The great mountaineer Tenzing climbed the ultimate pinnacle Everest in 1953. People forget he failed in 1952 as he turned back exhausted 250 metres short of the pinnacle. But he had found the pathway to the top in his 1952 failure. In 1953 with Edmund Hillary he re-traced his steps and climbed to the top. This year this wonderful team and Longmire took us on an amazing climb. We didnt make the top. But what a journey. What a view. No one let us down.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be in total awe of the guy Chad Warner is likely to become as good as. His name is Bobby Skilton who ran around with fellow Brownlow medallist Peter Bedford. Alongside them was an “absolute magician” by the name of Max Papley, yes Tom‘s grandfather. The pure joy of watching these guys made up for South Melbourne being a low ladder team. The immense heartbreak of the ultimatum given that we move or fold up completely was hard to take. So were the lean years after 1982. Then along comes Paul Roos who famously told the team at three-quarter time when four goals behind North Melbourne, “Hey guys, we’ve got it pretty good, getting paid all this money to run around and kick a football, why don’t you go out there and have fun, and give it your best shot.” We won the game. He got us to a premiership and trained John Longmire who also guided us to a premiership. We are all gutted by this years GF. However we need to think about how we got to that pinnacle in the first place. Winning five games in 2020 to a Grand final spot this year. It goes without saying that our great club will be better for the experience and come back even better in 2023. Love our team. Go Swans. 🦢🦢🦢
