I truly respect the way you teach. I like it how you try to slide in the theory stuff in a way that it is easy to understand, instead of just going through the chords of Wonderwall or whatever. When people ask me for good channels or sites to learn basic theory and to get started with music I always tell them to check out Sean Daniel. This is why I now must ask you to keep up the good work, because my honour and trustworthiness lies in your hands.
The way you make the music theory practical ❤️... It's feels good to know why you've learned... And the way they are connected... I truly respect you for selecting such topics.
Interesting stuff. This is kind of what I discovered a few months back with hammer-ons but only in the standard form (not moving around). Truly, I didn't know why it sounded good, but knew that it did. Now I understand it's in a scale and I can move around a bit more. This is really a great tip!
playing guitar 30 years living room taught didnt get far really jam an electric out but not know what i was doing just played the mood i was in took a few lessons lately AMAZING wow what a little theory and guys like you online really learnin new stuff fast thanks much keep goin man
I agree with your well balanced thoughts on what people should be playing. I’m learning from scratch and I’m keeping my mind open to all growth potentials.
Humor, knowledge & experience always make a great teacher - and that you are! I use some of ur stuff for my guitar students/teaching ...mucho gracias...
Wow, this is really an epiphany. I was definitely guilty of thinking of "scales for solos" and "chords for rhythm". I'm really excited to try mixing some knowledge of scales in to make my chord playing more interesting. Thanks for the great channel Sean!
This video just made things click. That was so fun. I am so grateful you keep doing these videos instead of leaving us for a stand up comedy career. I would however watch those as well.
I keep learning always more than i expect every time i open a video from you. It´s almost unbelievable how much better i understand all you say and explain about guitar ways to play. I don't know any better lessons than yours. Thank you very, very much!!
Terrific video as usual! I have only been playing for 2 yrs. & am not very good at it yet. This will help with the chords that I do know how to play, so thanks for that. Keep up the great work............ Steve
Great stuff Sean! I laughed out loud when you said G was "The People's key". You should have arched your eye brow like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The People's Champion, haha. Awesome lesson.
I typically use those embellishments a lot, never really linked em to the em pentatonic, great lesson thanks makes seeing embellishments much easier. Great lesson Sean, Ian slackin now ;).
alright alright, Ian if you must top this lesson you will be required to use a Sean Daniels, technique ;). I suggest you bring in a pretty girl with a ridiculous amount of vocal talent, and have her sing to some badass guitar playing. That I know you can do ;) LOL Yes Ian you have some awesome teaching skills too, but I have to say I really never thought about embellishments that way, and I suspect I will look at pentatonics/ Diatonics the same way when I embellish. Have to give Sean this round ;) no worries your killing him on the live thing ;)
Hey Ian you can always do a one up on Sean and throw in a diationic version of the above video. LOL Man that really was an awesome eye opener lesson, I can't believe I never considered what an embellishment really is, that being adding additional notes from the scale your in, so simple yet overlooked, yet not no more. Thank you both for your videos, they are well appreciated by all whom are on the same path and journey as I know all of us are, that being the unobtainable ability to master the greatest instrument on Earth (in my opinion.) the six string guitar ;)
I love your lessons they are quite easy to follow...how do I get videos you have done on fingering???...and also how to know what scales are in what key..please
Neil Young's "Old man" utilizes the E minor pentatonic in this fashion . It's real cool song I enjoy plating it . Also Cinnamon girl is in drop d tuning that Sean uses in his riff deconstruction video, of a Filter song .
Thanks Sean. Another great video. This is such a great explanation of a sound I hear all the time in music. For years, I could never figure it out what they were doing. Such a simple techniquie, with a good description. Throw in a capo and you can do that anywhere right?
Hey loving your video tutorials, i feel like my guitar playing has come on a lot since starting to watch your videos! Have you ever made or would you make a video on substituting more 'jazzy' chords for 'normal' chords? I am just never sure when and how I can use these crazier chords so that it will sound good! Thanks
I recently learned that you can substitute the V7 for the diminished chord, so D7 could sub for F#dim. I noticed you threw in the D7 here. It might make a good lesson on why this works.
that was so eloquently stated about how "we" separate our selves from either learning lead "scales" or learning the melodies of songs that has been my problem i'm constantly in the class room i'm always sitting on the bench when it should be time for recess but the way u married "hooked up these two lost soul was brilliant they should be hooking up and making whoopie and speaking of whoopie i want to thank you and the gorgeous katie lowe for making me very happy by taking my request of joining together to sing black bird there's going to be a little something in yours and lady lowe's stocking for christmas and not just a lump of coal like what i'm used too i have a feeling christmas is coming early this year 💰😇 even if it doesn't have my name on it, u and your pep'[s can rest assured it came from me!!! me!!! me!!! and not taylor swift 😂
Excellent lesson, Sean. Thank you. Do you know of any songs that use the F# diminished chord? I love the sound of it but every song in G seems to use G, C and D.
Hey Sean.. great video once again. Will be glad if u can answer few of my queries: - Any particular reason for choosing relative minor pentatonic scale. Can't we achieve dat same stuff playing within the main key's major scale or probably mixing both.
This was cool, thank you .....in your example you used 'first shape' of the basic chords ....can i assume, using the 'Caged' system, i can slide up, do the 2nd / 3rd shape of that chord, and play around within any pentatonic in the same area? ( within the key of the chord im playing....
thanks mate,.. and have been. Really enjoying soloing around the pentatonic and dropping into relevant chords, really opens up heaps for a beginner like me....as a drummer, i have a new found respect for the guitar...loving it!
To play in other keys would you recommend learning the scales in the lower frets, or learning just the scale shapes and move them up the neck and play barre chords?
Personally I'm a fan of learning the scale shapes and moving them around but different people seem to gravitate towards different methods so whichever you feel more comfortable with!
I truly respect the way you teach. I like it how you try to slide in the theory stuff in a way that it is easy to understand, instead of just going through the chords of Wonderwall or whatever. One of your best lesson at least for me. thanks
Why is Sean such a great teacher? I just know that if I want to understand a guitar concept I want to know what He says about it.
I think I just learned more from you in under 8 minutes than I've learned about making music in the past year. Thank you very much!
So cool to hear! Thanks for checkin it out!
Sean Daniel I got a question : How come that we are in E pentatonic but you begin playing with a G chord instead of E chords ? Thanks
@@papoumkl7118 The E minor pentatonic scale is the G major pentatonic scale.
Well, thank you very much. You made me play better in one week which I couldn't achieve in 8 years. Thanks again! :)
+Daniel Brunner so cool to hear! Happy to help!
Testify!!

Neil Young's "Old man" utilizes the E minor pentatonic in this fashion . It's real cool song I enjoy plating it . Also Cinnamon girl is in drop d tuning that Sean uses in his riff deconstruction video, of a Filter song .
Neil Young is a master at this type of thing.
This is awesome! Can you make a video showing how to do this with different keys?
Great idea, I'll put it on the list!
You are a teacher indeed
Thanks Sean. Another great video. This is such a great explanation of a sound I hear all the time in music. For years, I could never figure it out what they were doing. Such a simple techniquie, with a good description. Throw in a capo and you can do that anywhere right?
Yup, that's the true value of a capo!

the facial expression is so essential, glad you pointed that out :)
You're my favorite teacher online. I understand so much more when you explain. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching and reaching out! I'll keep them coming!
Excellent lesson, Sean. Thank you. Do you know of any songs that use the F# diminished chord? I love the sound of it but every song in G seems to use G, C and D.
Hmmm, I believe just this one: ruclips.net/video/DksqKKKdvcM/видео.html
Thanks for that. Some really nice chords in that song. You're very talented.
At 3:29 did you say you can do the same thing with D or C
The facial expression bit cracked me up. Great eye opening lessons by the way, just discovered your channel and sub'd!
Thanks so much! Welcome to the party!
Freed me up 👍
Happy to help!
Very good!!!! József Vilmann from Hungary
Thanks for watching!
Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here" is a good song to study and play for this type of lesson
Absolutely!
You are pretty amazing, can you please teach us how to play some beautiful melodies using this four cords G , D , Em and C Major
Hey Sean.. great video once again. Will be glad if u can answer few of my queries:
- Any particular reason for choosing relative minor pentatonic scale. Can't we achieve dat same stuff playing within the main key's major scale or probably mixing both.
Yes! Definitely mix both scales together :) I just chose minor pentatonic because that seems to be the one guitar players gravitate to the most.
Sean Daniel thanks Sean for the prompt reply :)
your a funny guy man, really enjoyable
about fucking time! someone who explained what it is instead of boring people to death with b.s thanks for the help
Glad that I didn't bore you :)
It's all good stuff, but the best technique revealed here is definitely the use of the facial expression!
Great
Love it dude. My ear immediately went to the Floyd animals record
Yeah they're the masters of it.
This was cool, thank you .....in your example you used 'first shape' of the basic chords ....can i assume, using the 'Caged' system, i can slide up, do the 2nd / 3rd shape of that chord, and play around within any pentatonic in the same area? ( within the key of the chord im playing....
