice playing and a great sound you have with these pups....
