DUDE, thanks sooooo much!!!!! Had a dead Onkyo NR818; No power. Mine too was the power relay. I looked at other videos that made me think it was a capacitor and checked them and they were all good so I had the unit idle for a few months. I popped the cover off the relay and manually closed the contacts and the receiver came right back to life. It took me just minutes. I will fix the relay rather than replace the board and I should be good to go. Its amazing, how many pieces of expensive equipment get tossed for such a simple problems. I was close to tossing it, but now for a few dollars, I will bring it back to life.
I will be making a repair video on this since mine also had a standby board issue and I have diagnosed, got it to work, and have parts on order. Total repair cost is $5.49 and I have enough parts to fix 4 more! If it wasn't for YOUR video, I would have left it in the trash can. Thank you so much for inclining me to give it another shot. I really do hate throwing repairable things away.
Thank you so much for making this video. I found one on the sidewalk a couple of days ago. It didn't show any sign of life. Your video is on top when googling, so I bypassed the relay and the receiver run. Fastest fix ever. Now I just need to find good relay, for now I need to unplug it to turn off.
Tried it on my Sony 1070, popped open the relay forced the contact and Shazam we are open for business!! Thanks for the tip! I’m amazed it was that easy. Didn’t replace anything just got creative to force the contact 👍🏼
Thanks for this post. We were all over the place looking for other faults based on common failures in most of this class of receivers. Thanks to this video I found on the TX-NR616 the relay is open coil.
I had the same issue. Was about to consign the amp to the bin and wait for Black Friday, but after seeing this I went to test the relay on the power board (SDT-S-109LMR2) which had stopped clicking. Using a multimeter in amps mode, shorted the output pins of the relay to bypass it carefully and the amp sprung to life. Passed 9v from PP3 through the input and it doesn't energise, confirming failure of the component. Couldn't get a replacement relay exactly the same (guess everyone ran out of stock because they fail so much!) but bought an SDT-S-112LMR which is the 12v version for about £2, soldered in place and my Onkyo is now doing what it should again, and no need to replace the whole board :)
Thanks so much for sharing this information. I have what appears to be the same issue with a TX NR-509 which has just 'died'. i will try replacing the relay - worth a try for £2.48 before looking at the January sales for a new receiver....
Thank you!!! I just put it in the trash can after not being able to find a power board. Ordered some relays from China, now I will go dig it out of the trash! LOL. Looks like a super easy repair.
I'm having the same problem out of my Home Stereo System. It's a Sony MHC-MG310AV Stereo. When i plug up, i can hear a CLICK noise from inside. So, I took the cover off and followed the sound. The noise was coming from the Relay. There is no display lights on or the light for the CD area. The only light that shows up is the little Red Light beside the power button, but when i push the button, i get nothing! Like i said earlier....The CLICKING noise is only when i plug it into the wall jack. I have tested the Standby, Main Standby, Main Logic Power, 12V, 5V & 9V. All are showing power except the 12V & 5V which i've been told is normal. I've been also told that the problem is the Main Relay, but like i said, it CLICKS? I'm at an end here? Please help! I have pictures of what i have done so far.
Nice vid. It would be evn more awesome if you explain how to check if the relay is in fault (for non electronic ppl) . My onkyo is clicking and doing weird noises as soon as i plug the power cord(but it's not powering on) . Could this be the relay also ?
Exactly help us non educated people exactly what and how it's checked and discovered... Please I bought a brand new Onkyo tx-nr 6050 and after 60 days it won't turn on. Can't go thru warranty cuz I bought it from a reseller not an authorized license dealer. Only Because I had more faith in Onkyo than only 60 days of use! But even they're using cheap China parts nowadays.
I bought this same receiver and it had the same issue. I removed the first power board (rear left) and removed the fuse and tested it, it was fine. I then put the power board back in and it turned on??? Weird but hey, result. Cheers
One thing to watch out for are relays that have a different pin out. I was sure a double pole single throw had the same pin out but the centre pin was in a different place. Nothing some jumper wires couldn't fix.
I have an Onkyo TX-NR609 that does not power on. I unplugged it for 20 minutes and when I plug it in again it just keeps clicking every 3 seconds or so. There are no lights coming on when it clicks. Any ideas on where I can start looking for a problem? I have already checked the fuses and the big transformer has primary and secondary voltage for a brief second between clicks.
why did you add so many different variables to the initial problem? checking the standby voltages and you original issue is much easier than introducing so many unknowns, try and insolate anything you put on that HDMI board, Static sensitive.
Static sensitivity in many cases is more myth than fact. Secondly I did check standby voltages off video and they were normal. The HDMI board controls a lot of functions of the receiver so it seemed like a logical item to troubleshoot. Pretty simple if you ask me.
Hello, So my Onkyo HT-R591 that I had for some years now all off a sudden doesn't turn on. I checked the fuse and it looks good I'm by no means tech savy and wondering if this could be the same problem I'm having. Thanks
Good video. I have the same model and the LCD front panel doesn't work or the light on the volume dial. It's a real pita working on these newer Onkyo receivers. Anyone else has this problem?
HELP split a drop of water on my onkyo tx sr353 it was on and it instantly shut off and it is totally dead no clicks or lights or any does anyone have any ideas.
Onkyo is a very bad brand. Bought 2 Onkyo after 6 months of use the first one failed to power on. And few months later the second one failed to power on

Good for you! Glad I could help! I know I don't need to replace the board, I just did because I had a dead Integra receiver laying around.

Was the STANDBY light on?
Just had this same issue on an Integra DTR-20.4. Thanks to this video it was a quick $1.34 fix. Really appreciate your content Joshua!
Where do you order the power relay?
Thank you!!! Bought a broken Integra from eBay and you saved me hours of troubleshooting.
Your work has saved me from having to do work and for that I thank you so very much.
Thanks for the video, excellent. any idea where to get a power switch?

Will this work with Model a - 22 ??
What was the first "mod" I missed that. it looked like you just took it to bits and put it back together (by 11mins into the video)

Hey Joshua, Do you remember what is the output for the standby transformer?
Witam,. Mam onkyo tx807nr, przy włączeniu go za 2 sekundy się wyłącza, możesz mi bracie pomoc jak to naprawić.
Thank you so much man. I had the same problem. I just did connect the relay pins, and the amp back to life. Thaaaaannnnkuuuuu
No prob. Thanks for watching!
how do you shorted the output pins exactly please ?
Does it mean your receiver is on all the time unless you unplug it?

how do you jumper the switch?

Did you fix this onkyo problem in some way?

Thanks Josh. Do you know where to find replacement power supply boards? I have the same problem.
I'd check eBay. Mine just came from another Onkyo receiver.
I did. No luck. I'm doing some troubleshooting this weekend as I suspect the $1 relay to be the issue

Hello, So my Onkyo HT-R591 that I had for some years now all off a sudden doesn't turn on. I checked the fuse and it looks good I'm by no means tech savy and wondering if this could be the same problem I'm having. Thanks
Yes, it definitely could be! The relays in these amps are rather cheap and crappy. I say try it, you have nothing to lose.
Joshua's Recordings thank you. Now the question would be where can I buy them?
Good video. I have the same model and the LCD front panel doesn't work or the light on the volume dial. It's a real pita working on these newer Onkyo receivers. Anyone else has this problem?

Check your internal fuse
Probably a short somewhere. If you're sure it's dry check the fuse

@@sc2dave1 it's either in the back or inside the chassis in the back
