As a freelance web designer/dev these were really good tips to hear. Especially the networking part, this is immensely value when it comes to freelancing.
@dcarbs2979 I’m Black. It is nice to see. You can leave if you hate when we’re excited to see each other in spaces we usually don’t. Absolutely not welcome here.
@@dcarbs2979 she was excited to see someone that looks like her because we don’t see it often. You seem bothered by that, and I do not welcome that behavior. So by all means, please go watch someone else if it bothers you to see other people excited to be represented. We are in America, where it matters to us a lot, because we aren’t afforded the same privileges or representation based on how we look. You can look up which books to read to educate yourself on that topic and gain a better understanding. I don’t care what white people do to each other. Hope that helps!
Ha, I did get something new right from the beginning of the video, in the 10 years I’ve been working freelance (and now panicking that clients are disappearing), it never once occurred to me that my clients or shop customers cared one bit about who I am as a person, I’m self-absorbed like that, so that was gold and I should try to do more of that, thank you for the valuable advise! Hate networking… hahahaha! Yes, that and marketing, I’m right there, that’s why I don’t succeed in life.
Excellent information. Especially for young people just starting out. Especially the topic about having a 'niche' [focus] and not trying to do everything! I have subscribed to your channel.
I really appreciate your videos! I took notes on this one! I’m a freelance graph designer and photographer from Fayetteville, NC, but I’m also a writer, designer and photographer for a news paper in the city. Finding the balance of client work and 9-5 design work is insanely tricky but I’ve learned a lot from your videos, can’t wait for more!
@@ShondaD_ Hi, it depends a bit on how much work experience you already have. Are you fresh out of university or have you already worked in the media or design industry? If not, I would definitely recommend working in an agency for 3-5 years to gain experience and soft skills and build up a network. When I started my own business, I actively introduced myself to many companies and agencies as a freelancer. This helped me a lot to actively acquire new clients.
@s.w.4409 Thank you so much! 😊 I am really a career changer pivoting into digital marketing, really. I desire to do freelancing, but I just wanted to know if it's worth doing.
@@ShondaD_ I can't tell you whether it's worth starting your own business in your individual case. There are too many variables that I don't know: your experience, your skill level, your previous network, your financial reserves. If you don't currently have the financial reserves to survive for 6-12 months, I would first recommend looking for a permanent job in the marketing sector. Here you can A: save money as security as soon as you are self-employed and B: gain experience and contacts. But if you already have experience and contacts in the industry and have a sufficient financial cushion - why not take the plunge?
I wish you could touch on how to know the scope of what a new freelance designer can actually do and not bite off more than they can chew. I find that is a big question for me. How many clients to take on, work-family balance. I am married so that is important to me. I can think of other topics but these are most important for me.
You don’t HAVE to! I worked full time as a designer before I went full time as freelance but always a good idea to work on this as it likely will be something you venture into at least part time!
Hey Qori, You're making really high quality content, I just loved the video, But it looks like it's getting hard for you to actually manage this channel along with your freelance , I was thinking if I could help you grow the reach of the channel, By doing the Editing, Thumbnail and Posting videos properly, By the help of my team.
Not required, “recommended,” but you can do it all while being self taught in design! Look into portfolio school. What’s most important is consistent application of everything you learn along the way.
Hi there great video, how about paying someone to find your ideal work, similar to an agent, does anyone do that nowadays, I am a graphic designer (clothing design) and animator by the way
Yeah, someone CAN do it. There are people that offer that service & similar. But I recommend building out who that clientele may be and doing that trial and error yourself until you have a better idea of who that is for you. I suggest outsourcing once you already have created a steady flow for yourself (for financial purposes!) If you do want help, maybe hire someone who can build a marketing plan one time instead of someone who is meant to get your clients on your behalf.
Sorry I’m so late. I hope you made a couple moves! My suggestion is to do a few passion projects for the work that you want to be hired for, then use that to market to small businesses so that you can then have real world experience in that lane. Most of the work I used when I was applying for certain work (even still if I don’t have many real clients in that niche) was passion projects showing potential. Alternatively, you can also rewrite case studies of your current work to match the work you want. Similar to tailoring your resume for a specific position with the work experience you already have. Hope that helps ❤️
@@HelloQori I think naturally, I’m seen as a “do it all” creator, so even if a niche is picked, I still know I’ll be called upon to do things outside of that, maybe even more than.
I know what you mean by an all around designer. Some jobs I did, I would have to wear multiple hats when designing. But the overall video, I think is helpful and maybe picking up a niche might help me freelancer and finding a career. Thank you for making this video. I will be taking notes.
Well, choosing a niche means you also learn how to say no to things that aren’t reflective of that. When I started, I did it all. Most creators can do a lot of different things. I made this point basically to say picking a niche helps you focus in one lane and scale, so if you’re interested in growing your freelance business, that’s one (strong) way to do it.
Networking & social media are going to be your friend!! Keep going. Especially with social media right now, I highly recommend Threads, RUclips, IG, & TikTok for leads. Don’t need to go viral to get them. Email me your portfolio if you’d like! And/or join my discord if you haven’t already. Lots of help there.

Does being a videographer/photographer using graphic design on my work count as one niche?
