- In the early 1980s, the Australian rules landscape changed forever when South Melbourne announced plans to relocate to Sydney. It was the then-VFL's first steps towards a national competition but a move that nearly ripped apart one of the league's foundation clubs.
In the first episode of AFL Team Builders, inaugural coach Ricky Quade, player Dennis Carrol and administrator Dean Moore take you inside the ups and downs of South's trailblazing move to Sydney.

I lived in Sydney ages ago and could never understand why the NRL got horrible crowds (in comparison to the VFL/AFL and even VFA crowds back in the 70s, 80s and 90s). The Swans move made much more sense than most people realised either in NSW or in VIC. The Swans finals record since their move is nothing short of incredible and despite the nostalgia for South, it's great to see them come into their own in Sin City.
Fantastic episode, hard to fathom the differential in crowd numbers even back then.
Goes to show how much respect the VFL gave, and continues to give, any non Victorian based team
Had no idea South Melb was in such dire straits financially before the move to Sydney! What a shame for such a respected foundation club.
"We were insolvent" definitely an eye-opener!
Without that move, they would have become the first Fitzroy. I know it sucks to live interstate to your team, but that's better than what happened to the Royboys.
Do you think Oberon Pirak played a part in the move?
Great episode! Love it!
Good to se Alan Schwab being recognized for a change. Sydney would not be around if not for his backroom dealings behind Ross Oakley's back and it cost him the CEO position although they shared the role unofficially and cost Alan his life when he was murdered in Kings Cross
Fascinating stuff. Up the Swans!
Thanks legend, appreciate it!
